  1. Funny you mention him. I was at the Mud Hen game on Sunday. As we were walking by the former strip joint that’s now a pizza place (or is that just a front?) on the RF corner, some guy that sorta looked like him was standing in the doorway and stared me down as I walked by. I just so happened to be wearing my old English C hat. You don’t think that he recognized me from this place, do you?

  2. Remember when people were saying that the Tigers shouldn't trade Lange because has so many years of control left? That argument never works for relievers.

  3. I hate the save stat. Rivera's career 1.0 WHIP, 2.21 ERA, and 2.76 FIP seem more impressive to me. Heck, beyond the career numbers, he was the same pitcher year after year. At a position that sees its fair share of ebbs and flows, he was both dominant and consistent. The guy truly shortened the game by an inning. Teams had 8 innings to outscore the Yankees. For damn near 20 seasons.

  4. I saw a great gambling story, Kevin Pollak telling it to Rich Eisen. He said that Walter Matthau was such a committed gambler that at his funeral on the back of the paper showing the order of service were Walter's picks for the games coming up that week.

  6. People have been begging for Bluesky to open up to the public for the last 6 months but they're still doing their stupid invite system for some reason.

  7. The Bears just lost their defensive coordinator. "Personal Reasons" The on line buzz is that former Bear Charles Tillman, now with the FBI informed the Bears that Williams' house had been raided

  9. Several years before I retired this exact conversation/debate had begun to take place in our production facility. The practice of mixing and matching by having numerous individuals certified (I do not use the word “qualified” here) to staff several different poisons along a production process. I was a part of supervising pharma production lines and never was a fan of this approach but realized the trend was in place. I was ‘old school’ as they would say. Like baseball, each responsibility could be unique compared to the other positions up and down the production lines. This conversation regarding baseball is so similar to what I experienced. I admire what Atlanta has done this year. However, I look at how the Rays do things and am impressed with how they operate. I guess it’s really all about how you draft and what you look for in trades and drafts, an overall philosophy.

  10. It also works! It's just hard to do and always has been. It should however be the ideal that teams try to achieve before falling back on mixing and matching.

  12. Parker Meadows definitely needs to be in CF now and in the future. His strides allow him to make plays on his feet that Greene has to lay himself out for.

  13. yeah - something wrong on that bunt. If it was a suicide Baddoo broke way too late, and if it was a safety squeeze he should have stayed put.

  14. Harper came back early as a DH. I could see Greene doing that, too.

  15. I get my updated COVID vax at the end of next week along with the flu vax. I'm currently dating someone who's at extra risk for complications from COVID, so I'm only too happy to make damn sure I don't get it. I've also gone back to masking up in stores and such, just for whatever (probably small) bit of extra protection. the single reason I'm looking forward to turning 50 later this year is getting a shingles vaccine. damn do I love vaccines.

  16. Appears the Russians no longer have the resources to keep defending the Karabakh Armenian separatists. Azerbajani's reportedly have destroyed a Russians base and the Russian have chosen to withdraw. Have also seen reports Russian is pulling artillery pieces out of Syria for deployment to Ukraine. And Russian state TV extolling the virtues of living like North Koreans to the population. And here we thought the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

  17. People just aren't good at math. They think all fractions above zero are the same. They also don't understand exponentials and the role that plays in viruses spreading. (Or time value of money, but that is a separate issue)

  18. For me, I might have an underlying condition (prediabeetus) that could make me vulnerable. Current strains are weak, but who knows if a stronger one comes? People are still getting hit with long covid and this reduces the chance. Plus the inconvenience factor. If this even reduces my chance of catching covid by 20%, that is 20% less likely that I will have my schedule disrupted one week.

  19. I did the shingles vaccines a couple years ago and didn't have any problems with either dose.

  20. My dad got shingles shot and covid booster around the same time a couple years ago and was a zombie at Thanksgiving. I may recommend spacing those two out if you can just based on that.

  21. I'm looking at it pretty much as having passed into the same category as the flu. It's always going to be around, it will keep morphing marginally as time goes by, I'm not particularly worried about getting it (have had mild cases at least once, possibly twice ) so at this point have both natural and vax based immune response. But if a 10 sec shot saves me even two days of sniffles and a cough, I'm not passing up that trade.

  23. And John Davidson as President, in his second stint with Columbus. Over his time with the Blues, Rangers and Jackets, what good has he ever accomplished. He should have just stuck with the broadcast booth, where he was great. I'm not comparing him to Matt Millen ... but maybe I am.
