  1. I can’t believe it. I tested positive for Covid this morning. I have been able to avoid it for 4 years… but here it is. Bummer. Killer headache, high fever (& I never run a fever.. unusual for me), head congestion. right now, not taking any medication, really, just something for the fever. But my doctor asked me to call them tomorrow morning, and if I feel worse than I feel today, she’ll prescribe something. I’d just prefer not having to take an antiviral, …I’d kinda like to see this through on my own. But, i’ll see how I feel tomorrow morning. I am just surprised… I felt like I’d just never get it. 😕

  2. I mostly just avoid talking politics and just listen most of the time anymore... touching on Chas' point, I can fake it decently when I hear something cringy, but it takes practice. And a level of grace that I don't think everyone can muster, especially in this day and age and also given that I'm not a member of a disadvantaged group. Overall, I've just come to the conclusion that while I have strong opinions (just as strong as they have always been even), I just don't have the time to dedicate to the outrage or getting into fights with people on this stuff. It's not worth the time or the energy. Happy to come here and let this be my outlet for that sort of stuff.

  4. There is a pretty universal consensus that the law around asylum is broken. These people are not legally immediately deportable - i.e. they are 'legal' as far it goes, because the current law allows them to make asylum claims that in all probability will ultimately be rejected, but the system is too overburdened to ever adjudicate. That works well enough for them because if they can stay in the US and make some money for any number of years then the crossing was a success. There is no single step that will do more to stop the attraction of crossing the border illegally than for economic immigrants to know they will not be allowed to stay while an asylum claim is processed. That is something that the current addresses.

  5. A buddy of mine lives just outside Knoxville, TN, has quite a gun collection, and enjoys shooting. He is contemplating buying some property just so he can shoot somewhere without having to associate with other people who assume he's like minded.

  7. Fantastic, then house Republicans should vote for this border bill.

  8. I think one of the biggest issues in immigration is politicians proclaiming falsely that the border is open. These politicians have voluntarily become the cartel marketing department and have obviously impacted the flow of migration toward the US.

  10. Not sure if this was brought up in another thread, don't remember... but you have to watch the We Are the World Doc on Netflix. It's very good. One of the best things I've watched in a long time.

  11. No Wings game until Saturday?! C'mon, what a momentum killer. 2 week gap between NFL games, March Madness a month away, no spring training for baseball quite yet. This would have been a great week to fill the void with a bunch of NHL games.

  17. This is a really good point. All the rhetoric about so-called "open borders" is basically just an invitation for more people to come than who might normally have.

  18. I think it's real but would be way less if the GOP stopped falsely advertising open borders for the cartels.

  19. For all the conservatives and the trumpublicans screaming about open borders and broken systems I suggest they put their money where their month is and raise taxes to hire more people to improve the process.

  20. Immigrants are typically healthier and have a longer lifespans than Americans. There is also no evidence that they commit crimes at a higher rate. However, there is a settling in period and logistically there may be too many of them coming here too fast. There is a big immigrant housing problem in some states.

  21. I’ve never been a Joni Mitchell fan apart from Blue, but that’s an incredible song. It was played at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and also appears in Love Actually, so a couple of other places young people were exposed to it. Why did I think Tracy Chapman died last year?

  24. I'm just some old fart sitting in Virginia. I have no clue. All I know is since 2009 anything a Democratic President proposes it will be opposed by the opposition. While Republicans yell and scream and all they accomplish is tax breaks for rich people. By the way anybody notice that a large number of new home construction workers are Hispanic?

  25. Trump had a Republican Congress for two years, 2017-2019, and didn't do a damn thing about the Mexican crossings other than halfway build a half assed wall. No legislation dealing with businesses that intentionally hire illegals or anything resembling funding for enforcement. They only made it harder for seasonal workers who in the past have been legally entitled to enter the country on work visas. Making it harder for seasonal businesses (see hotels and restaurants in tourist friendly workers to find help). They had their chance, they blew it and if they get another they'll blow it again. These will be the same people complaining that "nobody wants to work anymore"

  28. I blame reality TV. the vocal fry. https://www.science.org/content/article/vocal-fry-creeping-us-speech I saw a clip of a black female comedian saying "White girls talk like they are swallowing the words". She gave an example and it was so spot on. Another thing I noticed on a podcast is females will do this thing where they go really slow in the beginning of the sentence then it speeds up towards the end. Yeah I hate bagging on the girls but I couldn't listen to this podcast anymore because of it and it was on a subject i enjoyed. I just had a hard time following their conversastions as they both did it. I'd have to rewind it to re hear the second part because my brain was set on a certain pace.

  29. I didn't catch much of the show but viewing the clip of 80 year old Joni Mitchell doing Both Sides Now and me reflecting on how the meaning of the song changes as we age was something special. Cudos to Brandi Carlisle for befriending her and introducing Ms Mitchell to a new audience. In fact I think I prefer the older almost tenor Ms Mitchell to the younger soprano version. The Luke Combs/Tracy Chapman duet was also pretty special

  32. Yes. Ballplayers typically were good. my friend got tipped $400 from Frank Thomas. He was a valet at the Ritz. The Sox had a crew go to the Windsor Ballet. My friend was the only valet working at that time of night so he drove over to get them. Frank handed it to him and said “this is from the guys”. They pool their tips but my buddy was alone so if was all his.

  35. It started when AG and Campbell decided to dial up the blitzes, which left Sutton on an island with the top receivers in the league. It was what Campbell was referencing when he said "You have to give up something to get something," and it worked overall. Sutton was getting cooked on a weekly basis, but the team was getting to the QB more and giving up fewer points.
