  1. I traversed to Steinbrenner Field in 2007 for an ST game between the Tigers and Yankees. Sat a few rows up behind the Tigers dugout (thank you stubhub). It was pretty awesome to see the two names, Kaline and Leyland, on road gray jerseys leaning on the dugout rail side by side just below my seat.

  2. I still maintain that they were going to draft Witherspoon at #6 if the Seahawks hadn't taken him at #5. Beyond that, I think they would have taken Christian Gonzalez at #18 if the Patriots hadn't taken him at #17. Hell, they might have even taken Joey Porter Jr. at #34 if the Steelers didn't take him at #32. They finally put their foot down with the trade with Green Bay to jump New England and take Branch. I think there was recognition that we needed help in the secondary last draft, but the board just wasn't falling how they hoped. There really wasn't ever much behind Sutton and Moseley, and they knew Moseley was coming off an ACL and might not be ready by week one. I think they want the best players that will fit what they're trying to do. Carter was a good player who didn't fit what they were trying to do. I think it's encouraging though that when the guy they want (twice) gets taken out from under them, they don't panic. They could have reached at #6 and selected Gonzalez way too early, but instead they reacted, and got us Gibbs and LaPorta instead. They could have panicked at #18 and reached for Deonte Banks, but instead they took the best linebacker in the draft. Likewise with #34 and they got us the best tight end in the draft.

  3. with all due respect, the system doesn't care about that. What you really are saying is that you'd rather see Trump win than vote for Biden. That's the bottom line practical fact. It is what it is. Like I said, the process doesn't care a whit about what principle you believe you bring to the decision all it cares about are the vote totals. Voting is not a symbolic gesture, it's a practical action.

  4. If you want to talk about 'arrogance' at UM, this is the kind of place where it's probably most a factor. They feel anyone should want to come here so they shouldn't have to do a lot of spade work to prep the ground for a hire. All regular order: Put out the listing, hire the search firm and wait for an XS of top names to just roll in. And TBF, at the time there was conventional wisdom that Howard was very much in demand and that prying him away from the NBA was a bit of big deal.

  7. You know you’re trying to defend a bad argument when you find yourself talking up Cam Sutton. Let me add: Marcus Peters JC Jackson My work is done here, 84. Just take the L and move on. It’s a minor point anyway.

  8. Eliminating the income cap would allow the overall rate to be reduced. But that equals lower taxes paid for lower-to-middle-incomes (more progressive taxes) and higher taxes on the top 10% of wage earners. Verboten since 1980.

  10. The simple solution is to just raise the income threshold on social security but republicans have convinced a bunch of poor people that raising taxes slightly on wealthy people is bad.

  11. Only as a splinter group. Like this: Except: The only one ****ting his pants if Haley ran as an Independent would be Trump. Biden would not be affected. Except that he'd now win in a blowout, both vote-wise and EC-wise.

  12. One thought exercise I've gone over in my head a couple times the past few months is what would happen if he ended just keeling over sometime in the next 2-3 months. The GOP identity is so wrapped up around him at this point that, one would think, it was cause some sort of existential crisis.

  13. I think Manuel has made it pretty clear no moves will be made in season, at least unless something completely blows up ( murder, mayhem, etc). And Bacon is right. All firing Howard now does is satisfy some fans' sense of retribution, but that's not in any way productive. OTOH, in any normal time, I would be surprised to see Howard extended, but things are so crazy right now. Maybe the people on the inside - Ono/Manuel - see some kind of major re-alignment coming down the pike in the next year or so, in which case maybe you don't want to make a new hire until the dust settles. I'd actually find it hard to believe if there were not a lot of informal networking and quiet discussions going on between groups of University Presidents and ADs about what kind of future they want to drive toward. That's all pure speculation of course but just mention it as the kind of thing that may be driving top level decision making that we don't get much insight into.

  16. Just an observation after driving back roads from Williamsburg thru Fredericksburg and into Manassas Va. No Trump signs, 1 Haley sign (in Mechanicsville) and nada from Biden supporters. Lots of re-roofers, however

  18. For Biden to lose you have to posit that upwards 5-10 million Biden voters who were anti-Trump enough to come out in 2020 don't care enough to vote this time, despite Trump post 1/6/2021 having shown himself a much bigger threat than anyone imagined even on Nov 2, 2020, plus Dobbs in the meanwhile, plus 8 yrs of population roll-over toward Millennials/GenZ. Pretty hard to square all that with what the polls say.

  19. If the GOP refugees would wake up and realize that having now been pretty formally excommunicated it's really time to stop gnawing the cold bones of old dead plots to 'regain' their party and accede to joining the opposition. You'd think that, but it's still not happening.

  20. The non-crazy part of American Christianity is very conflicted about pushing back publicly against their political brethren even as they have more and more come to realize they need to be challenged. It's a fine line to walk without simply becoming their mirror image in apostasy. Puts me in mind of the kinds of things Gandalf and Galadriel said when refusing the ring. Once you cross line from humility to claiming moral authority in the name of a greater power you put yourselves in peril of losing the way back.

  21. It surprised me when I looked it up and finally found it. Apparently, the Wings have outscored their opponents 75-68 in the 2nd period. I woulda said no way! https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/DET/2024_situational.html

  22. The sad part is a lot of the MAGA’s I know rely on things like Medicare and Social Security. They complain about the high price of healthcare, but wait until they lose the bennies. Most of the ones who complain about the lack of so called Christian values rarely go to church. Those who do complain about leadership but do nothing to get involved in leadership. They won’t know what they’ve lost until it’s gone
