This is going to get lost in a lot of the chaos that the administration is inflicting on the nation right now, but Terry Moran told the truth and was punished for it.4 points

I only half agree. I think it does look pretty terrible when you have a sold out venue and the best seats in the house are sitting empty because some corp or high roller did show or is isn't interested enough in the game to watch. That's what lux boxes are for, the camera doesn't have to look at them. To me it's just another drip, drip of the social rot we live with. The rich waste stuff other people would love to use but we can't have that. Sure, its been the human condition since the Pharoahs but my baseball team doesn't have to rub my nose in it for 9 innings every night.3 points

All sorts of great science fiction will be returning soon. Season 3 of Apple TV+'s sci-fi series "Foundation" will premiere on Friday, July 11, 2025. The first two seasons are incredible. This third season was delayed by the writers strike as well as by foot dragging from studio execs who demanded drastic budget cuts which led showrunner David S. Goyer to resign. He’ll still be writing scripts, but he won’t be doing any directing or organizing all the minutiae so I don’t know how good it’s going to be. Basically, they got rid of the the genius that made it work. Season 3 of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025, with the first two episodes being released back-to-back. The show resonates with the best aspects of the original series and it honestly makes my heart sing. The cast is just phenomenal. The second season of Peacemaker will premiere on August 21, 2025, on Max. The season is set to feature John Cena reprising his role as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. I loved this quirky surprising show. Fallout Season 2, set to premiere in December 2025 on Amazon Prime Video, will continue the story from the first season, taking viewers to the Mojave Wasteland and the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas. It was a really gripping program and I hope more of the same continues.2 points

They are being good fans and placing bets. I mean the Tigers literally promote a prop bet midway thru the game on the scoreboard1 point

I’m so tired of seeing people complaint about that. Ryan Ermani had been a leader of that. Every stadium with those premium seats has this “problem”. I watch the players. Not the audience. It’s such a non issue. The seats are sold. People are getting what they paid for. It hurts no one if they aren’t sitting there. Get off social media Karen.1 point

The Tigers do have a couple of hundred million to work with, they don't have to let let everyone walk. My strategy would be to try to lure pre or early arb guys into extending just 2 or 3 years past FA with big AAVs. I don't mind giving guys big money for their age ~26-31 seasons. But odds are you are going to be better off letting someone else pay for whatever else they do in their career after that. Maybe you let a guy go who plays to 40 and makes the HOF, but you will have avoided 10 other roster crippling mistakes. A lot of guys won't be amenable, but some will believe they will still have a big payday score remaining.1 point

TBH I'm also wondering if would be best to use the day to bring away attention away from Drumpf's totalitarian display by not mentioning him. Perhaps we could have a bunch of events featuring a bunch of flags from as many different places as possible? Make it into something that's not about he who shall be nameless for the day.1 point

I agree. This is his (Trump’s) strength. He absolutely knows how to create a TV sensational viewing program. This is his venue.1 point

The Wings could use some outside leadership in the dressing room. Just like the Wings' seemed to get a bump from its winning culture in the glory years, maybe there is a bit of a loser or doomer mentality within the club when you haven't got out of the regular season in 9 years. Two straight March collapses in a row, or three if you count '23 when they got blown out by Ottawa a couple of times right before the trade deadline. No one knew how to stop the trainwreck.1 point

I've been listening to "We Have Ways of Making you Talk" which is doing an 85th anniversary take on Dunkirk. Talk about the hinge of history. So many variables. Apparently the decision for the Germans to back off the pocket around Dunkirk was driven by Hitler's vanity when confronted by Generals who had through their own initiative had crossings over the canal line which could be exploited to drive on the beach and perhaps capture the entire BEF and French allied forces, and confronted by more cautious generals did the one thing he would do in that circumstance: he exerted his prerogative to exert his prerogatives and issued the halt order. Meanwhile, Churchill was desperate to prevent Halifax from convincing the war cabinet to sue for peace and he was fortunate to have Chamberlain who had been burned by Hitler and Mussolini on his side. Without Dunkirk, its a totally different war. Without Britain holding up the Germans in Eastern Europe and Africa and the Battle of Britain, they have much more to throw at the Soviet Union in 1941 (and could have started earlier in the year).1 point

Yup. I don't know if Hoerner meant it or not. He was sort reaching down, maybe to straighten his jersey even but regardless of why, he ended up facing the ump in what looked a lot like arms akimbo posture, and that is absolutely 'challenging' body language if that is what the ump saw too. Maybe Hoerner meant it or maybe it was an unintentional outcome, but that's what struck me immediately.1 point

I’m just glad I got to see Gleyber 11 years ago when he was 17 playing for the Boise Hawks when they were a Cubs short season team in the Northwest League. He looked as good as a major leaguer in the infield. He was promoted to Boise for the last week of the season.1 point
-
Gleyber also doesn't seem to be an emotional rollercoaster type of guy.... he knows what to do, he understands that this game has it's peaks and valleys and, when he finds himself in a valley, doesn't let it get to him. As long as he's physically got the tools to hit, he's a guy you want on your team.1 point

I think the 2000 loss to the Bears at the Silverdome on a last second FG that knocked the Lions out of the playoffs should be up there. That ushered in the Matt Millen era. I would say that loss ranks second.1 point
-
I think Gleyber may have been exactly the right kind of veteran to add to a team like ours. He’s a very good hitter, a professional hitter, someone the other guys would look up to as a guy with experience, but he is also young and still hungry and only a little ahead of our guys. I think that last part especially might make him a better fit than Bregman or Alonso or, for Pete’s sakes, Soto, or, yikes, Santander—all of whom were regarded as being so far ahead of everyone else in both proficiency and salary that any one of them might have been on his own island here. Maybe Torres sets a better example, because where he’s at now is more attainable as the next level for our guys. This is simply a hypothesis, so I have no facts or quotes or links to back it up.1 point

Two plays that will haunt me until a championship is won are the Ortiz grand slam in the '13 ALCS and the Reynolds 4th down drop in the NFC Championship. Beautiful 1st half and there were no complaints with how the 3rd quarter was unfolding. Held the Niners to a FG after the kickoff to open the half, offense moved the ball smartly downfield in response, and if Josh Reynolds makes the catch he had been making all year the Lions would have snapped on 1st down from the SF 20 with 6 1/2 minutes to go. Worse case a FG would have restored the 17 pt lead and they'd have reduced a 30 minute half to around 18 or 19 minutes. Everything just snowballed and an hour later I'm waiting in a long transit lineup outside the Santa Clara stadium wondering what hit me.1 point
