Fantastic game for Mize and so nice to see a game without betting odds all over the screen.6 points

victory has a thousand fathers and failure is an orphan. this could all change when we know more, but it looks like the local response that we often see in these cases "Blame the feds!" may not be true. I think the issue with the government is this: government works. full stop. it is worth it to have bridges not collapsing, food not poisoned, and natural disasters' death toll limited. the DOGE issue is this: none of these morons have the required knowledge to know what is and what is not a good and efficient system. for example, I do not test raw chicken and meat at my home - I leave that the USDA inspectors. DOGE has no knowledge in this area at all.3 points

He’s a prospect. Most wash out and most won’t even reach their ceilings. However, when they do, it’s exciting, but I doubt anyone can reliably predict who it’s going to be. That’s why you collect as many as you can.3 points

I’m re-watching this part of the game where the Tigers had Zach on third base two outs and the crowd was standing in Cleveland because Parker Meadows was one strike away from ending the game… And then the Vulcans appeared over Progressive Field.2 points

Exactly. Most people would agree that waste and corruption should be cut wherever possible. However, the people making decisions do not know how to identify what is needed and not needed and they don't seem to care. They are just indiscriminately whacking areas - like health care, science and education - that MAGA doesn't like.2 points

I really connect to that quote and it’s interesting how a disconnect from the world can suffuse one’s experience with authenticity. But there can be different responses to it. Thomas Merton, for instance, went into deep contemplative solitude and when he came out of it 20 years later and was standing on a street corner in Louisville he experienced a deep radiance regarding both the perfections and imperfections of the world as indissolubly nourishing. The villainy and the kindness needed each other. He realized that he never really needed to escape from the world, but he had to escape from the world to know this. Anyway, thanks for sharing this quote.2 points

Well, Jason did his part today on the broadcast to get him a spot. Would have been great had he been chosen.1 point

I ran into this conversation shortly after the Minnesota shootings with a family member... Made a comment about how it might have been a left winger, and had to correct the comment. While they acknowledged they may have been wrong, when I commented about the fact that these guys lie through their teeth, lie as they breathe and that you cannot trust them (ie. GOP politicians, right wing radio), it ended up in some combination of "well, both sides are the same" and "nothing I can do, it's all in Jesus' hands" To be clear, I am a Catholic who, while not attending as much as I should, tries my best to adhere to the faith. If anything I have moved back toward the church over the past year. But I have a wife and two kids and want more than anything else to hand them over a better situation than the one I had when I was a kid. I feel like I do my best within the things that I can control, but I see that sort of nihilism and it enrages me. It's selfish, and when you read Matthew in particular, you begin to wonder what these guys think Jesus would think of their nihilism.1 point

Waste of protoplasm. It just keeps going back to how people can be so ignorant as to vote for these complete morons. But as was posted up thread, they are so culturally indoctrinated to see other side as some kind of satanic influence that they won't even engage on the merits of who they are voting for. And more broadly, acceptance of religious based fatalism will surely doom the prospects for progress in any culture. The term I always heard from the old-worlders I grew up around was "Inshallah" - God's will. Well try not believing in a God that doesn't think you should use every brain cell he gave you to make things better instead of accepting fate in ignorance.1 point

Skubal's combination of sinker/change gets them worried about swinging above everything which leave them wide open to swinging under the high 4 seamer. I don't know if it's because it's just harder to do or because back in the day it ran counter to conventional wisdom, but I don't remember a lot of guys throwing both 2 seam and 4 seam fastballs in the past like they do now.1 point

So here is one I've never seen before. Minor league game, bases loaded. Batter hits a ground ball to short which is a tailor made DP ball. Runner on 2nd fields the ball, giving himself up via interference but preventing the double play. Umps did make the runner who went home go back to 3rd. 🤣1 point

It‘s definitely possible that there are other important goods in life equivalent in value to personal freedom, including meaningful connection with others. There‘s a really nice book on solitude and creativity by the psychiatrist, Anthony Storr, titled Solitude: A Return to the Self.1 point

I still remember that season where we went something like 1-17 with Cleveland. I mean, they had no obligation to roll over and let us win or anything. The Tigers lost those games fair and square. It’s not like Cleveland cheated. But I hold a grudge and every time we beat them it’s sweet.1 point

Click to read through the entire thread... But man, it says a lot about how far the Times has fallen as an organization. At the very minimum, they need to bring back an actual public editor to really stress test the pieces going out the door. Otherwise I don't understand how they retain any credibility1 point

According to reports I've seen, the NWS did its job. Issued warnings and advisories. That's their job. The problem goes down to the state and local level. Kerr County has no warning system, no sirens or even the ability to issue automatic warnings on residents cell phones, for example. Combine that with the death in recent years of any local news coverage in those area. If you do want to broaden the blame a bit, yes cuts to NWS and FEMA as well as NOAA probably did make the problem worse. But these areas have probably been without proper services for several years. You should place most of the blame on those in charge of local infrastructure. Oh Trump's nonchalant answer was horrible. Right up there with pro life's "Thoughts and Prayers" after mass shootings.1 point
