  1. I would rather suffer the two-second separation between the video and the audio on radio overlay than have to listen to two innings of chatting up some basketball player in the booth.

  7. I'm finding the EV is close to perfect as an around the town vehicle, but when we replace the other car it will likely be with a hybrid SUV that gives me a 48" wide floor that can carry larger cargo

  8. The Willie picture got me started, remembering how he held his bat: I would have sworn he held it even higher when he was younger. I learned he played 2 full seasons in the PCL AFTER 18 years in MLB. I never knew that. This is a great article on Willie, anyone young enough not to know what he did during the Detroit riot of 1967 should read it to understand why he's so beloved in this town. https://baseballhall.org/discover/horton-a-hero-on-and-off-the-field

  9. Right. But if there were a greater demand for what she was selling, she probably would have had no troubles raising the money necessary to be competitive to Platner in the primary. But the polls of Mainers continually painted a different story... This is sort of the problem to me... I understand the skepticism of Platner given what we know about the guy. But the qualitative and quantitative evidence suggests that she was never going to be a competitive candidate to Platner, even with his flaws. It was a miss on recruitment by the establishment here, it is what it is.

  15. I read last week somewhere that for next year if you wanted to watch ALL of the NFL games you would need 10 streaming services to do so. That's nuts. That's the NFL, not MLB, I understand. I gave up a long time ago and spent 25 bucks on a Firestick and hacked it. I don't get them all, but most of them. Not without issues, but I'm not paying squat. Screw them all.

  16. On the topic of broadcast markets, it still blows my mind that Windsor, Ontario is considered Blue Jays market. Windsor is significantly closer to Comerica Park than most suburbs of Detroit, let alone the rest of Michigan. Yet we are supposed to be Blue Jays fans due to the international border. But I'll tell you what really pisses me off, are all these games that are blacked out because they are on some streaming service. AppleTV for example. So generally we are expected to have subscriptions to half a dozen different streaming services (in addition to MLB.tv) to watch the Tigers?! Maybe that's the norm in certain households, but definitely not mine. I just don't watch that much TV to justify subscriptions to Netflix, AppleTV, Peacock, etc. Yet there are baseball games scattered on these services which causes a blackout on mlb.tv?! That pisses me off! End of rant.

  17. Congrats to Bill Guerin for having the sack to make a big move and trade for Quinn Hughes even without a contract commitment. He knew it wouldn’t be a waste even if he couldn’t sign him long term. Even if it’s only 2 years, it’s been a massive success winning their first playoff series in a decade.

  25. I was listening to this game driving up to the mountains in Central Idaho for the day and just when the Tigers had a 3–2 lead in the eighth I thought OMG they’ll bring Kenley out! Then I drove into a kind of ravine where there was no cell phone signal, and when the signal finally came back, it was the last pitch for Finnegan. So I missed two runs being scored in the top of the ninth and all of Finnegan but for the last pitch, and the joy of no Kenley, but dammit it was sweet.

  32. The MLB app on my phone keeps excitedly broadcasting news about another dramatic “Home Run robbery!” My natural suspicions aroused I decided to “ask the Internet” and this is what I found. 1. Declining Fence Heights and Distances. Modern ballparks have trended toward shorter and more uniform fence heights, making robberies physically possible for more outfielders. Direct Impacts: Specific renovations have directly led to more robberies. For example, lowering the center field fence at Rogers Centre (10 to 8 feet) and Comerica Park (8.5 to 7 feet) immediately resulted in several successful "thefts" that would have been impossible with the old dimensions. Average Heights: The average wall height in center field is now 8.4 feet, making it the primary zone for robberies. In contrast, stadiums with higher walls, like Wrigley Field (up to 16 feet), are often "dead zones" where robberies almost never occur. 2. Increase in Fly Balls and "Wall Action" The "launch angle revolution" has resulted in more balls being hit in the air with enough distance to clear the fence, increasing the opportunity for a catch at the wall. Frequency: In the decade from 2005-2014, robberies occurred roughly once every 60 games; by 2019, that frequency increased to once every 29 games. 3. Advanced Defensive Positioning Teams now use Statcast data and analytics to position outfielders more effectively. Deeper Positioning: Outfielders are often positioned deeper than in previous eras (sometimes 5-9 feet deeper on average), which actually shortens the distance they must run to reach the wall in time for a jump. Training and Technology: Players receive detailed reports on their jump times, routes, and catch probabilities, allowing them to refine the "science and art" of tracking both the ball and the wall simultaneously.

  34. I so loved Willie Horton that I named my tiger striped cat - who was allowed to be an outdoor cat because we were like that back then - and when I came home from school one day in probably 1965 I received the sad news that Willie had been hit by a car and had died because he was playing in the fall leaves on Jackson Street in Auburn Indiana. I was heartbroken.
