Maybe they should try Carpenter at 1B?

Torkelson has for the most part done pretty well catching Baez. The groundball was inexcusable. Field it, throw to 2B, easy play. Even if they don't get the double play, a converted out at 2B gives them 2 outs with a runner (Candelario) at 1B. Maybe they give up only 1 (or 0) rather than 3 that inning.

I appears that they have enough returning internal pieces to add to next season. They also should have a pretty good payroll situation to take on salary for a few seasons. Cabrera retires, Rodriguez opts out, Baez opts in. They have one salary at $25M and nobody else approaching double digit $Ms. I think where it could get tricky is if the need prospect capital to make trades. But I think they can look to teams trying to shed salary as a priority to get value back in return without giving up too much.

Just a little perspective. The guy lived our dream. He played for the Tigers. We're just sitting here banging away on keyboards chatting about him.

Harris mentioned having 3 CFs in the OF and the spaciousness of the home yard. So it kind of difficult to see Malloy out there given that commentary. And Malloy hasn't had a game at 3B since June 13. We can see his 3B fielding numbers and they ain't pretty and they ain't improving. The bat is fun, but where does he play?

I've noticed more proficiency from myself lately. This just might explain it.

Yes. I think a bottom third of Baez, Meadows, and catcher would be fine. They've got Greene, Torkelson, and Carpenter dialed in pretty well for next season. If they find a couple of everyday players in the top half of the lineup, I think the offense can take a good step forward.

I don't know that Vierling should be counted just yet. And I would count on Baez because of his glove. His throwing seems to have gotten under control lately (save for one that Torkelson should have still had last night).

Kind of crushing to a spot starter who was giving a pretty damn good effort. Folks will look at the box score and not get the full picture of how they gave up the 7 runs. I think that 9th inning had some fluke to it (the Madrigal double) and/or Brieske might be made a scapegoat. But Torkelson gave away outs which lead to runs. Really disappointing.

Good question, not sure. But its an area that was forecast to have multiple inches of rain that isn't used to it at all. It was borderline hurricane, right? And we know how predictable paths and intensities of those things can be.

That's if they all stay healthy and pan out. The baseball prospect game isn't always successful. 2B is a reasonable position to target. What does San Diego want for Ha-Seong Kim (arbitration through 2026)? Are they looking to shed salary? Could SP Joe Musgrove be available as well? Would chancing SP Yu Darvish into an age 41 season at $16M be completely ridiculous?

Its not the field conditions. Its the infrastructure and resources involved in holding a game event there. I don't know. Its a preseason game, so there are some details to take care of, but I wouldn't think it'd be as much as a regular season game. They could have shuffled this off to New Orleans.

That’s fair. But I think decisions on Kreidler and Lipcius are due before Perez. Or maybe they’ve already been made and they’re simply nothing more than injury depth at this point. Kreidler can’t stay healthy and Lipcius’ bat was nothing special this season.

So let me see if I get this straight. MLB has its Southern California teams (both Los Angeles teams and San Diego) move Sunday’s games up to Saturday due to Hilary slamming into the region. The NFL decides to keep its preseason Chargers game on Sunday night in Los Angeles as scheduled. Am I getting the right?

Yes, that’s probably the offsetting move this time around. I don’t know, should we expect Malloy to be promoted this season? He’s not on the 40, and his defense is lacking. Do they decide instead to pull up Lipcius or Kreidler, guys already on the 40 and a much more direct replacement for Ibanez?

They’re going to have to acquire one. It’s difficult to assume all 3 of Carpenter, Malloy, and Keith are going to make it. Maybe Bigbie should be tossed into that group as well. Plus these are all young hitters. Is it wise to have Baez as the grizzled veteran bat in an otherwise peach fuzzy lineup? The only free agent hitter that intrigues me is 3B Travis Chapman. But the combination of he being one of the best free agents in a poor crop and the possibility of Keith being the 3B of the future make a run at him unlikely. Although Harris could decide to go after him and use in house players as trade bait for other players (established or prospects). All that aside, it’s just nice to have a few prospects look forward to. Thankfully Avila was wise to draft Greene and not overthink on Torkelson. Give Avila his due there, although I question bringing them up last season. And then out of nowhere comes Carpenter. This trio factoring in among the top five or six in the lineup once other sticks are added will be fun to watch.

Separated at birth?

I'd dump Ibanez. Go with platoonishy things at 3B & 2B, although I would have Vierling playing everyday at 3B or OF. Baddoo has gotten his bat in order lately. Oh, wait, Maton has cooled down after looking corrected. Maybe he goes down to Toledo for now. But if they decide to call someone up that needs a spot on the 40, I would think Ibanez is the victim there. It'll be interesting to see where Meadows plays. Baez, Meadows, catcher as the bottom 3 in the order? If Baez can revert back to some semblance of himself, if the catching duo can provide some thump, Meadows in between has no pressure at the outset. Just field the ball, get your experience at the dish. Greene and Carpenter have earned a spot in the everyday lineup. Maybe one or the other gets a day off vs tough LHPs, and that's fine. They aren't likely to play 162 games anyway.
