This is good stuff, no question. I worked at a grocery store when I was younger and I think a lot of us can recall that The Game was the Saturday before Thanksgiving. I remember that the Saturday morning of game day, the place was busy selling snacks, beverages, tailgatey stuff. Then 3-4 hours of silence during the game. Then, the place got busy again, this time with the attention turned towards turkey related provisions.

Sure, its antiquated. Unfortunately its on the books. Maybe the UoM compliance department should attack its job with an enthusiasm that keeps the program within the letter of the current law.

I guess the difference is that there is a rule against the specific type of advance game scouting in person which Michigan violated, and they got caught doing so, and now they have a punishment to serve. The fact that two coaches have been fired and Harbaugh accepted a suspension vs Ohio State is pretty much an admission of such violation (or perhaps others as well), don't you think?

And can we stop with the stupid rule tripe? Yes, maybe it is a stupid rule. But its what everybody has to abide by until new legislation is in place. This is a stupid rule: When the offensive team fumbles the football out of the end zone, the result is a turnover, 1st and 10 at the 20. That's way too punitive. I bet most coaches and fans agree. But you never see the fumbling team's coach send his offense out to the 20 to try to snap the ball before anyone realizes what is going on.

Its not as good of a phrase as your "quadrant of woe", but I think the NBA sees the Pistons as the "scheduled game of rest".

I saw that yesterday. Its pretty sad that a journalist is more contrite for the acts of the program than the program itself.

Did the NCAA know the full extent of what was going on two years ago? I'll admit, I don't even know you referencing from happened two years ago. How are other teams stealing signs? Are they advance scouting like Michigan was (which is apparently against the rules)? Obviously there's something untoward happening here that Michigan doesn't want to let loose. If they were dotting the i's and crossing the t's like they were chest thumping about not all that long ago, they wouldn't accept this punishment, there wouldn't be assistant coaches fired.

So, suspend him next season after he takes an NFL job. Ok. Are we sure other teams are doing the same thing? There may be some, but is it to the point of what Michigan did? And I’ll agree with anyone on this: if other teams knew, why didn’t they change their signs like TCU last season?

Yes, the situations are as comparable as apples to goal posts. No argument there. He either knew and he’s lying or he should have known and is foolish. It’s an act of commission or an act of omission. Either way, as the leader of the program, he has to answer to it.

Even if he didn’t know, it’s his job to know. He’s in charge of the program. At least, that’s what you thought of Pat Fitzgerald (which, sure, completely different situation).

So, if I'm keeping score correctly, 1 assistant coach was fired and 1 head coach has been suspended (including the biggest game on the schedule) and willingly punted his appeal. But nothing wrong happened, there's nothing to see here?
