Just walked in now as the 1st ended, seeing that the Wings lead 1-0 after 1 despite being outshot 7-3. Sprong with his 13th.

It is funny how the NHL is just dribbling into the All Star Break. Two games Sunday, one game last night, two games Tuesday, three games Wednesday, and then the break.

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2024/01/nfc-championship-ratings-lions-49ers-nearly-57-million-viewers-fox/ With the underdog Lions on the brink of their first Super Bowl appearance, the NFC Championship was an especially massive draw. Sunday’s Lions-49ers NFC Championship averaged 56.69 million viewers on FOX, per Nielsen fast-nationals — up 7% from last year’s Bengals-Chiefs AFC Championship in the same window (53.13M) and the most-watched television program outside of the Super Bowl since the 2012 Giants-49ers NFC title game (57.64M). Keep in mind out-of-home viewing was not included in Nielsen viewership estimates until 2020 (or measured at all until 2016). Excluding the Super Bowl, only three NFL games have averaged more viewers dating back to the 1991-92 season, all of them NFC Championship games on FOX: the aforementioned 2012 matchup, Vikings-Saints in 2010 (57.93M) and Cowboys-49ers in 1995 (56.79M). San Francisco’s win — which peaked with 58.97 million viewers from 9:15-9:30 PM ET — increased 19% from last year’s 49ers-Eagles NFC title game, a blowout that aired in the early window (47.50M). The Lions’ near-miss averaged a 46.3 rating and 79 share in Detroit and a 30.5 and 78 in the Bay Area. Detroit’s previous playoff game (against the Buccaneers in the Divisional Round) averaged a 40.5/77 and their Wild Card matchup with the Rams had a 39.6/69.

Was it Gibbs' fumble that turned the Lions off the run? Or was it the fact that after that and the ensuing TD the Lions were no longer playing from ahead? 21 runs in the 1st half, 8 in the 2nd half. I still can't get over what a thing of beauty the first half was. Offensive line stout, backs (and receivers in Jameson Williams' case) breaking off long gains, running wide, backbreaking (to Niners fans) 3rd down conversions including a run on 3rd and 11 I believe? I wasn't counting chickens at halftime, but man, the Niners and the stadium felt defeated. The 4th and 2 fail seemed like it might be just a blip, it wasn't until the Aiyuk Fluke (as post-game Niners talk radio was dubbing it) that the crowd really came back. I was hearing comments like "I thought the Packers game was a fluke, but I guess this is who we are" and "The Lions have as many studs as we do, how do we come back from this" and "How were we so unprepared" and "Bigger hole than against the Packers, to a team that is better than the Packers". Third NFC title game in a row, no Super Bowl win since 1994, playing at home as the #1 seed, a gazillion All Pros in the Niners' lineback ...and the Lions came out and blew the doors off of them for a full 30 minutes. They were not happy campers, about one more 3rd quarter Lions score from turning nasty. I still think the 1st half was more remarkable and unexpected than the 2nd half.

Plus the one midway through the 3rd would have shortened the game by a couple minutes or more. Reynolds makes that catch like he should have and even if the drive had stalled after that the Lions would have given the ball back up 17 (because now it would have been easy field goal range) with only 3-5 minutes left in the 3rd. Exactly like at halftime but now with 2/3 of the 3rd quarter burned. And the one in the 4th, instead of giving the ball back at best tied with 7 minutes to go, a conversion on 4th and 3 would have set up a chance at a TD to go up 4 with under 5 minutes to go. Campbell!’S worst call was running on 3rd and goal with a minute to go, forcing the Lions to use a timeout and taking a Niners 3 and out out of the equation.

Wings locked it down after this. Empty netter makes it 5-2 Wings. Goals tonight from Larkin, Walman, Veleno, Copp and Larkin again.

Could be a high-scoring game. 2-0 Wings lead quickly evaporates. Now tied at 2.

Yes, I forget what the reason, but announced it a couple of days ago I believe. Larkin scores career goal #200 to give Wings 1-0 lead.

Philly lost their 5th straight, getting thumped by Boston 6-2 today. Too early to scoreboard watch. But if they drop out not only the Metro top 3 but also the wildcard spot, a team like NYI or NJD or Washington could take their place without knocking out the Wings. They're now 1 pt ahead of the Wings, with the Wings having 2 games in hand.
