So it looks like many of the journalists aren't going to pay the $8 a month for their blue check mark so for those that get their news from twitter like me we'll have to keep a close eye on any posts we see cause I'm sure there are just going to be even more troll/fake accounts that try to fool people.

Poor Slay, he just signed his extension too! BTW Patricia must be a helluva interviewer to land all the jobs he has gotten because his results and player feedback haven't exactly been stellar.

2023 Detroit Tigers Regular Season Discussion Thread
RandyMarsh replied to oblong's topic in Detroit Tigers
Yes this is what I always thought and why I originally thought notorious streaky hitters like Upton and Javy could've been more valuable for the Tigers in terms of w/l than their WAR indicated. I theorized that maybe during their hot stretches they could help carry the offense and during their cold stretches we would have other guys to step up to offset. Unfortunately their cold stretches were worse than I expected and it coincided with other guys suckling as well. -
This is why I want him. I definitely have my concerns about him but I feel he has the most upside to help us in the draft and where were at as a franchise and with the capital we have I think it's worth the gamble. Also I think he at the very least may come out motivated his first year just to prove people wrong.
-
My dream non trade draft would be Carter at 6, Bijan/Witherspoon at 18 with Campbell and Tillman in the 2nd round. If we don't go db in the 1st then Id probably swap Campbell for a CB if one is available that is worth drafting there.
-
Also a few days before the 22 draft Vegas suddenly made Travon Walker the favorite to go 1 and of course he did. I don't doubt for a second that they have more intel then fans or beat writers.
-
Wouldn't they give longer odds if they wanted to intice people to put money on them?
-
Karsh and Anderson said Vegas has Young and Anderson as the heavy favorites to go 1-2 respectively. Not sure if the Anderson prediction is intel they got that hes the Texans guy or if they know that a team may be trading up for him.

I have no problem taking a rb early, particularly one that is multi faceted and can catch balls out of the backfield. Yes they have a shorter shelf life but the elite ones tend to be good for atleast 5 years, 5 years of elite play is a good enough return for a top 10 pick in my eyes, particularly if you are a contending team at that point. Id rather have that then a guy that may be here for 10 years but ends up being just a run of the mill starter.

That's true and even though I did want Candy back if it indeed would've been one or the other I would take Vierling and Maton. -

Orioles this weekend should be a good test. Baltimore's rebuild is what I hoped ours would look like, they have a young big league roster that should contend for the WC along with still having one of the stronger systems in baseball. -

Candy currently posting a solid 109 ops+ for the Nats in 79 PAs. His inconsistentcy made it a tough choice for the Tigers but he is somebody I wish we wouldve kept just cause he wasn't that far removed from a great offensive season. -
The A's are looking like the 03,19 and 22 Tigers right now. They're on pace for 26 wins at the moment while getting blown out most of their losses. Speaking of them they announced that they are agreeing to buy a bunch of land in Vegas for a future stadium site so it appears a move is coming, who knows how soon though. Its funny that less than 10 years ago Vegas was basically off limits for any major team event now teams are moving there, franchises are being given there and major events are constantly being held there. My how things have changed.

Then you can't guarantee we would've been better off drafting Herbert/Tua over Okudah. Herbert may not have developed the same with the crappy coaching and supporting cast we had for his first year and/or we may have not gotten the same return for Stafford. Also we didn't miss the playoffs this year cause of our QB play it was because of our secondary and if Okudah never got hurt(like you are using with Lance) maybe our secondary wouldn't have been as bad and we make it in.
-
That lost a close one in the conference championship in 22 as well. Besides who knows how the seasons would've played out if they had another All Pro caliber player to their team like Slater, Sewell, Parsons and Chase have been. Perhaps they would've had the 1 seed and HFA both years. Either way I can guarantee they would've been a better team than they were.
-
How about SF and Lance? I think they were in a similar situation to us in 2021 and they took Lance, they may have a ring right now if they took Chase, Sewell, Slater, Parsons, Waddle etc. instead.
-
I don't see why he isn't, he's excelled for 2 years at a big time program, played in big time games against big time opponents. I think he is as ready to start from day 1 as any rookie QB in recent memory especially given the supporting cast and coaching on the Lions. BTW I'm not advocating to draft Stroud just cause I think he is ready to play right away cause even though I think he is ready to play right away that doesn't mean he is a sure thing like we have now. He could struggle, I just think he is the type of guy that doesn't need seasoning and isn't going to gain a ton by sitting for a year. I rather throw him into the fire and see what he has then have him ride the pine for a year cause if Goff excels again you run into the possibility of having a Jordan Love or Trey Lance situation where you don't want to get rid of the QB you have cause you are winning and successful meanwhile your "future qb" is just wasting his cheap years holding a clipboard.
-
If they do take Stroud I'd try to trade Goff immediately cause he is the one QB in the class that I feel could step in right away and be solid. No point in wasting a year having him be a backup on top of Goff being 1 year closer to FA when you try to trade him.
-
Brees also was great at moving around in the pocket to create throwing lanes and avoid sacks which is something I think Goff excels in as well. Despite always being one of the more pass happy teams Brees was almost always sacked less than 25 times a year which is a really low number, his pocket awareness was a major reason why.
-
I wouldn't right this second cause even though I personally am a Goff believer we still have a couple years left on his current deal so no need to take on the extra risk just in case things go south whether its his play or injury. In a year or two if/when they get serious about extension talks and the Hurts contract is what it took to extend him then yeah I'd do it, assuming of course that his play is still on its current level.
-
Goff's only 28 years old so if you believe enough in him to give him an extension then it's in your best interest to make it as long as possible. You don't want to make it short then in a few years have to hand out another extension after the market surely will have gone up even more. To add context to his age, Drew Brees turned 28 his first year with the Saints and think how much success him and the team had after that? Rodgers had less than 50 career starts when he was 28 years old.
-
Assuming Stafford played close to the same he did in 2021 and assuming the Rams don't trade for a different QB and Goff played the same way in 2021 as he did the previous year for the Rams then I think you can almost guarantee that at the very least SF would've made the SB and been heavy favorites against the Bengals.(assuming the butterfly effect of the trade didn't change their outcome either) In another butterfly effect scenario in the hypothetical Niners Stafford trade is if the Niners go through with that then that would mean that unless another team made them a similar Godfather type offer that Philly would've stayed at 3. If that were to happen maybe they take Lance and we never get the Hurts breakout?
-
The 49ers also gave up a bounty to move up to get him too. For an organization that doesn't make many mistakes that appears to be a huge one as of now.
-
Yep, and for argument sake lets say Goff takes a step back this coming year or shows that negotiations are going to be difficult or more expensive then you want to take on then you can just take a QB next year. If it takes trading multiple 1sts or extra mid round picks to make sure you get one of the top ones then so be it. As long as that QB isn't a project like Richardson he should be able to step in right away and have success considering the talent he has to work with. Again though I think this is all hypothetical cause I believe Goff is and will be the long term answer but if he isn't it's not like we're gonna be screwed cause we didn't take a QB this draft.
-
I personally really like Stroud but like with Bama qbs its just hard to predict how they will fair when they don't have receivers and olinemen who are miles ahead of the vast majority of their competition.
