It's really sad what has happened to this country the last ten years, but I suppose it's been that way a lot longer and I just didn't see it.

The thing that gets me is how in our case the noxious bull**** we choose to endure doesn't, materially, make us any better off.

Eight months in, on top of all the macro items G2 listed in his final sentence, from a policy standpoint the average American is materially poorer and worse off. Whether it be from the OBBB, extremely high tariff rates being imposed, inflation (some caused by the tariffs, some by other factors). We've had roving gangs of federal officials in multiple cities, despite the fact that the American public largely doesn't want it. Vital parts of the government, including now the CDC, are on fire... expertise is leaving, and if we have another pandemic anytime soon, we are boned. The list goes on and on.

It'd be one thing if the cultural nihilism came with economic policies that were more beneficial (and popular).... but these guys are all stick and literally no carrot. There's no real reward for any of it, just a more divided, more inequal society and a government that exists to serve Donald Trump's vengeance and not it's people.

The "mental health" cries fall on deaf ears after all the slashing done to mental health programs this year. If they truly believed that as a cause, they would actually prioritize it instead of callously slashing that funding. Unfortunately, Americans have the memory span of an amnesic goose and words speak louder than actions.

Evil people, the GOP right now.

I think most people could see this definitely brewing during the Bush Jr. years. A lot of us could see it starting during the Reagan years.

The irony is that today’s younger MAGAs, who call themselves Republicans and even “conservative” (as if), think of Reagan not as a icon of the party to be revered, but as an irrelevant relic of the past to be discarded, the way people during the Reagan years thought of FDR. To them, Reagan is not a hero—he’s the original RINO. Young MAGAs actually revere Nixon as Trump’s true predecessor.

The Republicans have always cut mental health and substance abuse treatment programs since I've been in the field.  It might not always make the headlines, but it always happens.  This year, more than others though.

They think all people have to do to get off drugs is pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get a goddamn job. These crackheads don’t need government money to get a little gumption. The new federal government guidance is going to be: it also wouldn’t hurt to give your life over to Jesus.

Yeah but Biden was 3 years older than Trump. Is having competent leadership really worth not having daily press conferences? We are so back!

Compared to today's "conservatives" Nixon was pretty moderate. At least on domestic issues. If I remember 16 year old me, it was Viet Nam where he was hawkish. Watergate did him in but that was nowhere near what Trump has done in the past 8 months to this country.

I don't know, it's been a downhill slide a while now. MAGAs make Birchers look like choirboys.

BTW Goldwater was right.

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”
