I think they will honestly try to win the division next year while sticking to their plan of focusing on cleaning the rot out of the system. The key might end up being big steps forward from young guys already in the system, versus getting top tier free agents or dealing from the top of the system for established major league regulars.

I agree. And it very well may be Rodriguez gives us a discount and extends his contract. He seems to like it here.

The Marlins gave him booze too.... but a lot of other stuff too.

hard to judge about this from fan distance. The fact that he is a reformed binge drinker from more than a decade ago doesn't mean he's a tea-totaller today. Alcohol abuse patterns take a lot of different forms with wide differences in addiction susceptibility. Not everyone who abuses at some point ends up a deep addict.

I remember reading about Dicky Noles' alcohol problems.  One time he got drunk and assaulted a police officer.  He went to substance abuse treatment where it was determined that he was not actually an alcoholic.  He just liked to drink.

Desperate for relief help late in the 1987 pennant race, the Tigers signed him for the last week of the season and he pitched two innings.

Also, who cares how much effort/money went into that gift? It's stupid he is even getting gifts and is not entitled. Good on the A's in this regard if this is a middle finger to this new custom.

I see it as just a fun gesture and lot of the gifts are joke gifts.  The cost is irrelevant.  He easily has enough money to buy an entire winery if he so chooses.

But didn't they at least give him something high-end?      And the Astros gave him a bottle of wine from Dusty Baker's vineyard, but that's at least persona.    The Marlins and Astros gave him other stuff too.

But the A's...........what a joke.

But you gotta admit, the Twins gifting a rocking chair of broken bats to Mariano Rivera was pretty clever.
