oblong Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Just think of where our country could be if these guys had a spine before elections mattered to them. They could have "normal" Republican presidencies. Quote

They could have "normal" Republican presidencies. Has there even been a normal Republican since Eisenhower? I know you like Bush Sr but I am not a big fan. I mean, if we squint past Iran Contra, BCCI, rigging the Iran hostage release, turning on his ally Noriega, and racially weaponizing the Willie Horton thing, we can see some hints of folksy avunclarity, I guess. Athough Iran Contra is going to seem downright historically quaint after Trump nuclear-arms Saudi Arabia in exchange for billions in his pocket. Quote

And IIRC, Eisenhower wasn't ever a member of the party until he ran. Dole-Kemp was decent ticket, but of course that's probably why they lost. Dole was a little too hard edged to win, but Kemp would probably be considered DSA in today's US politics, and the two the them were better character guys than Clinton. Of course if they had won, it would be different a GOP today. Edited July 22 by gehringer_2 Quote

Of course if they had won, it would be different a GOP today. When Ike came back to the country and had his "parade", he was in the car with Truman. Harry told him "Ike if you want the Presidency, its yours". Meaning 1948. But Ike wanted to make some money first after a military life. His nomination was not a sure thing. The Taft "America first" republicans fought hard. They were MAGA before MAGA was a thing. I'm not going to litigate Bush 41's record. That was 40 years ago when we had a Cold War. The world is different. Hindsight, blah blah blah. At that level when dealing with foreign policy it's a dirty game with often no good out comes. But he was the right guy at that time. And on a personal level, I admire his career in public service. He could have lived a life in comfort in the NE USA on Wall Street after being a hero in WWII. But he had Barbara lived in **** housing in BFE Texas and he built his business. He and Barbara came from an ethos that preached "To whom much is given much is expected" Given the state of our politics today that's a lifetime ago. Quote

Probably because he raised his taxes. But that was the thing, GHWB was a poor retail politician, both because he was dumb enough to utter a line like 'no new taxes', but also because if he had gone out and campaigned hard on having balanced the budget I think he could have diffused the tax critique. However, old patrician that he was, he felt it only proper to let other people praise him, but enough the GOP was already going the other way that wasn't going to happen! So when is the 'winning' supposed to start? Hopefully within the next 4-6 months as China was believed to have roughly 4 months worth of reserves and has dropped it's oil shipments almost in half. If those numbers are correct, China will need to enter fully back into the market in 4-6 months. Quote
