In addition to Burnes, Arizona signed ERod which is money down any drain. They signed Jordan Montgomery in late spring last year. He’s out all this year and well into 2026 after missing time last year. They signed Bumgarner and ended up eating the last year and a half of a five year deal. At the outset of that five year deal they weren’t getting close to what they were hoping for or paying for. Arizona can’t win in free agency when it comes to starting pitchers. Quote

Hate to say it, but this is further evidence that it makes little sense to give an 8+ year offer to Skubal. It's far more common for huge deals to pitchers to fail than to succeed. Not ruminating on it, going to enjoy his time with Detroit. But I realize odds are he doesn't stay beyond 2026 Quote

I guess JV's extension we signed also probably worked out in the end but unfortunately for us Houston was the one that benefited most from it. Quote

He squared up to him and that’s issuing a challenge. I wasn’t watching it live, just listening to it. But I saw the video after. Mumble that as you walk away but the minute you make a show of it then no matter the words you risk getting ejected. There’s no other way it will end once he turned toward him like that. He didn’t intend to leave quietly so the ump just got it out of the way. A player or manager will not win that battle. Quote

I don't know if Hoerner meant it or not. He was sort reaching down, maybe to straighten his jersey even but regardless of why, he ended up facing the ump in what looked a lot like arms akimbo posture, and that is absolutely 'challenging' body language if that is what the ump saw too. Maybe Hoerner meant it or maybe it was an unintentional outcome, but that's what struck me immediately. 1 Quote

The other thing about that is that Hoerner said, “You're having a really bad day.” Hoerner personalized the criticism. If he’d said, “You really missed that one bad”, he probably would have gotten away with that.
