I was watching that game live. I was rooting for the guy, mostly cause I wanted the Twins to lose.

Still his only hit. He is 1 for 13. Maybe he can get a clean one or two today against Baltimore.

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery next week, and his recovery could cause him to miss most or all of next season as well, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Friday.

This is the problem with these players getting huge contracts. I've read that some of these contracts aren't even able to be insured. That's a huge blow for any franchise. But teams won't learn, rinse and repeat.

In addition to Burnes, Arizona signed ERod which is money down any drain. They signed Jordan Montgomery in late spring last year. He’s out all this year and well into 2026 after missing time last year. They signed Bumgarner and ended up eating the last year and a half of a five year deal. At the outset of that five year deal they weren’t getting close to what they were hoping for or paying for.
Arizona can’t win in free agency when it comes to starting pitchers.

Some teams have learned, I bet. I’m thinking we’re probably one by now.

Can’t win if you don’t put in the work beforehand.

Hate to say it, but this is further evidence that it makes little sense to give an 8+ year offer to Skubal. It's far more common for huge deals to pitchers to fail than to succeed. Not ruminating on it, going to enjoy his time with Detroit. But I realize odds are he doesn't stay beyond 2026

I'm sure there has to be many more examples but off the top of my head the only big money FA pitching contract that I think you could say really worked out well for the team was Scherzer with Washington.

I guess JV's extension we signed also probably worked out in the end but unfortunately for us Houston was the one that benefited most from it.

yup- Verlander signed for 7 at age 30 and had 6 good years under that deal. But JV is the exception to almost every rule.

Eduardo Rodriguez, after having a 5.04 ERA last season and a WHIP of 1.5  has an ERA of 7.05 and WHIP of 1.701 this year.

He's making 20 million this year and still has two more guaranteed years at an average of 20 million per.  Tigers dodged a cannon ball with that one.

I am going to defend the ump in tossing Nick Hoerner in Sundays game.  Sure what he said wasn’t bad but he did kind of start to get in his face. He squared up to him and that’s issuing a challenge.  I wasn’t watching it live, just listening to it.  But I saw the video after.  Mumble that as you walk away but the minute you make a show of it then no matter the words you risk getting ejected. There’s no other way it will end once he turned toward him like that. He didn’t intend to leave quietly so the ump just got it out of the way. A player or manager will not win that battle.

Yup. I don't know if Hoerner meant it or not. He was sort reaching down, maybe to straighten his jersey even but regardless of why, he ended up facing the ump in what looked a lot like arms akimbo posture, and that is absolutely 'challenging' body language if that is what the ump saw too. Maybe Hoerner meant it or maybe it was an unintentional outcome, but that's what struck me immediately.

The other thing about that is that Hoerner said, “You're having a really bad day.” Hoerner personalized the criticism. If he’d said, “You really missed that one bad”, he probably would have gotten away with that. But once an hitter goes after an umpire’s competence or, even worse, his integrity, he’s asking for the rest of the game off.

I hope the ump said "It will improve with you gone" as he tossed him.  The least a bad ump can do is have a good come back.

Saw that. Might be the best catch I've ever seen. He might have caught Big Papi's slam in 2013

As long as when both feet come back down they come back down in play, right?

He's played 118 innings (~13 games) and has 4 Rdrs. Probably 5 after tonight.

Speaking of catches, till the day I die this catch will probably be the greatest catch I ever see live, before the advent of youtube I scoured the internet for years trying to find a clip of it to see if it was as good as I remembered it being watching live and it certainly was.
