chasfh Posted April 8, 2025 Posted April 8, 2025 Raise your hand if you could foresee that the strength of the 6-4 Tigers team, the rotation, would see three of the five starters with ERAs of 5 or higher, and that Skubal’s would be the worst of them. Quote

I'm raising my hand right now - not because of the pitching, rather I have to stretch my wrist. Quote

You can call it that if you want (I still do somethimes because it's so ingrained in my brain) but the official name is now Injured List which is similar to other sports. Quote

I just think its funny what people consider offensive. Is the bullpen still suppose to be reffered to as the "Arm Barn"? That one makes me chuckle. Quote

Anyway, if there is one group which deserves extra consideration, it is disabled people. Edited April 8, 2025 by Tiger337 1 1 Quote

You could decide to call disabled people 'bananas' and in a generation it would have the same connotation as 'disabled' and there would be complaints about calling hurt ball players 'bananas' because it was an insult to 'real' bananas people. To me it's an exercise in reality denial. Like the IEEE argument about master/slave control loops. Slavery is a word for a concept that reflects situations that exist in reality, you can't avoid the intellectual construct - it's there no matter what word you use. People have been cruel and inhuman to each other since forever, its real history - it doesn't go away if you call it something else. So that's my rant - but it's not a hill I'm going to die on, just bitch about. Edited April 8, 2025 by gehringer_2 1 Quote

If you refer to individuals as disabled people or people with disabilities, then it's not offensive. If you refer to them as "the disabled" then it's dehumanizing. I do understand your overall point though. it is intent that matters. The idea is to respect everyone with respect and kindness. I would say that "injured list" makes more sense than "disabled list" because a disability is usually permanent whereas an injury generally heals. Edited April 8, 2025 by Tiger337 1 Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted April 8, 2025 Posted April 8, 2025 And now Jake Rogers has oblique "tightness". Playing in 38 degree weather won't help that, so he is a scratch today. I see an IL stint for him coming. Who's the next catcher, Nido? Then who gets lopped off the roster? Quote

Apropos of nothing, I have been wondering whether Margot is a Haitian-Dominican, since he has a French name and that's not uncommon there. Quote

But I would comment that again, the only reason 'disabled' now has this more narrowed concept attached to it is recent usage. In the general sense of English semantics, if you are unable to do something, you are disabled wrt it, so an injured player is disabled. At 50,000 ft with no other social context, that is perfectly good usage. Again, it doesn't bother me to use IL instead of DL at all. I'm just amused by the way the wheel turns. Quote
