I don't think people realize how deep the Dodgers are. All three of their OF positions are locked up for the next three years (at least) and they have six of their top 10 prospects are OF'rs. Not to mention who they get in the draft this year. There's no room for them. I think the Dodgers would happily trade two of them to get Skubal and then have the inside track on signing him long term. Or at least show Skubal what LA's truly like for a few months.

I'm sticking with my prediction for Skubal:

De Paula
Sirota (Rather have Quintero than both of these guys but meh)
River Ryan
Brady Smith

It's good to be optimistic. But in reality, the Dodgers have a 9 game lead in their division right now and have given up the least amount of runs in MLB. I just don't see them sending over 4 can't miss prospects for the possibility of a 3 month rental. If those prospects are really that highly thought of, other teams would also be offering them established players for some of them. If Detroit does end up trading Skubal, I really hope we get a haul. But keeping expectations lower won't lead to as much disappointment.

Like I said, much of that is click bait. Harris has never swung any big deals, but like you said, we'll see.

The national "pundits" do not know any more than any of us.  The ideas they throw out there might be good discussion points, but almost nothing they say ever happens.

Just like the hundreds of "mock drafts." Writers, justifying their jobs...

Acquiring Skubal at the deadline for the Dodgers would give them an inside track of signing him long term though.

If they trade Skubal I want quality over quantity. Just get one real solid piece with 6 years control in a key position. I don't want four high ceiling blowouts. I want a high floor player- someone sound defensively that can BANG. We need  POWER. Preferably right-handed but there is a real shortage of it everywhere in the game right now.

I want that, too. If no one offers that, would you be okay getting whatever we can for Skubal, or would you rather keep him at that point? I myself am not sure what I would want in that case.

Beware the Dodgers

They generally do not trade away prospects they actually covet and I think their prospects rankings are getting the Yankees treatment from the 90s and early 00's: "look at the Dodgers, they have 69 top prospects" and then 67 of them fail horribly when they get to the big leagues.

Today I am holding on to Skubal under your scenario but come deadline, which I think is your question, it has to be better than the draft pick and worth the damage to my (Harris) future trade abilities so no. I mean if Harris "dumps" Skubal - perhaps the most coveted deadline target of all time -  then he really isn't qualified for the position.

I don't think the Dodgers trade for Skubal because they feel like they need him to win the WS.  I think they trade him to keep him from going to a team like the Brewers.  So that is the angle the Tigers need to go.  You wait till the end and simply take the best option and play teams against each other.

I am wondering if the situation next year will get more or less for Skubal.  On one point, teams like the Dodgers might want to get another championship before there is a harder cap.  On the other end, that is why you need top prospects with years of control.  So it will be interesting.

That's not true for the good ones.

I can’t see him dumping Skubal for a J.D. Martinez-type return. I think he sees the value in the pick enough so if he doesn’t get a return that they project exceeds it, he’ll hold Skubal. But tell you what, if he ends up holding Skubal, he’s going to get an ear full of **** about it for months on end. As it is, anything short of a top 20 prospect, or multiple top 100s, is gonna make people mad. His needle is so narrow it’s practically no win for him.

That’s his own fault though.

I actually think the "Tarik Skubal situation" was a thorn in his side and wrench in his plans ( forcing him to accelerate his timeline)  and he will be happy it's over one way or the other.

To an extent I agree. Newhouser, Lolich and Skubal. Best southpaws in Tigers history. And Skubal will be the only one without a ring.

Its mostly clickbait. Speculating. Waste of time, they have little actual insider knowledge.

I hope that is not the case.  Nothing ever goes according a plan and a good GM needs to have the flexibility to alter his plan when a good opportunity arises.

It wasn't like the situation came at him after the fact, Skubal's FA data was known when Harris took the job - it was a constraint - but was something he had to be planning around from day one.

That's why he might as well stick to his guns and see the plan through he and Chris Ilitch agreed upon, versus zigging and zagging in response to the media and fan pressure of the moment, and accept that no one will be OK with his decisions except possibly the one guy. An ear full of **** is an occupational hazard for him that he should just tune out. I'm still going to give him the chance to spool out his plan.

What plan did he and Ilitch agree upon?  I agree he should not be swayed by fans and media, but I am not sure if there is a specific plan in a specific time frame.  I suspect that they will keep doing what they are doing and that some years will be good and others not as good.

What may have changed is that he might not have anticipated just how dominant Skubal would become.  Once it became clear that he was a perennial ace, there was an opportunity to push a little harder to win now and there was also the knowledge that it would be really difficult to keep him.

Here is the plan he and Ilitch agreed upon.

They seem to be doing all that, but I don't think there is any timeline where we can expect the plan to be met.  I don't think there is any specific point where we can say they accomplished what they set out to do.  It's very fluid.  Maybe Clark and Anderson will help next year, but Skubal and Torres and perhaps Mize will be gone.  So, I don't know that they'll necessarily be closer to winning a championship. They they might add some more prospects after that but then Greene, Carpenter, Torkelson will be gone.  The future is now and at this point I think the plan should be to try to have a contending team every year.
