Since Ernie was respnsibile for having him do it he got in trouble. 1 Quote

It definitely was not a conservative rendering of the song, and given that the country was in the throes of the 1968 election, which was a referendum on Nixonian conservatism versus Great Society liberalism, that rendition simply became a flashpoint. Imagine the heads that exploded when Hendrix did his version at Woodstock. Feliciano’s version sounds relatively tame today, especially taken against the American Idol-style renditions that typify pre-game anthems today. 1 Quote

Edman85 Posted yesterday at 12:31 PM Posted yesterday at 12:31 PM Benetti is the leading candidate to take the NBC Sunday Night Baseball gig. Wouldn't affect his Tigers role. His days off would just be Sunday instead of Saturday. Quote
chasfh Posted yesterday at 01:20 PM Posted yesterday at 01:20 PM I think Benetti’s gonna be gone within a couple of years. Maybe we’ll get Shep back … 🦆🦆🦆 1 Quote
IdahoBert Posted yesterday at 01:41 PM Posted yesterday at 01:41 PM I don’t know how I missed this thread discussion about Ernie and Feliciano. I was there at the fifth game of the World Series in 1968 when José Feliciano sang his version of the Star-Spangled Banner and by my recollection, people in the third base box seats where I was sitting were more stunned than angry about it. When I got home and became aware of the news regarding it, I was really perplexed. It makes me love Ernie even more. 2 Quote

It’s difficult these days to imagine how any treatment of the song other than a martial rendition was considered borderline treason by some, and beyond borderline by others. Thank you, Jose Feliciano and Jimi Hendrix. Quote
theroundsquare Posted yesterday at 02:36 PM Posted yesterday at 02:36 PM i remember seeing ted nugent play the star-spangled banner at the pistons season opener, maybe 1993 or 1994, that was pretty out there. i wonder what he would think of that today. Quote
Shinzaki Posted yesterday at 03:02 PM Posted yesterday at 03:02 PM Roseanne Barr did a rendition that was...different Quote

Had he ever played it before to end a concert? (etc..) It was apparently a spur of the moment decision. Edited yesterday at 03:37 PM by gehringer_2 Quote

If I can trust ChatGPT, Hendrix had done shorter versions of SSB before but not with all the effects. He claimed it was spontaneous. He was performing late Sunday night, early Monday morning after many of the concert goers had made their way out. He was also not performing with his regular band at the time, but with a transitional group he had put together. SSB was also at the end of improvisation after Voodoo Child, and he said it wasn't planned, just came in the moment 1 Quote
oblong Posted yesterday at 03:56 PM Posted yesterday at 03:56 PM I like to watch Carlos Santana at Woodstock perform Soul Sacrifice and I recently learned that he didn't think he was playing yet and Jerry Garcia gave him some acid... then they called them up. 2 Quote

I had a similar experience (although mine was not in person) when I heard Marvin Gaye's rendition before the 1983 nba all-star game. It rocked my world and remains my favorite rendition, along with Jose's 1 Quote

oblong Posted yesterday at 06:05 PM Posted yesterday at 06:05 PM My favorite SSB anecdote is Karen Newman did her thing early on in her career and on the radio Paul Woods says something about "now that the audition tape is made...." He's still here doing games. She's not. Quote
