Something I just put together.  Keider Montero and he were the battery on Sunday.  Montero and Framber Valdez are from Venezuela.  I hope he's the glue to make those guys better versions of themselves.

Also, non-political digression... not veering into politics for this thread.  Man...Venezuela...mein gott in himmell with that poor country.

Kind of amazing they can still generate major league-caliber baseball players.

I know losing Skubal and Mize is tough.  But they’re only 2.5 GB.  Why can’t they beat the odds and make the playoffs?  It’s baseball.  Wacky stuff happens all the time.

It's going to happen

I have no right to believe that the Tigers have a really good shot. So why do I?

Because most of the teams they are battling with are no better than them.  This is why I wanted them to stand pat (or at least keep Mize), but it's water under the bridge now.

Looks like Jobe and Anderson are joining the rotation immediately.  No bullpen games.

Edit: yeah, I'm late on that

Yeah, but it’s more than that.

That's one of those stats that just sounds like BS when you hear it. And it turns out it is. I just picked 2006 as a random year the Tigers had good pitching and checked the schedule, I was curious how often 2 shutouts in a 5 day span happen, and it happened 5 times through June, so as I expected it's not uncommon. Pudge was the starting catcher for back to back shutouts against Houston on June 27th and June 28th.

This must be restricting it to exactly a five day span between games, and that would make this the absolute dumbest one of those ridiculous cherry picked stats I've ever seen.

Because it’s baseball and wacky stuff happens.  They’re 1.5 and 4.5 games behind now in early August.  I don’t want to participate in a pity parade.  Yes, losing Skubal and Mize sucks and hurts their chances for this season.  But the offense looks better.  If they can get good starting pitching and adequate relief pitching, they can make a run.  The second if is probably the sticking point.

And we’re hopelessly addicted to the Tigers, so what else can we do but root for them?

Baseball reference has their playoff odds at 40% now.  They’ve increased about 20% over the last week and 30% over the last month.

Hey, why not acknowledge they have a playoff chance?

Well, they are hitting a LOT better now, so there is that.

It's a really good point... This is a more talented lineup today than the one they were running out even in June.

Replacing Rogers with Valencia, More Max Clark and less Jahmai Jones/James Outman, Gleyber/Javy back, etc.

assuming that McGonigle nets them a PPI pick in 2027 when he wins ROY award.

You can also get PPI if a pre-arbitration player finishes top 3 in MVP voting (see: Dingler) or top 3 in CY Young voting (see: Melton), but...

a team can only get a single PPI pick each year even if 2, 3 or more players are eligible to earn a PPI

I am no expert on this, but my understanding is that signing an extension means no comp pick is awarded for a ROY win. The timing of Clark’s promotion (ie waiting another week or two would have preserved his rookie elegibility) didn’t make sense in context of a team selling. Maybe a sign tigers expect an extension? Could also be tigers don’t have as much hope in Clark’s chances to win ROY…

He is eligible because he didn't sign that until after he came up.

On the one thing I would like him to get more strikeouts than he does. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to shred his elbow seeking more strikeouts.

In the meantime, his sub-.200 BABIP can't be sustainable, can it?

What to do, what to do ...

Don't do anything until he needs it.

Peter Chase is the Baseball Communications Director for the Detroit Tigers. It's in his job description to seek out and report esoteric stats like this, no matter how nonsensical.

I could be wrong, but I think the pre-arbitration player had to be a top 100 prospect on at least 2 of the "official
sites and up for the full season his rookie year - the same qualifiers as ROY.

Only if they were top 100 prospects on 2 of the 3 systems used and got a full year of service as a rookie.

Dingler is ineligible because he burned his rookie eligibility in 2024. Melton burned his last year. Neither can net a pick. You can say they should have ridden with Serven to preserve Dingler's eligibility, but I don't think he was a Top 100 guy. And they also barely made the playoffs and may not have without him.

McGonigle signed his extension after, so a ROY would net a pick. That pick is right after the first round, and the Yankees, Dodgers, and maybe Phillies could move behind it with their penalties. Max Clark probably isn't getting sent down, but he is a 2026 Tiger, so an IL stint is a possibility to preserve his rookie eligibility.

Also, McGonigle can only net one pick. It isn't two picks if he wins ROY and is 3rd in MVP, and it isn't another pick next year if he backs up a ROY with an MVP.

River Ryan would be eligible if he doesn't come up before September 4 or so.

I would bet that over the winter the front office's instructions to Troy won't be, "don't change a thing until you start sucking".

I get the impression that Clark is not the type to sign an extenson which goes beyond free agency, but we don't really know these guys.

Being from the Indianapolis area so a native midwesterner, it wouldn't shock me if he and the wife settle in here that they decide to stay long term.

Then again you never know what drives people.

Jansen quote.....I like this from him.

“If you’re going to worry about that stuff, you’re going to feel miserable,” Jansen said. “I’m not going to do that. It’s unfortunate we lost two great guys. But did the lineup change? Tell me, did the lineup change? The lineup is the same. Did the bullpen change? The bullpen didn’t change.
Detroit Tigers Tickets: Buy tickets to see the Detroit Tigers this season.
“At the end of the day, who plays the most? It’s the lineup and the bullpen.”
