His deal protects him against the possibility of a work stoppage by paying him a 14 million $ bonus now and only 1 million in 2027. It's a win win but Tigermojo has good point being a free agent under 30 is big so tip slightly to the team. Having said that 150 million in hand is something I wouldn't say no to.

Wow. A lot of this contract stuff is over my head, but I wasn’t expecting this to happen. This crop of young bulldogs that have been taught to play the game. “the Tigers Way“ are exciting. And the fact that they - at least in the case of Kevin - have a commitment to playing in the city of Detroit is incredible.

We did this for Keith and McGonigle.   Hopefully we can do the same with Max Clark once he gets going and keep that core group together long term.

We can add Dillon Dingler to that, for as long as he's going to be any good, since he's already under team control through his age 31 season.

Its really beneficial to both sides.

For teams they get these superstars on cheap deals. Sure a few end up in clunkers but the money now a days is silly so even if you have to eat 60 million in five years its not a death knell.

For players, it might delay free agency by a year or two. But your still getting there around 30 and you get insane amount of guarenteed moeny and are set for life.

Heck, if I got an MLB rookie salary for one year I'd be set for life.

~$600K?  Depends on how long you plan to live and what you’re wanting to do.

So, is there any evidence the Tigers are drafting players who have a greater ability to play at Comerica Park specifically? Are they not drafting 6’6” high strike out pull hitters that are better suited to playing in band box parks?

I really like this new attitude around MLB of teams identifying talent and signing them long term at a young age. Keeping a core of players together is old school, even if the money isn't old school. 😅😅

Seems to be less profile/toolsy types and more focus on players who do fundamental things very well, like pitch recognition, plate discipline, and defensive instincts.

When they first moved to Comerica Park, they were always trying to get guys who “ would fit the ballpark”……and then we ended up with a bunch of speedy leadoff hitters that didnt get on base (Alex Sanchez, Roger Cedeno, etc.) and below average utility guys who could play multiple positions on the field (Jose Macias, Craig Paquette, Shane Halter).

We are finally at the “draft guys who are fundamentally good at the game” strategy

At 61?    I don't have expensive tastes, 600K would be brilliant.    I could move to Ireland

Have you been lately?  Dublin in particular is one of the more expensive cities in Europe.  Not Switzerland expensive but still a bit spendy.

Living is smaller Irish towns can be affordable though.  If I were retire to Ireland, it would be that.

Has there been any reporting on whether the contract structure allows them to stay under the luxury tax threshold?

It would be great to stay below and not lose the competitive balance pick, international pool money, and have downgrades to any picks they get for whoever of Skubal/Mize/Flaherty is turns down a qualifying offer and signs elsewhere.

Please don't take any of the above as being unhappy about the signing though.

@Edman85 will have the answer to this. His website shows they currently have slightly more than $2.5 million of room. The contract starts next year. The signing bonus gets averaged out over the course of the contract. I'm not sure if any of the bonus applies to this year.

I read somewhere that it was structured to not affect the ppi.
