Lee doesn't count because he wasn't on the team yet when they acquired Outman which is what my post was about.  At that time, they had 5 infieders (Torkelson, Torres, McGonigle, Keith, McKinstry) and 6 outfielders (Greene, Carpenter, Vierling, Perez, Outman, Jones).

I don't even see Jones in the mix for OF since he hasn't been out there since May 1.

I think you misunderstood. I wasn't bashing him for trading Flaherty or questioning the return, it was more about his inability to make any significant trades. You brought up Lorenzen....wasn't that in 2023? Really reaching to find any trades? And fans are speculating what he'll get on a Skubal trade? I dont think Harris is capable of pulling off a trade for one of baseballs best pitchers. But we'll see, I hope to be surprised by Boras allowing the Tigers to extend him.

The only thing that seems certain is that no matter what Harris does by August 3, you're gonna hate it. 😉

Outfielders...switch McKinstry and Jones and totally correct. I dont think Hinch would use Jones in the OF but Zach does get some time out there. And TBH. I kinda like McKinstry in CF better than Vierling.

Jones has played 7 games in the outfield this year.  He's an outfielder.  He's not an infielder.  Even if people don't want to classify him as an outfielder, the acquisition of Outman and the DFA of Short left them with only five infielders which was the only point I was making in my original innocuous post,

I guess that's what we do here though.

Yes we do.

Jahmai hasn't played since May 1 for a reason, and I think the reason is that he's not viewed as an outfielder for this team anymore, rather than we have more outfielders than we know what to do with.

so what exactly do 'we' view him as? I suppose he does fill a role most teams don't even have: "NHRPH"

If there are only two players left on the bench - Colt Keith and Jahmai Jones - and an outfielder gets injured, who is going to to replace the injured player?

He played RF on May 6.  He came in as a PH and stayed in the game as RF.

But he was good last year, so thou shalt be kept this season.

Your attitude confuses me. Are you saying you approve of the lack of any trades to improve the Tigers in the last 3 years? I asked you what you thought were his best trades and you brought up a pitcher he traded in 2023. But it's my complaining about him not doing his job that seems to bother you. Confusing...

That makes sense, and yes, officially Jones is an outfielder. McKinstry is a utility player who can play the infield or outfield. So he could be classified as both. IMO, I wouldn't ever want to see Jones in the OF, or at bat. He really is a waste of a roster spot. Hopefully. Harris is watching the waiver wire to pick up a RH hitter. Where's Ibanez at these days...😆

Lefty killer off the bench. Not that he's fulfilling the role at the moment. Hey, I don't like him on the team now any more than anyone else does.

You really do have trouble interpreting winky faces, don't you? It means I'm kidding around with you! 😂 (BTW, this face I just posted, with the eyes closed, big smile, and tears coming out of the eyes? That means I'm laughing because I'm amused.)

I find the degree to which you complain about Harris kind of entertaining, so please, keep having at it. I don't find it offensive at all, in case you were thinking I do. I am simply on a different page with you as to what Harris should be doing to improve the organization in the long term, in that I believe in his building for the long term instead of gambling the future on the possibility of a few more wins today, something that generally has a roughly 50-50 chance of succeeding anyway.

I see this as no more than a difference in opinion on the direction of the team. I prefer one way, you prefer another. Vive le difference. I also don't see that difference of opinion as a personal struggle between me and you. Hope this clarifies things some.

I think it’s hard to get upset about moves that were not made because there are always two sides to a deal.

Personally, I would have liked Harris to have gotten one of the possible deals done for Bregman that were rumored.

I definitely was hoping for it at the time.  The rumor where he would have accepted a 6-year deal with one year opt out would have been ideal as it turned out.  Supposedly the Tigers wanted a 2-year opt out.  Who knows if it any of was true though.

Jahmai has one job on this team: hit left-handed pitching. That's it. Anything else he does would be due to emergency, as you basically state here. If Dingler and Rogers both got hurt in the same game and Colt and Jahmai were the only two players left on the bench, Jahmai and not Colt would have to put the tools on.

To answer your question, the possibility of the option to move McKinstry from the infield to the outfield complicates this a bit.

So, let's make McKinstry 1/2 infielder 1/2 outfielder and Jones 1/2 OF.  So, right after the Outman transaction, they had 1/2 infielder and 2 1/2 outfielders.

We can complain..but they don't have any pivots. The platoons have to hit and that's it.

Hinch whistling past the graveyard a bit there. Jones’ EV may be holding but almost every other secondary stat is down. he has not been the same hitter as last season just having some bad BaBIP luck. ( Ks up, LD rate down, hard hit down)

Quotes like that, though understandable as managers support their players, make me wish nobody had asked the question.

Jones is listed as a DH on the MLB roster for the Tigers. Even without Outman, we have 5 outfielder, if you include McKinstry. But yes, if we lost every extra outfielder, Jones would be going out there. It's a bit like VMart playing 1st base, in an emergency, that was his position.

But like I've said. I would rather see Colt or Carp hit against a LH pitcher than to see Jones PH. At this point, those guys have better chances to get a hit than Jones does. And Hinch really didn't answer the question, did he? How much more time does Jones get?

exactly - Hinch is postulating that despite his lack of production other managers are still game planning around not facing Jones. That's not giving your opponent very much credit.
