While discussing a playoff rotation seems a bit premature, I think it will be Skubal, Mize, Valdez and Flaherty (unless he regresses).

Melton’s stuff plays better in the bullpen as he is one of our few pitchers with swing and miss. He could also impact multiple games, like he did last postseason. Having him, Montero and a healthy Jobe/Vest, would both strengthen and lengthen the pen.

The way our offense is clicking, and if we can get Torres back, we should be OK.  I

Not sure if Meadows can make it back, but I would not be surprised to see Clark before the end of the season, especially if they view him as an upgrade to Outman.

As long as you’re offering Jansen, why not offer Tork and Jahmai to sweeten the deal?

honestly, I don’t see anyone taking on Jansen, the way he’s been blowing games lately.

Any team selling isn’t interested in winning. It would only be a salary dump, as outlined.

nobody is sending the tigers anything in exchange for tork

You’re right.  But how about this idea.  He’s slashing around ..230/.330/.480 in his last 14 and last 28 days.  Can we just sign up for that in some kind of consistent production and call it good?

It would suck to do the Skubal trade, make the playoffs, and then get dominated by Skubal.

If he dominates in the head to head matchups whilst the Tigers win the World Series, I think I can deal with it.

I actually think that is the most risk averse position to take. Assuming Torres is back, we could still use one infielder, an upgrade on Tork, a DH, and two OFs. Lots of easy upgrades. And the downgrade from Skubal to say Verlander/Jobe/Montero, while significant, could largely be offset by the right moves and position the team better for the long haul. Assuming we get prospects for Skubal, what could we get if we flipped some of those plus carp and/or Tork? This is where DD was useful but I don’t think Scottie is as imaginative.

Yeah, Harris doesnt seem like his strong suit is making deals. I <thought> he was good at building up our farm system but I read our farm system is now ranked....22nd? I guess Melton and McGonigle being in the big leagues made a big difference?

I question the building up the farm system.  As an example, where is the OF depth in the upper minors?  Max Clark is it?

Some truth on the surface, though I don't believe players are as prejudiced against Framber as fans might be, even taking the cross-up incident into account. Players are super aware of and sensitive to how organizations treat their players, and if they see the Tigers sidelining Framber, a premier free agent sign, for merely average performance and seemingly out of spite, I would think they would be very wary of getting themselves into a situation where they themselves might be sidelined for less than stellar performance.

If we went to a 4 man playoff rotation and didn't trade Skubal or Mize, who's spot would you think Valdez would take? I dont think any imaginary free agent would like to sign with a team that wasn't serious about winning. Game 5 or game 7 in a series with Mize, Flaherty or Melton rested and ready to go and you would start Valdez? Seriously? Just to encourage some possible free agent to come to Detroit? I really hope Hinch has to make that decision, but sorry to say, I don't think he would agree with you.

But if he hasn't done a real good job building up the farm system, what's left? Good trades? Nope. Above average free agent signings? Questionable. Making the owner a boatload of money? Bingo! 😅😅

I don’t think that is a fair take. He’s only been here for 3 offseasons/drafts and is already getting dividends from picks his system made. If you go back and look at the farm system he inherited at the start of 2023 it was pretty rough. Sure pitching depth and outfield depth need help but I would argue that these are easier to find plug and play players compared to the infield.

I wouldn’t get too wrapped in who would be pitching in what spot.  It’s likely that the Tigers would be playing in the first round and the rotation at that point in time would just keep as is.  The order of the pitching staff may not matter after Skubal at that point.

And given the variable of health, it wouldn’t be out of the question for a a theoretical 4 man rotation on July 9 to be not the same once October starts.

I think we are going to go that anyway. I foresee him running out the string here through 2028.

Yeaaaah, that's not gonna happen. We're fans, it doesn't matter to us, but to people inside the game, it would be a huge hairy deal to sideline a newly-signed marquee starting pitcher even for just average performance. Framber would have to have a pre-June-1-Flaherty type collapse to justify it. Otherwise, good luck getting other marquee free agents to sign here.

So, a player would rather sign with a team that doesn't use their best players in the playoffs?  Not sure I want that guy on my team.

I wouldn't think of it as spite at all.   Completely performance based.

First of all, thank you for calling it the "pen".

If we move Flaherty to the pen, we'd be doing that on the basis of his pre-June 1 performance, because since then, he has been literally the best pitcher on the Tigers.

I think if the playoffs start today, we would be looking at Skubal/Mize/Flaherty/Framber in the playoff rotation, with Melton in reserve in case one of them gets hurt or has a ... ahem ... meltdown.

I would not give Framber starts over Melton based on current performance (which of course may change). If Smokes were picking pitchers it would be the 3 or 4 best, period. Is there an implication out there that Hinch doesn't have the cojones to play his best players to win a series?

And releasing Jones (which sure better happen sometime) will only add $ to our payroll, albeit minimal $,

Now we know who Harris listens to.

You can run your team any way you like, but for The Detroit Tigers, if the playoffs start on July 9, it’s Skubal/Mize/Framber/Flaherty.

Why is Mize listed second?  Shouldn't the senior big money guys have top priority?

Edman would be the one to confirm, but I believe if another team paid all but the minimum, we’d only take on the remaining on our tax.

Similarly , if we paid down Skubal’s contract to get a better prospect, I’m almost certain what portion we pay counts against us for tax purposes.

Correct
