Because I feel like he has shown enough instances of taking on salary or overpaying for dudes that digging in and spending to keep his first true star is something in his wheelhouse. Just because he hasn’t signed “that” contract yet doesn’t mean he won’t ever do it. I’m not gonna stake my claim either way. I’m just saying it’s well within the realm of possibility. I get the sense you think it’s closer to zero than 10%. And that’s fine because these numbers are made up anyway and the score doesn’t matter. We don't even disagree on that. I am not at all the guy saying we should extend Skubal to whatever age he wants but this particular ilitch is simply too cheap to do that. That is definitely someone else. I disliked Ilitch as long as he clung to Al Avila who was running the franchise into the rocks before our very eyes. But my view of Chris started to turn around once he hired Harris, and my view of him improved as it became clear he was willing to spend on the infrastructure needed to create a consistent winner. Ilitch also proved he would spend on players when he spent on Baez, so I know he will spend on future players as well. I don't know whether he will sign Skubal, and I am not sure I would even want that if it includes the back half of his 30s, but I don't doubt that he would if he felt doing so was warranted. Quote

That being said I would absolutely throw in Max Anderson with them if that helps get the job done. Also, there is nothing in it for Seattle to make a Vierling-for-Hancock trade, unless their only goal is to miss the playoffs so they can help the Detroit Tigers win. 1 Quote

papalawrence Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Seattle can get much more than Vierling for Hancock. If anything, I'd see him as part of a package for Skubal. Hancock and a hi bat prospect for Skubal. Quote

So I’m not sure they’d look to acquire Skubal unless they’re going to send out 2-3 SPs instead of just Hancock. 1 Quote

There are 10 or so teams that don't know what direction they are going to go, so those teams (Tigers included) should not do that. For the other 20, that shrinks your market, and there could be players/prospects on those 10 teams that you could have if you wait. 2 1 Quote

It takes two to trade. There's a reason more trades happen closer to the deadline. More information is a good thing, and that goes both ways. 1 Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted July 25 Posted July 25 For the record, I’m still on the trade Skubal train….but IF we buy. What do we need and what are you comfortable giving up? Obviously bullpen, but we do need to add to this offense a bit. Is just getting Javy back enough? Do we promote Clark? Can we really keep running Vierling/McKinstry/Outman out there all August and September? Quote

Edman85 Posted July 25 Posted July 25 One consideration at the trade deadline that sometimes flies under the radar is off-season roster crunch. You can sell off and acquire a bunch of close-to-the-majors guys, but if you crowd your 40-man roster, you have some tough decisions to make in December. Some teams make trades at the deadline with this in mind, and a team with room to spare may be able to get a guy they like for the 40-man roster that another team is looking to get ahead of a crunch. I just did a quick off-season 40 man look and think, despite 11 players on the 60-Day IL, the Tigers have plenty of room to spare and may be able to seek out a bargain in that regard next week. Also, adding Clark prematurely before season's end is not going to cause any tough choices over the offseason. 4 Quote

Also, adding Clark prematurely before season's end is not going to cause any tough choices over the offseason. I was looking at the 40-man a lot the last few days just to see the flexibility we would have and you’re right—there’s a ton of room if we just non-tender a bunch of these guys who aren’t worth keeping. I agree with all of those NT/DFAs and would even cut all of the Bubble guys except Miller and maybe Jung and Watson. Quote
NorthWoods Posted July 25 Posted July 25 https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7466876/2026/07/24/dodgers-mlb-trade-deadline-prospects/ Exploring the Dodgers’ wealth of outfield prospects as the trade deadline nears Tibbs had an electric start to this season but slowed down when he played through a forearm injury that limited him to designated hitter duty. Still, he’s been one of the most dynamic hitters in the minors this season in his first taste of Triple A. Through his first 416 plate appearances, he’s hit .290/.411/.548 with a 143 wRC+. It’s tough to sneeze at what Ehrhard has done at 23 years old in his first taste of Triple A. He’s hit .286 with a .393 on-base percentage and .485 slugging percentage, good for a 126 wRC+. His best production has come over the last 28 days, with a 1.058 OPS over that span. There are bat-to-ball skills, solid swing decisions and an overall intriguing package to go with the fact that he can play all three outfield spots. 111111111111111111111111111111111 Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted July 25 Posted July 25 (edited) If we make any significant trades with any of the following teams, this is who I specifically would be satisfied getting in return: Dodgers: Mike Sirota. .472 obp this year across two levels (with decent sample sizes at both levels.). Walks nearly as much as he strikes out. Has less power than some of the other Dodgers outfield prospects but does have 14 HRs this year and is OPSing over 1.000 both this year and for his career. He’s 23 and right handed. Would be a great addition to the top of the order with Clark and McGonigle as a high OBP guy who makes opposing pitchers work. Especially if we don’t re-sign Torres. Solid speed and defense can play at multiple OF spots, but he’d look great every day in RF. Brewers: Josh Adamczewski. Corner outfielder. .432 obp over three years in the minors. Another guy who walks nearly at the same rate as he strikes out. Not a ton of power but has 20 doubles and 13 HRs in 78 games at AA. Doesn’t have a grade out real great defensively, but should be serviceable. Another guy in the Clark/McGonigle mold who gets on base and doesn’t chase much. If you can’t tell, that’s the kind of bat I want us to get moreso than power. Greene/Tork/Dingler/Carpenter have plenty of power—we need to get guys who can be on base menaces in front of them and wear down the opposing pitchers. Likewise with the Brewers, their 1B/3B guy Andrew Fischer has top level power and gets on base .400+. He strikes out a ton, so wouldn’t be my first choice—but the power bat plays if we eventually give up on Keith or Tork Phillies: Francisco Renteria. Not ideal since he’s just in rookie ball, so at least a couple years away—but he grades at 50 or over in all areas and is one of the top international prospect signings. None of the rest of the Phillies prospects do much for me even though they seem to think they have enough to land Skubal. Mariners: Michael Arroyo. 2B/OF who hits right handed. Walks at around a 14% rate. Strikeouts at about 23%, so reasonable ratio for a RH guy with good gap power. Pretty consistently a .400 obp guy in the minors. Is in AAA Tulsa now. Has some speed and the 2B/OF flexibility could be useful given our roster build. Tampa: Theo Gillen. Their top prospect. Outfielder at AA with 60 grade hit tool and 60 grade speed tool. 36 steals already this year plus last year. .291/.426/.471/.897 career minor league slash line. K rate is slightly high but his BB rate is good to offset it. Caden Bodine is another guy I’d want. Switch hitting catcher at AA who is good defensively and played college ball. Walks more than he strikes out and has only Kd 29 times in 92 games (367 ABs). Modest power but absolutely a guy who could play a lot and fully split catching duties with Dingler so we can DH him more without having to play an offensive black hole. I’m not high on Liranzo and Briceno needs to be looked at as a 1B, so C is a bit of a depth need for us. Valencia is poor defensively and Oliveto is a long way away from being a likely option. This would be a good get IMO. The switch hitting option should appeal highly to Harris/Hinch. Plus Tampa has an even higher rated catcher prospect so he is “expendable” in that sense. If we make a move I want a close to ready RF/1B type who has advanced BB rates, high OBP and low-ish K rates. Preferably RH or SH since we are so lefty heavy. Power is a bonus but not what I want us to focus on. Pitching help would also be nice but it’s a bit harder to project and there’s the high injury risks. I trust Harris, Fetter and company on scouting and finding pitching gems than I do on finding positional players, hence why I want the focus to be on acquiring offensive help. No need to trade someone like Skubal or Mize for a package built around pitching unless we are getting an absolute elite prospect. I want the top of our order for the next 8 years to be three guys who are just a complete pain in the butt to get out and who drive that pitch count up. Then hit them with Dingler/Greene/Tork/Carp/Keith/Lee who are all very dangerous but who have more swing and miss. Eliminate the bottom of the order black hole problem and make each trip through the lineup a chore. Reduce the quick innings for the opposing pitcher and allow our starters to get more rest between innings. Melton/Montero and hopefully Jobe are so good at getting quick innings that we need to use that to our advantage as much as possible. Dump the fat off the roster of Vierling/Perez/McKinstry/Cruz/etc. and build a bench around guys who actually do something at a high level instead of guys you can just plug and play anywhere who aren’t actually good at anything.
