I think if we traded him before the year started, we could have had De Paula. But since we waited, we got less (which is how it works). I think this is the best return we could have gotten as well because we waited to deal him. Before the year, I think we could have gotten the full Wrobleski, De Paula, Ryan, Smith package. Hindsight is always easier though ehh. Quote

Certainly the results would have been better for the Tigers if Skubal had had that work done before the season - OTOH, maybe the nano-probe system would not have been used/available. That's why I feel it's different then to just let him walk. Torres we should be able to get something decent as well. But Mize is the best starter on the market right now and I think we should capitalize on that. This may be true (debatable given Casey's injury history), but ultimately in order to maximize value in trades, you have to be willing to risk that teams may not be able to get to the asking price you want. We're lucky with Casey in that he can return a sandwich pick and that there's a pretty good case to keep him given their position in the standings. Not saying that they should under no circumstances trade him, but they shouldn't be desperate to take any deal thrown in front of them either. Quote

I'd just rather have the prospect closer to our roster. But if we hold him, I won't be devastated. Perfect world we move him, then re-sign him in the off season. Quote
mtutiger Posted August 3 Posted August 3 25 minutes ago, chasfh said: Also, it's fairly probably that the return we would get on an oft-injured just-short-of-proven front-of-the-rotation guy is basically the same as a sandwich comp pick, so we might as well get the best of Casey for the rest of this season in pursuit of our playoff appearance. To tack onto my latest post, I'm with you in the sense that I don't think other teams will be able to offer up enough. Which is OK... they aren't where the Royals or Angels are in the standings, they have the ability as it stands to give us (at a minimum) a couple more months of entertaining baseball. There is nothing wrong with that. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 so at this point do the Tigers hold some kind of record for the combination of most pitchers traded that went on to win Cy Youngs plus the number of Cy Youngs won by Tiger pitchers we subsequently traded? Quote
Tenacious D Posted August 3 Posted August 3 So far it looks like teams want to hold onto their prospects. When teams are acquiring SP like Kevin Gausman, Tyler Mahle, Bailey Falter and Freddie Peralta, all of whom are putting up pedestrian numbers this season, it appears that teams are taking the approach that Harris did last year—buying low without surrendering anything of significance. Might make it worth holding Mize if this is the prevailing approach. Quote

I am not usually in favor of buying relievers, but given their current bullpen it would be hard to do worse. The Tigers have a second problem though, which is that two of the guys that have been the biggest problem are the guys they spent big money on - Finnegan and Jansen - and it's always tricky to hide/stop using the big money guys even if you bring in other arms. And the fact that Arraez and a reliever only got the Giants 2 A ball relievers indicates Torres won't likely bring back much, which if that's the case, I'd just as soon keep him for our playoff push. SoCalTiger Posted August 3 Posted August 3 (edited) It seems our team is set as it sits. I'm not expecting any additions or subtractions today. We will be the underdogs going forward and the rookies will play a huge role. Sounds like fun. Edited August 3 by SoCalTiger 1 1 Quote

lordstanley Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I think the word "haul" needs to be banned from all trade talk going forward. It raises expectations prior to a trade, then sets an unfair bar when analyzing the return. 1 Quote
Hongbit Posted August 3 Posted August 3 What’s up in Toronto. 2 games worse than us and they acquire Jose Soriano a day after they traded Kevin Gausman. That seems like such a Mapleleafy thing to do. Quote

I asked Gemini a variation of this and they couldn't quite get it right but the Tigers are in the mix with the Dodgers. Detroit has Denny, Willie, Verlander, Max, and Skubal, plus they traded JV and Porcello and Robbie Ray, Max left as a FA, and of course there's Skubal waiting. I guess you could figure out whether to count Smoltz? The Dodgers though have had 8 players win for them... and they traded Pedro as a youngster 🙂 The 2014 Tigers alone had 5 players win 9 CYA. 1 Quote

But like it's been pointed out, Zyhir would be the #1 prospect on a lot of teams. And you could make a case River Ryan would be a #2-#3 prospect on a lot of teams as well. I think it was a great return. (Sure would have liked more, but still not too shabby for 2 month rental). 1 Quote

And the reality is that if the Brewers and Rays weren't going to play ball (and by all accounts, they weren't), that impacts the price that would ultimately be returned as well. That sort of nuance gets left out of a lot of trade talk.... there wasn't a bidding war for Skubal's services, which left them what the Dodgers were willing to offer up. Which in the grand scheme of things was fine. 1 Quote
papalawrence Posted August 3 Posted August 3 There is a conspiracy theory floating that owners wanted Skubal to end up with LAD to further emphasize the need for a salary cap. It's not just social media fodder, it includes folks like Bob Costas and Foul Territory. Quote

If what you mean is a guy with Old Hoss Radbourn's natural talents who was born to be 5'9" and 168 pounds, that's something different, and somewhat more possible in my opinion. Personally, I think that would be a tall order to make him as good as Old Hoss Radbourn was, for lots of reasons. We don't have time travel, so it's not possible to do do that. If we did, I am pretty sure that most players from the early eras of the game would fail today. I am interested in the best way to rank players across different eras. I don't think it's fair or particularly interesting to base it on "what would Honus Wagner be like if they transported him to today". 1 Quote
