SoCalTiger Posted June 24 Posted June 24 All I know is it ended up high in his glove. I think it hit the ground and bounced up into the glove. I think it’s a hit we got screwed. 1 Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted June 24 Posted June 24 I have been whining about not calling up Ben Malgeri for the last month. Quote

Bellinger had already released the ball and Riley was just a step past the base. Dirks called it a perfect throw. It wasn’t. It was simply a Joey Cora send. Quote
IdahoBert Posted June 24 Posted June 24 At least Torkelson took swings at the ball. He didn’t just watch strikes be called in the middle of the plate. So at least there’s that. Quote
chasfh Posted June 24 Posted June 24 I like that new building in the skyline in RF. There will probably be a couple or three more of those built in the 10-to-20-year range from now and that view will rival that of the Charlotte ballpark. Quote
Crazy Cat Gentleman Posted June 24 Posted June 24 (edited) when did de Jesus get not-terrible? he's been on a roll his past few appearances. Edited June 24 by Crazy Cat Gentleman Quote

That's the question as to whether or not he should be sent. Quote
chasfh Posted June 24 Posted June 24 Yikes, Kerry Carpenter, what else were you looking for on that first pitch?? Quote

There's probably a less than 92% of an adequate throw, right? I don't know... But the default break-even people have is 50/50, but that's not the correct math. Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 This is where we blame Cora for getting the key run thrown out at home plate, right? Quote

But the default break-even people have is 50/50, but that's not the correct math. I do think where the runner is in relation to the plate as the outfielder gets control of the ball should be a factor. Bellinger was already in the process of throwing when Riley’s foot is on the third base bag. No one makes it to the plate alive unless the throw was way more off than Bellinger’s throw already was. Something else you might have noticed in the picture: Joey Cora is way out of position as the third base coach for a ball hit to left field. He should be 25 or 30 or so feet past the bag with his body facing the LF addressing the ball and the runner around third at the same time, which would also put him in perfect line of sight by the runner. As it was he was practically even with the bag and simply did not have optimal view of the play developing. 1 Quote
Edman85 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 It does, but if the break even success rate is so low, I'm not convinced it matters that Greene was where he was. The 8% was going to be mostly dependent on the throw. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 1 hour ago, SoCalTiger said: I don’t wanna pick on torque, but that was another terrible stretch. Why doesn’t he stretch towards my eyes and get the ball sooner to get Goldsmith out instead of catching the ball even with the bag am I crazy? Does anybody else see this? I looked at the one last night and I think the issue was that the throw was so far off line that he had to get as far to the side of the throw as he could to reach it and allow for any imperfect bounce - so he did end up perpendicular to the path of the ball. Maybe could have played it differently but he might have judged his chances on an angled approach just weren't very good. So I was OK that that one if it was a matter of knowing your own limitations. You don't want it to end up being 2 bases. Tonight - I think he was on-line to the throw well enough, but yeah - I think he could have stretched more - he did not get to a full split, which might have been the difference. As a possible defense: he might have been worried that a heater from a pitcher might sail so he stayed in a more flex position - but I agree with you more tonight that he could have given it more on the Goldschmidt play. gehringer_2 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 they lost this on three plays - the bad Cora send, Casey gives in to Chislom on on a 3-2, Holton doesn't get the 164 hitting lefty. And as SCT notes, maybe a better stretch by Tork on the Goldschmidt dribbler. 1 Quote
chasfh Posted June 24 Posted June 24 The press asked AJ about Riley getting cut down at the plate. He characterized Bellinger as their best arm, and he said twice that they will look at all parts of the play tomorrow to see if they could have done it “a little bit better.” Yeah, he’s not happy with it, either.
