IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 If this team can’t even win with a 7–0 lead and a two time Cy Young winner on the mound, they will not make a run for it. And why would he even want to remain here? Quote
chasfh Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Apparently, this is the second game in a row I’ve seen an historic game at Comerica Park, because somebody just informed me this is the first time in Tigers history they took a seven-run lead into the seventh inning and lost the game. Quote
Tenacious D Posted July 29 Posted July 29 What do you mean by trolling? Because some of us see this as a flawed team? This game is just a microcosm of this season. It doesn’t matter if you have Skubal pitch 6 strong innings if the team can’t find a way to win these games. He’s a wasted asset that needs to be optimized at this point to help next season and beyond. Holding him would be irresponsible. 2 1 Quote
papalawrence Posted July 29 Posted July 29 I just vomited and sharted at the same time for the first time ever. The 2026 Detroit Tigers are to blame. And maybe that gas station coleslaw...... Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted July 29 Posted July 29 (edited) I’m quickly reaching the point where I never want us to spend on pitching again. Just draft/develop/promote from within or via minor league transactions. Paying Finnegan 8 million, Anderson 7 million, Jansen 9 million, Flaherty 10 million and Valdez 27.5 million for the results we’ve gotten is highway robbery. Edited July 29 by monkeytargets39 Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Anyone still foolish enough to think this is a playoff team? What a disgrace today was. Might as well trade Skubal. Quote

Will they make the playoffs? Doubtful. Is this current roster a playoff one? Well, the second best record in the AL since June 1 suggests they are one of the best in the league. +38 run differential for the season and around +70ish over the last two months. As Hinch has said, good team having a bad year. 1 Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Put that entire bullpen on the Double Dutch Bus and then drive that bus off The Gord and let the current sweep them away. Quote

And people will say you are being a hater for saying that, but that's it pretty much wrapped in a bow. Like it or not, this is the 2026 Detroit Tigers. And, wow, if today wasn't a microcosm of just that. Quote

As Hinch has said, good team having a bad year. I was talking to my wife about the 14-0 and the +/- differential. If you are a baseball table-top board gamer, these are the seasons you want to replay. Why? The team is basically set up to do what the stats say. Whatever this player or that player or this pitcher did to make the +/- what it is is more likely how a team is going to perform in a replay. A handful of months I finished a 1970 Detroit Tigers replay. The team finished 79-83. You figure with a few good dice rolls the team can finish .500, right? Well the W-L luck factor had the team supposed to have a 74-88 record. Guess which record my replay nailed. Yes, the 74-88 record. I explained to my wife this team probably would do much better in a replay because of that +/- , like you just mentioned. My wife pretended to be listening to me 🙂 and said she understood. There are reasons we can argue the team is better than this record and probably should be more reflective of the +/-. However, the reality of a record matters. This isn't someone rolling dice. This team is what the record says. You are your record. And there are reasons why they are where they are. This pen has been awful. You live the record. And maybe the Tigers are hesitant to make a ton of moves this offseason figuring the luck factor has to go back into their favor. But sometimes it's just plan luck as well. The Tigers are 12-20 in one-run games. Oddly, they are eight games below .500 as well. Coincidence? The Tigers have blown out teams 17 times vs. 11 times for their opponent at a 172-128 run differential. Tampa Bay has the best record in the AL, but are 12-10 in one-run games and just 16-17 in blowouts. That gives the Rays the best luck factor of the season right now. The Tigers should have a better record than the Rays based on the luck factor. But anyone suggesting the Tigers are better than the Rays in 2026. They actually have the better phyth W-L record. But, sorry, there does come a time where actual results matter. In reality, the Tigers produce as a bottom third AL team. That's what matters. The Rays - why they have the best record in the AL. That's what matters. If you have a stat like that and can't make it work for you, are you really that good? Quote
DTroppens Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Skubal needs to be traded. If the Tigers can make the playoffs still without him, that's awesome. But you can't let this guy just go and maybe you get a supplemental first-round draft pick or one worse than that depending on today's stories where the Tigers' payroll is at. They aren't winning games that he pitches the squad to a 7-0 lead anyway. Try to get some value. The Tigers better be on the phone the rest of the week and all weekend long. If that is trolling, it's a troll. In the past when I was more prevalent on the MB I don't think I was looked as a troll. But, for this situation, this is what needs to be done. If the right deal is done (and of course that's an if) it may pay off big time for this team. Even if they make the playoffs, is there any chance they can survive their own pen? People, a week from now no matter how good the Tigers play, they will still be below .500. Yes, the AL is bad, but how long do you think you can be below .500 before it's legit to say "Let's look toward our future." And saying that is trolling? Quote

There is only a small percentage of relievers who are consistently good fom year to year and with bullpens now pitching a third of the game and often more, that is putting a lot of randomness into the game. Throw in the ridiculous number of injuries to pitchers now and that just adds to the randomnness. How do you build a good bullpen? The Tigers bullpen in the early years of Hinch was a bunch of no names, much of it plucked off the waiver wire and they did fine. Hinch and Fetter looked liked geniuses. Now, it looks like they know nothing. 1 Quote

Now, it looks like they know nothing. I agree with this about the bullpens. Very few arms remain consistent year in and year out. I sometimes wonder if what the Tigers did two years ago with bullpen chaos, except in a more extended version is the way of the future. Bullpen arms don't necessarily know when they will pitch or not. I think maybe routine is a key to this. Starting pitchers have a routine before starts and know what they are expected to accomplish when they pitch. They are supposed to pitch extended innings, even if that may just be 4+ or five innings. Maybe teams need to have legitimate "second starters" for every game. They go through a lot of the same routines as the starter, but now they go let's say three innings, or are at least expected to go three innings. I would guess this routine of working your arm would matter, especially when pitchers are being forced to throw every pitch at 100% as though their lives depend upon it. Having a handful of days in between "starts" and building back to that expectation over a course of days can be better? Maybe? One day it may be three different "starters" with each going three innings. Maybe they pitch every fourth game. That's 12 pitchers and maybe a floater (or two) that may still deal with typical bullpen duties as we see them today. Quote

They had some success early on, but I kind of question that now. Was it luck or skill? Quote
