50 Years Ago Today I started to love baseball
Motor City Sonics replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
June 28th is the 50th anniversary of that Yankee Monday Night game. The whole game is on You Tube (I think they cut the commercials out, though). I am going to re-watch the entire thing. That was wild. Nobody left until he took that curtain call and he was totally freaked out by it. I don't think he understood what he really meant. You have to remember, the year before that Kaline retired, the team was 57-102. Three game short of a full season because they were so bad they didn't need to make up rain outs? They lost 19 in a row that year. And then BOOM. Here comes Fidrych, LeFlore and Staub and they had a winning record again. The rest of that team in 1976 wasn't very good. Aging Bill Freehan, Mickey Stanley and Willie Horton. Tom Veryer and Pedro Garcia up the middle. Yuck. Starting rotation was The Bird, Dave roberts, Vern Ruhle and Ray Bare (with Joe Coleman getting traded). They had a losing record but it's hard to remember it like that because Fidrych made it so exciting. I still remember one of his commercials, sort of. It might have been for Highland Appliance, were he's on the mound telling the ball about all the great deals, then he throws the pitch, you hear a loud knock and Fidrych watches the ball sail away and says "Hey, Ball, where ya goin?" - then the announcer says "that balls headed to Highland Appliance" - or whatever it was. Here's part of a commercial clip, for something else, who knows what -

Don'cha feel like, maybe other than Barry Zito, the innocence of the game kind of died out with Fidrych and Fernando Valenzuela? They were too young and naive to be cynical. They just went out and played with no pretense. Barry Zito was a bit of a weirdo, but I'm not sure how genuine that was, even though it was entertaining. -
Listening to Holmes on NFL radio, he said this was their best UDFA haul since he's been here.

Wallace and Ausar share a lot of characteristics..they both have 7ft+ wingspans, they both had superior quickness and hops and most importantly, they both have tremendous defensive instincts. Duren has long arms as well...he has a lot of bend too so when he decides to drive to the hoop, he's handling the ball down by his ankles..that is tough to deal with -
Vest and Brieske both pitched for the Hens last night - as far was we know neither had their arm fall off.

Riley's such an odd bird, and bird is what come to mind because he just doesn't move like a typical athlete - you can't even say if it's necessarily an asset or a deficit but there is nothing typical about his kinesiology. But whatever, it's really nice to see him hitting more like the promise of 2024. -

Obviously it's only 13 games, but Cade is now shooting 43% from three on 7.3 attempts per game. Not bad for a guy who's best season from three is 35% and in 6 playoff games last year shot 17% from three. -
I saw "Fluharty 5.40 ERA" and though "****, didn't he just pitch?"

When is enough enough in regards to uniforms?

I’m fine with this version or the current version of road jersey, But I’ve always wondered about a road jersey mimicking the home jersey, just with grays rather than ice cream whites. Maybe a hint of orange to go with the navy. And the only thing to add is they when they synced up the hat and shirt D for the home kits, they picked the wrong D. The curved upper right D is superior to the angled upper right D. -

Wallace was amazing to watch because of his lack of height. He shouldn’t have been doing what he was doing because of his height. But he had the quick leaping ability and the strength. You could tell he understood angles and positioning. And that motor was constantly running, there wasn’t much quit in him at all. I think that last part was just who he was given the path he had to take to get to the NBA. Thompson is an athlete that we’re seeing develop into an other worldly defensive beast. Oh, sure, he’s a basketball player, he had those chops coming into this league. But he’s really blossomed this season. His length and his quickness and pure athleticism (I really appreciate the ballet story). He’s reading passing lanes when off ball and is just an absolute pain in the ass on the ball. He’s taken a leap as a shot blocker, pun intended. Can you imagine what his defense will be like with more experience? And what if/when he adds some offensive tools? I think Thompson has a chance to be a better defender than Wallace, although we’re talking different eras and different positions. Heck, since we’re talking the Going to Work crew, is it fair to say Thompson is a combination of Wallace and Prince, but with a better skill set albeit not the strength? -

Cleveland sports writers think ausar should have been thrown out of the game for having the temerity to run through a moving pick. go read it and laugh. -

Yeah, not sure why he’s fallen out of the rotation. It seems like even if that’s been the case, he deserves some sort of minutes given what he can bring as far as defense and energy. I know finding offense can be a chore at times for the Pistons. But sometimes you’ve got to see if the defense can lead to some offense. -

A tall task given their hatred of Browns’ ownership past and present. in general though, this season has been a breakout for him defensively. Watching him on that end is an absolute joy. -
I just used GPT to help me get my arms around the process of replacing my house’s electrical panel, not only helping me estimate costs, which it did, but setting expectations as to what kind of equipment I should be getting, understanding specific Chicago code issues, sifting through proposals from three different vendors, developing the follow-up questions to ask, and ultimately deciding on which vendor to choose. I should be clear that at no time did I just “set it and forget it” and then just did what AI told me to do. I used AI as a tool to help me make my decision, not a crutch to relieve me of the responsibly of thinking about it.

This sure gets us talking about the asinine things he says such as “Xi thinks I’m so smart” at which we can laugh and roll our eyes dismissively, instead of the horrifying things he says such as praising Xi for being a “a brilliant guy” because he rules the Chinese people with an “iron fist” which should give us all pause about his ultimate intentions.

You might be right. He’s not too terribly accurate although I think a lot of where he gets dinged on fielding runs is due both to poor positioning (a lot hits to left field that are normally singles become doubles because he’s loping after the ball to get it), or he gives up on the runner taking the extra base. -
