  1. As I've gotten older, I've realized that most elections are like this for me. Depending on which primary ticket I take (because, if we are honest, taking the D ticket is a waste of influence in most elections where I live) I may end up choosing between two candidates I agree with on just about nothing because one is clearly better than the other at least temperamentally. Because whether I love either candidate is beside the point... I'm gonna spend the next four years living with one of them, and I want a say in which one it is. When the Texas State Rep. who was made famous isn't year for putting together the list of books to ban decided to run for DA in my county, it was my duty to go out and vote against him in both the primary and the runoff. Not because I loved his opponents (trust me I dont), but because the alternative did something deserving of being retired (which he was). In other countries you see this as well... in France, where many political parties do not see eye to eye with the current government, what did almost all of them do when they were eliminated and it became a choice between Macron and Le Pen? They put down their swords, sucked it up, and worked to ensure Le Pen did not win. Somewhere along the way, and I remember this from when I first started voting, it was sold as this idealistic thing... but the reality is that it isnt. The experience of living where I live has driven that home... sometimes you have to choose options you do not like. Democracy isn't sunshine and rainbows where there's always a perfect choice on the ballot.

  3. @pfife@Biff Mayhem I picked up this t-shirt in Detroit Tiger navy a couple years ago. Simple, direct, and compliment-inducing (at least among the over-60s!).

  4. They didn't want to do much becausde the Democratic center is not progressive and this is why young people don't vote.

  5. I remember when the Dems had 60 in the senate and still couldn't do stuff. Why am I to assume they're different now? It's basically all the same people still lol

  6. Pelosi got the bill passed in the house. One more Democrat in the house is meaningless in regards to codifying Roe. The bill passed the house with only one Democrat dissenting. Tell me, how does Pelosi get it passed in the senate? Remember, 49 of 50 Democratic senators passed it in the senate including pro-life Democrat Bob Casey. At some pint, you actually have to start blaming the people who overturned Roe such as all the justices appointed by Republicans and confirmed by Republican majorities.

  7. I support overpaying role players on short term deals. It's either that or overpay somebody like Ayton or Bridges on a max deal. It seems like it has been forever since we have not had at least one really bad contract on the books and there is a good chance we have buyer's remorse in 6 months again if we max Ayton or Bridges.

  13. I think I would rather spend a little more money and bring in Bobby Portis than re-sign Bagley. Portis would give us a little extra insurance too if Ivey comes in and struggles with his outside shot or Cade doesn't improve his percentage as much as he should.

  14. I've been thinking about those voters in 2000 who voted for Nader instead of Gore in protest. How's that working out for them? All we needed was about 500 of those votes in Florida to vote for Gore and we wouldn't have a Roberts or Alito. I hope they made whatever point it was they were trying to make by helping Bush to victory.

  17. Gotta mobilize at the state and local level. I know that gerrymandering makes this an uphill battle, but how do the dem's expect to get any state majorities when they punt 40% of seats.

  18. I really have a hard time with crypto being a conversation in a thread on investing…but, be that as it may, from today’s WSJ: Hackers have stolen roughly $100 million in cryptocurrency from a blockchain bridge, technology company Harmony said Thursday. Harmony, which hosts the Horizon bridge that allows users to send crypto between different blockchains, said on Twitter it is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and forensic specialists to identify who is behind the theft. The company said it is working to retrieve stolen funds. “We have also notified exchanges and stopped the Horizon bridge to prevent further transactions,” Harmony said. “The team is all hands on deck as investigations continue.”

  19. DTE paying to name a music venue. Why? I know there are other energy options, but not really. DTE didn't need the publicity. Took the name of Pine Knob away for 20 years for something that wasn't needed and we probably had to pay that expense. Always seemed dumb to me

  20. And for the folks that will be having rallies...................Screaming and Chanting and Marching won't do anything. Voting will, so best not sit these out anymore. And to the angry Bernie voters who just couldn't vote for someone who had a 93% similar voting record as Bernie - this is on you. It's all on you. You fucking assholes.

  21. Everything I've seen has the Pistons winning the draft and getting an A. What a masterclass in GM work by Weaver over the past few days/weeks. That Grant trade turned out to be: A 2022 lotto pick (#13 - Duren) Move up 10 spots in the 2022 second round 2 future 2nd round picks 20M in cap which they haven't even spent yet (Kemba is getting bought out) Here's Weaver: Givony calls it a "Homerun": Sam Vecenie and his livecast partner "love the fit" with Cade and Ivey. I timestamped this on the DET pick but if you back it up a little you get a little more when they talk about the SAC pick: And just for fun, RIP Hamilton's reaction:

  22. Remember when the top Ilitch fired the previous GM? He didn’t hire a guy with a new broom to sweep clean. He just moved everyone else up one slot. Meet the new boss … This ownership has been married to this front office administration for nearly 20 years. Ilitches are very conservative people, and Chris has shown no indication that he’s not that as well, so blowing up the whole thing and starting over, while totally warranted, would be completely out of character for them. But also, within the upper echelons of the front office are established loyalties to Ilitch that would be swept away and would have to be re-established with an entirely new regime from the outside that could come in and muck things up on some corporate level in a way none of us can see from outside the mirrored windows. Loyalty among the officers is crucially important to tycoons. In any event, we must remember: “The rebuild is 100% over”. So firing top front office staff willy-nilly at this moment would project an image of chaos and confusion, and Ilitches certainly have no interest in that. So I would expect, at minimum, that Al lasts into the winter, and that if he does go, he will go in some gentle way that moves him upstairs to a less hands-on but still powerful role, and, as stated earlier, he will likely hand-pick his own successor, one who will lean heavily on Al for organizational guidance. What are the odds he hires a wunderkind who’s far more competent than he? We may get the culture change of increased competence we all long for, but if so, I would guess it would happen very gradually, and over a term of years.

  24. When it’s all said and done, I think we’ll be happier with Meadows instead of Paredes. And I was president of Isaac’s fan club.

  25. I think this is right. Maybe Paredes ends up the better end of the trade. Very well could considering the conditional draft pick, tbh. But I'd rather see how it plays out going forward, at least into next year, before rendering a judgment.

  26. I know it's naive to never say never but I can't imagine that going over well with most people. I think same sex marriage has more broad appeal than abortion rights. But maybe not as intense. The dems need to go scorthed earth 1996 style to portray the GOP as what they are. Quit playing nice. There's nuance to the abortion debate even though I don't think there should be. But there's nothing nuanced about same sex marriage anymore.

  28. Democrats are starting to sound more like Trump. You need to codify Roe. They did vote for it but there isn't enough of them. OMG do more. What more can we do? I don't know, inspire me. It's like when Trump asked Pence to overturn the election and he told him he can't and Trump was just like find a way.

  29. I want Loving overturned next. I am totally against overturning Loving... but I need that slap in the face of Clarence Thomas before he is no longer on the court. I want the uproar across the nation as a backlash against Conservatism, as a result of his poisonous politics, and the consequences thereof. I want that roar to be loud and deafening.

  30. I'm having a hard time. My dog is still alive at almost 17, but I already miss him. I miss what he used to be and I know I can never have that back with him. I KNOW what I need to do, but I can't do it. He's been in the house all day. He's afraid to step off the landing and onto the porch. He's afraid to walk down the grass ramp I built him because he's afraid of falling. It's time, but I just can't do it. I'm overwhelmed with grief but also with guilt because I want to have a dog again, a dog that can do dog things and I just have this deep down feeling that I'm getting rid of him for a selfish need. I won't wait to get another dog, I will start looking immediately because my house is not right without a dog - everything is off balance without a dog here, but I can't do it. I'm so torn on this because he had a really good day yesterday (well, as good as you can have at 90 years old).
