  1. While college has certainly become much more expensive over the years, most kids don't do themselves any favors by choosing to attend much more expensive schools on the other side of the country rather than staying home, attending community college and then transferring to an in state school to finish up their studies.

  5. What if Gomber pitched to Maton? Worst vs worst = positive outcome or would it create a black hole that swallows earth?

  6. JEIII mentioned Harris about a week ago. I figured he was just tossing names against the wall. This move is fine. Harris is a great shooter and at worst, a neutral defender, possibly even leaving to the plus side. Give us a expiring to move at the deadline or cap space next summer. Big free agents are not coming here. Unrestricted free agents are 6 or 7 years too old for this team and unrestricted are overpriced because their team can match. This move was fine.

  7. With the caveat that I may change my tune 24 hours from now if July 1 takes a surprising turn. Yzerman in his 4 years has taken a steady, conservative approach without a sense of urgency. That isn't inherently good or bad. Canadian teams often prematurely rush the process by signing a big name due to fan or media pressure to do something now, do anything. But goodwill Yzerman has built up from his playing days and Tampa tenure and the fact that enough fans have been sated by 4 Cups in 11 years has caused many to take a puffball approach to his record. There is the hope and expectation that he will replicate what he did in Tampa. That was first real executive job. He might repeat it. But any success depends on luck as well, and no guarantee that lightning will strike twice. Exhibit 1: drafting good fortune the Wings had in the late '80s and early '90s versus lack of lottery luck the past 7 years. Many examples of entrepreneurs making a ton of money and fame launching one business but then not hitting paydirt again the rest of the way. Past is only a partial indicator of future. Yzerman has made a bunch of little moves and on balance more than often not they've been small wins. But when I look objectively at all of his drafts and trades and signings so far, I count one and only one move that lives up to the Yzerman hype so far - drafting Seider when almost everyone saw that as a reach. True that likewise he hasn't made any disastrous signings, trades or picks so far but it has been safety first so far. Maybe that's ok, provided the Wings progress bit by bit. But willingly giving up on Vrana, Bertuzzi and Hronek presents the first real challenge of the Yzerman era. Without replacing them this weekend, the WIngs will likely be a worse team in 2023-24 than they were in 2022-2023. I was hoping for better 4 years in. Not that I blame him, there's still no other GM I'd rather have at this point, but we need to catch a break and it has been awhile since the Red Wings have.

  8. Well, that’s an interesting question. Lorenzen has been the only reliable starting pitcher on the matrix of health and results. The offense has stunk, but Candelario would be only 1/9of the lineup. As far as which could fetch more on the trade market, we just might well see that answer in the next month. But I contend that there was room for both salaries on the roster this season to begin with. If there wasn’t, then someone is lying.

  9. We can either buy out his option or... if he is not open to that then make the assumption that he will opt out. Actually, I'm not actually certain we could do that... it just seems logical. I'm not certain what's in the current operating agreement. He may only be keeping his options "open" and might just as well opt in but... if we can't buy out his option then as an Org I would think we have to operate under the assumption that he IS going to opt out and then we would need to put him on the trade market... IMO. I wouldn't mind keeping him either... if we can offer $10 mill (whatever gets him from current annual salary to... happiness...) to buy out his option and he is agreeable to that then... That would be my 1st choice.

  12. I was thinking that, too, that the market might have already priced in sub-3% inflation, but an actual announcement to that effect might draw in the last of the retail holdouts and bring the market up to a new support level.

  13. This reminds me of the past 2 off seasons of the Tigers. Offseason before last the Tigers went out and made some notable signings like Baez and E-Rod. Team flopped so pulled back this offseason and went cheapo. Wings made some signings last summer like Copp and Perron which gave hope of moving forward. Seemed to be going according to plan until a bad couple of games against Ottawa seems to have freaked out the front office. Sold off two of their best half-dozen players and then went cheapo this offseason, at least so far.

  14. Unless Raymond steps up in a big way or some unforeseen rookie comes up and has a huge year, I don't see where the offensive production is going to come from on this team. Do we have more than one or two players next year that are capable of netting more than 25 goals and 50 points? I expect 35 year old David Perron to regress at some point in the very near future. Where is the production coming from, with or without his regression?

  19. I do agree with that. This conversation never seems too nuanced regardless... certainly the tendency to push kids toward college (which was widespread around when I was going through K-12) was misguided, there are good careers in the trades, sometimes better even than ones you can obtain via college. But at the same time, success in this arena shouldn't simply be about pushing kids toward career paths that don't require capital expenditure to further education, it should be about helping kids find a career that align with their strengths as human beings. And I do worry that the increased cost of college education, even at the state level, will further box out kids whose skills do align with, say, engineering or the sciences but who do not necessarily have the means to pay for it all on their own. I just think that gets lost in all of this discussion... ideally you need a mix of kids interested in both trades or higher ed. Not one or the other, which seems to be how a lot of politicians who demagogue against higher ed (who ironically all have Ivy League degrees; think Josh Hawley or JD Vance) seem to argue these days

  20. Thank you for saying so well what I didn't take the time to say in my frustration. All of this. The assumption that just because Yzerman built the pieces for Cup wins( but they didn't win until after he left), the conservative approach, the puzzling moves. I'd also add staying with Blashill too long. I'd disagree though that the Wings were just lucky in the 80's and 90's with their draft picks or that it was other teams lacking. They had an owner and management who were obsessed with winning and rolled the dice. We can look back now and say it's so obvious, but it wasn't really then. Obviously, no one wants a quick fix and multiple old, cap busting free agents. But yes, I believe the rebuild should be farther along by now and I think you can get into the playoffs without sacrificing long term success. We hear endlessly about culture. Eventually going year after year of not making the playoffs is going to take a toll on players and fans.

  21. No matter how much he rakes at Toledo, don't be surprised in Keith is held down until he can maintain rookie eligibility. Unless the Tigers somehow find themselves in contention before then, that is. Reminder, he will need to be under 45 days of active (i.e. non-IL) service time and under 130 at-bats at season's end to be eligible for prospect lists and thus be able to net the Tigers a draft pick if he gets any award voting early on in his career. We are talking late August at the earliest. Patience...

  24. I think there's a market for Bogdanovich given his offense. I'm not going to argue with you that he might be overrated and Burks might be underrated to the point where they are more equal in talent than some would think. But the market might not necessarily value these talents correctly, either. It just takes a GM/owner to think they need more offense to create interest in Bogdanovich. There's always a bit of an illusion to some folks about how good the best player on a crappy team is. And part of that illusion could be overlooking the defense for the offense, particularly if a team thinks it already has pretty good defense and rebounding already. And with Cunningham's return, and with Ivey having a season under his belt, reliance on Bogdanovich by the Piston should decrease. So that illusion is going to fade just a bit, too. So, there's probably a bit of motivation by the Pistons to make a move, particularly with Harris on the team for a season. I wouldn't expect Miami to be a trade target. I think they tend to operate differently than the rest of the league and are quite successful with that approach. Bogdanovich probably doesn't match their DNA. But, there are 28 other teams to kick trade ideas around with. Less than that if you filter in cap space, philosophy, needs/strengths, etc. But does that 28 reduce down to 0? I doubt it. So as long as that number is higher than 0, I think there's a market for Bogdanovich.

  25. Libor Sulak...that's a name I haven't thought of in awhile. Kenny steered this thing into the rocks. I don't think SY is interested in an approach that gets us a 7th or 8th seed in the playoffs...just making the playoffs isn't the goal. Building a roster and leaving space to take a swing at adding the final touches when you're ready too contend is.

  26. $43m for FVV!!!! I was dismayed at the Harris trade at first and still think the Pistons should have squeezed more value out of that contract but it's a good day for the Pistons because they didn't tie themselves to any ridiculous contract for players that aren't high impact guys.

  27. I wonder if this isn't a result Biden is happy to live with. He gets the props from the progressive wing, doesn't have to live with the results, which could be questionable. And he can further energize young voters on Supreme Court oppostion.

  31. Very true, but in the aggregate if one team in need of a 3B is put over the tax by Candelario, his value decreases because of his salary, even if the penalty is small. That is the point I wanted to make.

  32. I am impressed that you know how all that stuff works and I am sure there are lots of stuff teams do that I don't think about. However, there is a large variation among teams in budgets and how they approach contracts. Teams with larger budgets still have to be careful, but they have a lot more freedom. The Yankees and Dodgers are going to worry less about adding a 7 million salary than the Rays and Athletics. Last year, the Rangers went nuts signing everybody. A couple of years ago, it was the Padres. I am not suggesting the Tigers do something similar, but making the point that teams operately differently.

  34. I was thinking about the poor or working class white kids that get the shaft because of AA. It sucks. It truly does. But does it suck as much as slavery? Does it suck as much as Jim Crow laws that were in effect in my lifetime? If they want to blame someone, maybe ask some of their grandparents why they let this happen as long as they did. I don't know, I think we owe a hell of a lot more than an easier path to college. Historically in this country what White people have done to Black people is a crime against humanity itself. AA is the least we can do. And really the actual least.

  35. They have a pretty low budget—I would be majorly bummed if that decision was driven by money. They could have easily afforded both Lorenzen and Candelario, if they wanted to.

  38. The SO and I go around about it once every couple of years. I'm a Chem E by training, and she's a Microbiologist so no newbie to chemistry wise either - I won't let her have a service put 2,4D on our lawn and she gets frustrated with me over it. You really need a better reason than dandelions to spread halogenated hydrocarbons around your environment willy-nilly.

  39. It was a lot easier when there was no salary cap and other team's scouting deficiencies let you get guys like Lidstrom and Fedorov in the third and fourth rounds in the same draft. Then you have the contracts and everything Yzerman started with: Top 10 prospects from Bultmans end of 2018 ranking. Libor Sulak Joe Hicketts Vili Saarijarvi Gustav Lindstrom Evengy Svechnikov Jared McIssac Berggren Hronek Veleno Zadina More bad contracts than good, really no great prospects to speak of. I'm not sure that Seattle and Vegas are comparable since their gm's were able to completely decide what they wanted their team to be with very favorable protection rules, whereas Yzerman got what he was given. Seattle was even given the second overall pick to get Berniers as a cornerstone of their franchise, what has Yzerman had to work with? I myself am getting impatient but outside of some other GM being a miracle worker and getting really really lucky with trades and prospects I am not shocked that it is taking this long. I do scratch my head at some Yzerman moves but I am more than fine giving him more time to cook here.

  40. I care about him not so much because the Tigers "lost him", but because I followed his career as a Tiger closely for several years and I am naturally curious with his progression.
