Great article on Jatnk Diaz. Gonna be rooting for him. https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/jeff-seidel/2023/07/16/detroit-tigers-draft-pick-jatnk-diaz-self-taught-pitcher-prospect-surprise/70414130007/4 points

I believe it's hard to excel at multiple positions in the same season. It's nice to have positional versatility, but there may be such a thing as overusing it.3 points

The Tigers knew exactly the amount needed to sign him, the minute they picked him.3 points

I'm ok with a loss after taking the series, but Harvy has to go, it's untenable having his "bat" in the lineup if this team actually wants to contend for winning things going forward...that last at bat should get him benched. Hell, if Maton did that ****, he'd be back in Toledo tomorrow.2 points

The TV boys ate chili flavored grasshoppers on camera today. I’m grilling queso brats with some corn on the cob later today. Advantage, Casimir.2 points

Hinch has a real bug up his rear about Maton at 3B. Makes no sense at all. There are at least 3 better 3B on the roster. If you want to play him, fine. Put his asz at 2B. Not to mention that if wants numbers, Maton's OPS at 2B is 756. It's 580 at 3B.2 points

I’d much rather Short play 3rd and Maton play 2nd. I guess Hinch wants to see what changes happened in a couple of weeks at Toledo?2 points

It would be a really weak division title and even if they somehow managed to win the World Series, that's not the way I want it to happen. When they win it all some day, I want it to be with a great memorable team.1 point

Might need to have a goalie pitch to test this theory out. Don't roll your eyes at me. It ain't the dumbest idea. They're shooting pucks in the dugout this season.1 point

He'll pull an Yzerman. Wait for us to lose a couple of games and then just claim we're not serious contenders. Which we aren't. But make the playoffs and anything can happen.1 point

Baez couldn't have hit those last two he swung at wit a phone pole...Victor Wembanyama couldn't have reached them. Javy needs to sit for a spell. Make him miserable enough to opt out1 point

Yeah the bottom of the zone has been getting calls. That last one to Baddoo was egregious.1 point
-
I'd like to see the umpire bias report on this game - that wasn't the 1st call that went the M's way. The zone has been generally huge, which is part of why the score is low, but I don't think it's been very uniformly huge.1 point

Strike one called on a 3-0 vs Badoo was easily 6 inches below the zone, #robotumps1 point

They have had success with Lorenzen so now trade him. In the offseason they can find the next Lorenzen because players will see the success story and want their chance.1 point

Guys like Anderson, who would have projected lower under other circumstances, dont have the leverage in that situation either to demand slot. There's a good chance he makes more even going underslot than he would made otherwise. Which is why teams do it lol1 point

That 95+ mph pitch that Brieske was throwing low in the zone and ran in on RH was just about unhittable1 point

That's some nice power from Malloy in 83 games. His previous career high, at lower levels, is 17 for a full season. He's playing like a guy who hits 25 homers and draws 100 walks. I've noticed him for a few outfield assists lately, I know that sometimes those can be like hockey assists, but a LF who throws a runner out at second probably made a good play. And, he's 23.1 point

they haven't won (or lost) more than two in a row since the 9 game swoon. Time for that to end.1 point

Look around—other can’t-miss guys have struggled, too. Joey Bart, CJ Abrams, Jerred Kellenic, Alex Kirilloff, JJ Bleday, Nick Madrigal—none has lived up to their hype (yet). Heck, Austin Martin, who was heavily debated as a potential alternative to drafting Tork, has yet to make the majors.1 point

I’m glad you guys have such vivid memories of that game. I was 15 and missed it because I had better things to do - watching the submarine races under the Bluewater Bridge with my the captain of my high school’s cheerleading team and her older sister who was home from college for the weekend.1 point

Torkelson's last ~250 AB his OPS is 770, pacing for 30 HR and 90 RBI per season. His OBP still needs to come up - it's about 330 for that stretch, but considering he is just now reaching one full season's worth of experience in the majors (~700PA) he's doing fine. Tork has two problems in terms of fan perception - he's not going to hit for as high average as Riley, and he had a terrible April which keeps his season stats depressed.1 point

Those are all refreshing takes. It's topics like that which made my previous studies of presidents so fascinating. The different styles. JFK wanted to be in on every decision and every staffer to report to him.. Bush 41 wouldn't hesitate to pick up the phone and call some random person 4 levels down in a cabinet department who wouldn't believe it was the President calling them. He wanted the information straight from the source. He knew the inner workings of government from his lifetime of service. Clinton would read everything he could like a college student. Obama treated it like online discourse. Lots of snark. His staff grew up on The West Wing. Reagan wanted high level. Hear all the sides, ask some questions, then make the decision.1 point
