  1. Speaking of space... yesterday was the anniversary of Apollo 12's launch. For space junkies it calls back to two famous phrases that's become legend "Try SCE to AUX", and "Steely eyed missle man" This write up explains it: On this day in history, on November 14, 1969, Apollo 12 successfully launched to the Moon. But it wasn’t without a little drama. The weather that day at Cape Canaveral in Florida was overcast with light rain and winds. However, at 11:22 am EST, the spacecraft, carrying astronauts Pete Conrad, Richard Gordon, and Alan Bean, blasted off into the clouds, in a seemingly perfect launch. But thirty-seven seconds into launch, all hell broke loose. "What the hell was that?" asked Gordon. Twenty seconds of confusion ensued, and then another disturbance occurred. "Okay, we just lost the platform gang," reported Conrad, "I don't know what happened here. We had everything in the world drop out." The crew and Mission Control didn't know what had happed, and only later determined the Saturn V rocket had been struck by lighting - twice. Were it not for flight controller John Aaron, the mission might have been aborted. Aaron may be remembered more for being instrumental in helping to save Apollo 13, but the part he played in Apollo 12 was just as crucial. When he saw the unusual telemetry readings from Apollo 12. he remembered a flight simulation that took place about a year earlier. He recalled this simulated anomaly concerned an obscure system called Signal Conditioning Equipment (SCE), and remembered normal reading were restored by putting the SCE on its auxiliary setting, which meant that it would run even under low-voltage conditions. So when he quickly called out the recommendation, "Flight, try SCE to "AUX'", most of his mission control colleagues had no idea what he was talking about. Both the flight director and the CapCom asked him to repeat the recommendation. Conrad was unfamiliar with the control but fortunately Alan Bean was familiar with the location of the SCE switch inside the capsule, and flipped it to auxiliary. Telemetry was immediately restored, allowing the mission to continue. This was just one instance that earned Aaron the compliment of being called a "steely-eyed missile man." the absolute highest of NASA compliments. And even today the phrase "SCE to AUX" used to describe a situation where one narrowly averts a catastrophe by coming up with an ingenious plan. (credit - Universe Today, Nancy Atkinson)

  2. I mean I didn't think the O line looked bad before but I just didnt feel they looked as dominant as some of the metrics and people would say about them.... until last week. To me that was a truly dominant performance in all aspects up front and if they are going to play like that now that they are all healthy then this offense is going to be hard to stop despite the boat anchor Ben Johnson at offensive coordinator.

  3. 😄 😄 Want to know how to spot the old geezers on this forum? Look for double-spacing between sentences. It's an old carryover from the manual typewriter days. Everyone was taught to double space back then to offset the problem of monospaced typesetting. It has nothing to do with punctuation (single-spacing has always been correct). Word processors eliminated the need for double-spacing decades ago. After around 1990, any typing class still teaching to double-space after a sentence was way behind the times. And sorry all you curmudgeons, but don't even go there with me. I use to run a tech publishing department. I get this all the time. Single-spacing is correct, double-spacing is NOT, and hasn’t been since forever. Print, web... you name it, every professional publication out there correctly single-spaces between sentences. And it’s been that way for years and years. If you don’t believe me, go look for yourself. Even Microsoft Word’s spell check flags double-spacing as an error

  5. Strange move. The clock seemed to be a success. Let's mess around with it!

  6. I think Harbaugh thinks a lot of himself and wants to feel wanted. If anything, this latest scandal and Santa Ono standing behind him will push him to stay in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future.

  7. He needs a suspension. But he also needs his ass beat once or twice. At some point a player needs to take it upon himself to police Green a bit.

  8. 8 first round picks. He has drafted in the 1st round a starting 5 and 3 bench players. They still can't win 30 games. That is not collecting talent. You need a star or stars to win a title in this league. You don't need one to win 30 games. 8 FRPs should be plenty to do that.

  10. I think Stavenhagen said something along the lines of, of the 25 guys who vote for Tiger of th year, maybe five of them cover the team every day? I can’t remember who Stavenhagen said he voted for, but he seems weirdly sore about the whole thing. I’m not real invested in Tiger of the Year, but it’s not really anything like MVP, is it? I always thought of it as steady player who might or might not be the best player on the team, but who writers think embodies being the most important cog on the team, or perhaps in the clubhouse, for either now or the future. I don’t think of it as being a ratification of the WAR champ. In that way, as a linchpin of the future who posted up 159 times, day in and day out, this year, and who actually improved substantially the second half, Tork is as good a choice as anyone else. I think of TOY as a kind of squishy award, anyway.

  11. So the Raiders had this Airing Of Grievances meeting with Josh McDaniels where the players absolutely laid into him and Josh sat their silently. Then LB Coach Antonio Pierce spoke up to defend McDaniels and told them that they had to build their own thing, their own identity and that needs to start now and then he said that nobody thought his Giants team could beat the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl, but the Giants internally believed they could beat anyone on any given Sunday and that the Raiders needed to find that mentality. Apparently after that meeting McDaniels went ballistic on Pierce for talking about beating the Patriots team he was part of in a "don't ever talk about the Patriots like that" and that was the moment where Mark Davis said "I've seen enough" Then Josh McDaniels calls his kids home from Trick Or Treating to tell them he was fired. Couldn't wait? And by the way, "Daddy got fired" still means Daddy is getting millions. That is one weird guy. McDaniels and Patricia are two sides of the same coin and players HATE them. I just want to say, that I am right about things maybe about 7 or 8 times a year and that's about it. When the Raiders hired McDaniels, on the old board, I said it would be a disaster. The league will be so much better off when all these Belichick errand boys are out of it. Guess Bill O'Brien will probably get another shot, for some reason, and that could be the end of it.

  13. Yes, claiming Campos seems like roster suicide. He'll be 21, with a High A OPS of .708. Nobody will give him a roster spot for the entire 2024 season.

  14. Playing with players good enough that he couldn't be triple teamed there? Even if you believe he is better than the TO's bricked shots and inability to get the foul line argue right now, there is no way for Cade to star in the role of one on 5 basketball!

  16. zach lavine is a great athletic talent, one of the most explosive offensive players in the nba. and a loser. he's a losing player. he doesnt make anyone else better. he doesnt pass. he doesnt play defense. he is bad in clutch situations but goes one on five anyway down the stretch. he's empty calories. he's a more likeable james harden. that team with him and derozan is unwatchable. a series of one on one plays with no movement and then doing nothing on d. they'll win 38-40 games because those guys are great scorers, but when the other team wants to win, they'll usually beat the bulls. the bulls are easy to beat in the playoffs: double derozan and let lavine shoot them out of the game. lavine as bench scorer? good. lavine as third man on the lakers? good, cause lebron will keep lavine's ego in check. lavine on the sixers with maxey and embiid? hmmmm....only if maxey develops into a true #1, but i can see morey betting on the talent (just like his fascination with harden).

  23. that is the key with Torkelson. After disastrous April, he righted the ship and his 2nd half OPS+ would have been closer to 120. He might not have been their best player over the season but he may have been over the 2nd half, which is what is promising going forward.
