Integrity is long gone. The most famous sportswriter in our town flat-out lied about being somewhere and even used quotes from people he didn't speak to - and he's still working. 30 years ago he'd be finished. It's all because News used to be considered a necessary financial loss for TV networks. Then the execs started designing it to make a profit, so integrity went out the window for ad dollars. Watch BBC news when you get a chance (online). Very little hyperbole - just very dry, straight reporting (most of the time). That's how it used to be here. Now its about stoking anger and fear to drive up ratings. That trickles down to sports and even weather, so it's about getting attention first. We'll apologize in the 25th minute in the newscast if we got it wrong. Hey, sensationalizing the weather for profit can be extremely dangerous. People start ignoring the warnings. here in Michigan if we are expecting 4-6 inches of snow it's wall-to-wall coverage, BREAKING NEWS. 4-6 inches of snow.....around here? half the people driving SUVs? Not really a story. Then when a REAL dangerous storm hits people ignore it as just another and get caught off-guard. Big part of what happened with Katrina in NOLA. It's only about ratings and clicks now. News was never supposed to be that. I know someone who was fired as a news director because he refused to use BREAKING NEWS every single day. He through it should be for major events only. The final straw was when he refused to use it to cover a heated schoolboard meeting.3 points

JEIII today: "It would be irresponsible not to mention that the Magic did have a kick-start to their rebuild. Trading Nikola Vucevic to the Bulls in 2021 allowed Orlando to land solid young big man Wendell Carter Jr. and two first-round picks, one of which became top-10 pick Franz Wagner, who has been one of the organization’s pillars alongside Paolo Banchero. You need as many bites of the apple as you can get when rebuilding, and Orlando made good use of its extra opportunity. When the Pistons began their rebuild, their three “franchise” players — Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson — brought Detroit nothing but expiring contracts, second-round picks and dead money. The Pistons started their rebuild from zero. Even with the lack of assets and extra lottery picks at their disposal, the Pistons losing by 30-plus points to the Magic, a year after they were in the same boat, for their 19th straight defeat signals something deeper. Detroit is beyond being in a funk. This almost feels permanent. Too much losing in a short amount of time does no one any good. With that said, I’m sure Magic fans felt the same way when their team was 5-20 amid a 9-game losing skid this time last season. Things can change, I guess. Anything is possible." the way he carries water for troy weaver is amazing. the pistons have had MORE first round picks than the magic during this "rebuild." and after carrying water for saddiq bey for three years he never mentions that the wiseman trade just might be a mistake. i mean, come on. if youre a beat writer who is just there to provide a game report and a quote after the game, cool. but if youre supposed to be a commentary guy too, at least provide some meaningful criticism of the team and not this ass kissing bull****. the narrative has gone from injuries back to "the cupboard was bare when he got here." anything to keep from actually saying weaver has failed to do his job in the most spectacular way possible. all the blogs and publications that dont need access have said it, all the beat writers who are around the team every day refuse to. and they wonder why fans dont read newspapers anymore.3 points

I’ll bet Maeda K’s more hitters than Ohtani does next season.2 points

Ivey without Monty > Ivey with Monty In fact, you can say that about a lot of Pistons. The roster is obviously a big issue but Monty has sucked all the life out of it. At least they were competing under Casey, I have no idea what this is that we're witnessing. On another note, Popovich is the Belichick of the NBA. Road the coattails of Duncan/Brady to coaching immortality. Good coaches but propped up big time by all time great players.2 points

I have been slowly grinding my way through this Ian Toll book about the War in the Pacific (Twilight of the Gods). I mentioned it before. So, another religious reference which might be amusing to all. The Kamikaze attacks on the US task forces covering the landings on Okinawa were incredibly persistent and deadly. They had been almost a constant state of danger for the naval forces since Mid-March and by mid May 1945 everyone was at their physical, emotional and psychological limits. Toll, describes exactly how fatigued and stressed the crews of aircraft and AA batteries were by the second month of this. Apparently Admiral Jocko Clark of TF 58.1 was so weary of the strain on the air crew that he sent this out to the crews of his TF "see Hebrews chapter 13, verse 8" I snorted when I read that. Good profane use of language to describe the situation.1 point

You have to understand that he's got people breathing down his neck CONSTANTLY about getting clicks. I mean, it's a non-stop battle for writers now and so they have to try to draw attention to themselves all the time, so they risk their credibility for clicks, because they have to.1 point

I can't really find anything about him lowering prices or even losing money on it. But he did pay a massive price socially. What a joke. https://truthout.org/articles/private-equity-is-using-prison-phone-food-and-health-systems-to-rack-up-profits/1 point

I was an atheist by the age of 11. My mom forced me to get Confirmed (Catholic) at the age of 13. But I don't hold any grudges. She was just tougher than I am (she's tougher than most). But I was shy and introverted at that age, so: Atheist by 11. Agnostic before then (who knows anything before that age...?). I guess I was also a "Catholic-in-training" before that age.... but obviously the training didn't take. And Confirmed Roman Catholic. That's all on my "resume". It didn't change anything. And like I said... no grudges. It went in one ear... and right back out the other anyways. Hope that doesn't offend anyone...1 point

Guess someone needs to wear a wire and bait Gores into saying something racist so the league kicks him out.1 point
-
Gores really is at the root of this. I don’t know how a fan base gets rid of an owner but everything about him screams losing organization.1 point

I don’t know who was clamoring for Livers but he has never been good. The other guys at least belong on an nba roster but somehow look like they don’t with Monty coaching them. We are bad but I think being historically bad falls on the coach.1 point

Saw the footage of Shane's funeral today. Nick Cave with a beautiful version of A Rainy Night In Soho. Nick Cave could sing the alphabet song and make it moving, but then when they closed with Glen Hansard and friends playing Fairytale Of NY - Shane's family got up and danced in the aisle...........it was a perfect ending. My allergies may have flared up at that moment. Yeah, yeah, it was allergies.1 point

matt millen has a better winning % than troy weaver. isiah thomas has a better winning % as an executive than troy weaver. and he took over an expansion team. and the knicks! elgin baylor has a better winning % than troy weaver. and finally....**** vitale has a better winning % than troy weaver. troy is the worst general manager we've ever seen. and we've seen late stage joe dumars (who also had a better winning % than troy weaver).0 points
