Drafting one player you've never seen play over another play you've never seen play3 points

Arb clock is based on service time, so it only counts days in the majors. Let's game this out and say the Tigers promoted Jackson Jobe in 2021, but sent him down after one start. He only gets one day of service time, but if he was injured in Spring Training in 2022 before he is sent down, he would need to go on the Major League IL because he spent time on the active roster. I don't think he was, so he spends the whole year burning Option 2. Ditto 2023 and 2024 (he would be eligible for a fourth option). So in summary, he would be out of options now but wouldn't have much more service time. The spring training option/injury restriction is a service risk, especially for a pitcher, but only applies if they spent any time the previous year in the Bigs. (That is why Ty Madden is on the 60 day IL but Mattison was optioned). There is also the salary component. 40 man players who have been in the majors are guaranteed at least $125K (that number goes up every year and I don't remember the exact number). That is much higher than the minimums at each level on the way up. And when I talk about tying up a 40 man spot, remember this when the Tigers are pulling their hair out over who to DFA toward the end of the off-season. Mason Englert would come in handy right now, wouldn't he? If Jobe was pre-emptively added, maybe they don't have room to claim Tyler Holton, or they drop somebody else on the back end before they can come up.2 points

As a side note, I'm really digging this no more ****s to give version of Gavin Newsom.2 points

I think it's OK to deport people, especially violent criminals after, due process. I am against indiscriminate mass deportation. I am against ICE raids of farms, stores, hospitals, etc just so they can reach some quota and pump up the MAGA base. Of course, there needs to be immigration laws - laws which make it easier for productive immigrants to come here and stay here and laws to keep the bad ones out. However, I am very sure that the current immigration policy is totally fueled by racism and fear and that is totally counterproductive.2 points

Right, I don't get why people are triggered by it. Harris is way better, but that doesn't mean Avila didn't contribute something to this team.2 points

I hope Avila takes some pride in that. He deserves it. Two things can be true at the same time. He did help build a foundation in terms of systems and people but someone else had to take it to the next level. No shame in that. Half of the experts on Tigers Twitter wanted Harris fired 11 months ago so F them too.2 points

I’ve never liked the NL and AL jerseys. This seems a lot better.1 point

I just now changed the name of this thread to the actual All-Star game thread for the sake of convenience.1 point

the idea of cossa as untouchable is crazy to me. i'm good if they trade him, i'm good if they DONT trade him too. but i'm not as high on him as some of you seem to be because he's a goalie and those guys are volatile and can take a long time to get good. i'm good with them trading any prospect if it brings back a good player that fits their timeline.1 point

Seeing the celebrities was cool. I saw the "hot guy" from Desperate Housewives as my wife called him. He was in the celebrity softball game, I went to that with her and made fun of him, saying he probably can't play. THen he hit a "softball" HR. Then on another night I saw him at the bottom of the ramp from the 300 level smoking, that was where they let people smoke. I also saw Richard Schiff, Toby from the West Wing. He smiled when I said Hi. Also saw George Will when we were leaving the stadium.1 point

I haven't even commented on all of the cases in this thread-and those represent a tiny minority of the people being deported. And in general.... yes. The current situation is more than a little concerning. Whether you think the US should allow as much immigration as it has, or if you think those currently in the country without documentation need to be deported-they're all human beings and should be treated as such. And yes, I do think that many of those who are here, especially those brought here as children who don't even remember their country of birth, have the right to apply for asylum and/or the right to work here. Some of them won't and should not be approved-but my guess is that these aren't the ones being found in raids. And of course your question leads me to ask you: is there any deportation that you think is unjust? How much power should ICE have-and is there ever going to be a line crossed that causes you to think it's too much?1 point

Start twisting the laws to fit what their agenda is and they will just keep pushing. Maybe the next law applies to someone you care about. Trump's DOJ treats Bryan Kohberger better than illegal immigrants.1 point

This is my POV. I want higher leverage pitchers for higher leverage playoff and WS innings. If we can get that far. I have no idea how cheaply we can get them or even if we can... They're not going to be cheap, but at a price that Harris feels he can work with...1 point

I was looking your answers in which you suggested that any of us who dared to criticize actions of ICE obviously want no laws and open borders, and using the same type of reasoning to suggest that you think that ICE is always justified in removing people no matter what and no matter how. Got it?1 point

Avila bought some of the materials. He simply had no idea how to build the house.1 point

The team was going nowhere with Avila and the question seemed to be - could he not judge talent or could he not develop it or both? I think we have the answer. He was a good talent evaluator that did not have a good handle on development. Harris came in and fixed that immediately and now we see that Avila was better than we thought. I think the current Tiger system is modeled after the Tampa system, and Tampa always develops good enough talent to basically contend every 3 out of 4 years. The difference here is - where Tampa trades away any player about to get into serious contracts, the Tigers probably can't get away with that as much. The Tampa fanbase doesn't have that ache for baseball that the Detroit fanbase does - and trading away your stars as they become starts would infuriate the fanbase here. If this was the Rays, Riley Greene would be gone, probably this year, even if the team was contending. The Tigers and Lions seem to be on a run of picking and developing good players - the kind of thing that if you stay this good, or even close to it, you should always have a shot at the playoffs. The way Brad Holmes is going with the Lions, a 9-8 season is going to seem like a failure. Imagine saying that just 4 years ago. The way things are clicking into place for the Tigers, and with the talent they have in the minors, losing a Tarik Skubal might not be as bad as some believe. I don't think the Tigers will be able to keep him. I think Steve Cohen's gonna offer him 60 million a year, especially if the Mets haven't won a series by then. Even if Skubal loves it here, he's not turning that down.1 point

My favorite 2005 All Star memory was what didn’t happen. I went with my wife to the media party at Comerica. It was the last year she managed the team’s radio network. As we were leaving, she headed to the rest room while I took a seat on a nearby bench. This little old guy sat across from me and I kept thinking he looked familiar. Right after he left, it dawned on me, Earl Weaver. Maybe it was good I didn’t interact because I would have definitely brought up the 1971 and 1979 World Series. Back when I was a big Pirate fan1 point

Avila deserves a ton of credit. Took him too long with the rebuild, but the current core came on his watch.1 point

That, and Earl Weaver's Manager's Corner. I can't even look at a tomato plant without thinking of poor Alice Sweet.1 point
