  6. I think this is true, but not because of the way she was nominated per se, but because she didn't have the benefit all the things she would have learned and the support she would have developed as a candidate running a primary campaign. And of course you never know, a stronger candidate might have emerged, defeated her and then been stronger against Trump. The reason the parties started doing primaries was to make sure the people they nominated actually had voter appeal. Of course the primary process today is pretty screwed up in term of the ability to actually do that, but it was the theory. For the Dems the die was cast in 2019/2020 when Biden picked a candidate for VP who had not been a very successful campaigner and then compounded it by never setting her up as a virtual co-president so she could easily succeed him after one term.

  13. I guess they were absolutely surprised at how cheap it was to get the rights to those two songs. And the whole idea of how to use an album side (I won't spoil) it was unique. To have an uptempo song at the start and a very emotional closer at the end. They went through a bunch of albums and there were only 2 or 3 and Purple Rain was choice #1 (doesn't hurt that the first time they saw El was in the rain). It just all came together. I think labels/managers recognize the power of that show and how it can increase streams. I don't know how much money that's worth (I know Prince has a higher royalty on Spotify than most artists). Kate Bush is alive and was a fan of the show before they asked her so she was alright with it. Hard to tell if Prince was still alive. I think he might have said yes because of how it was used. Every Friday between 5pm an 5:30 I do the Friday Getaway on 107one, where we play uptempo songs for the start of the weekend. This Friday we're doing the Spoiler-Free Stranger Things Friday Getaway, playing a bunch of music from the finale (plus Kate Bush, which was in every other episode). Prince, The Pixies, Lansldie, Sweet Jane, not gonna play The Trooper, however. That one doesn't quite fit our station. I can still only hear out of one ear, but I am still on the air. This might be permanent or take a very long time to recover from. Whatever the hell it is. At least the Vertigo is fading a bit. But I have to work from home all week. I tried going in Monday and in the middle of the day I hit a wall. I had to run my arm along the wall to not fall down. Infection of some kind, right? All will be well in the end, right? Working at home sounds great when there is a snowstorm, or maybe for a day, but man it gets old in a hurry. It's boring. I want to be out there in the world.

  14. With potential regression from Javy, McKinstry, Dingler. Maybe Dingler progresses. A lot of unknowns. I think Harris is making moves to try to win, but mostly to preserve the core future, his guys, and they'll start trickling in this season. Post Skubal there may be a drop off, but Harris is looking long term and sustainability under his system

  15. It’s not meant to be believed. It’s meant to be a demonstration of their sheer power and impunity to say and do whatever the hell they want. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors, and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.” —Unidentified senior Bush (43) administration advisor to New York Times journalist Ron Suskind, 2004

  27. I found this part interesting: Main Street and other traditional RSNs promise teams a fixed amount per season for their TV rights, typically tens of millions for most teams. Teams carried by MLB, however, are not promised a fixed fee by the league. Instead, MLB pays them whatever their telecasts wind up bringing in, via streaming subscriptions and traditional TV distribution fees. So based on this a small market team still get small market media money from MLB. It's an interesting dynamic because there's no danger of MLB "missing payments" to teams because it's not a lump sum, it's a percentage of what MLB gets. It also incentivizes teams to have a better product because that would result in better subscriptions and more money. However that uncertainty means teams might be much more reluctant to commit big to a roster if there's not guarantee they'll get x-amount of dollars in media money. I think it also fails to recognize that big market teams will get big market media money. I still think some level of pooling of media money is necessary to balance the league.

  29. Seems like most folks feel the team could do even just a little bit better if only the manager or GM used this one neat trick. I wish it were possible to truly get a feel for how tigers fans feel relative to fans of other teams. Because to me, it sure seems like the vast majority of tigers fans are ****ing lunatics. And I don’t feel like it’s just a matter of proximity bias, because I don’t get the same sense from Lions fans, M fans, or Wings fans. The Pistons only have 13 fans, but for the most part seem pretty chill.

  32. He's been there 18 years and has finished with fewer than 8 wins one time. He would have been to the playoffs for the 7th time in 8 years this year, despite a slew of injuries, if his rookie kicker made a 44-yard field goal. He deserved autonomy over staff decisions. It takes some gall for the Ravens to fire him. I think they will regret this decision. Who will they even replace him with? Stefanski? Minter? Try to be the smartest guy in the room and grab a coordinator on no one's radar? This has all the elements of a decision that blows up in their face in three years when they haven't gone better than 8-9 and are trying to hire someone another replacement.

  33. soldier field sucks, and as soon as they move to a new stadium the better off they'll be. its impossible to get to. its hell to get out of. its a long ass walk to the train - unless you go the back way and then its still long. its small for an nfl stadium. it looks like a toilet bowl on top of the old stadium. the bears dont even own it and have to deal with the chicago freaking park district (which, because it is run by the city of chicago, is a complete mess that cannot function without corruption and lunacy). if the bears were a competent organization, they would have had shovels in the ground in arlington heights two years ago, but because they are the bears currently led by charlatan kevin warren, theyre still dicking around saying they might move somewhere else. the newest lie being northwest indiana. if the state of illinois or the city of chicago were run by competent people, they would have come up with a comparable site in the city years ago. but we are not a competent city. we are a banana republic. good riddance to the bears. the smartest thing that idiotic franchise ever did will be moving to the burbs. seeing as they are the bears, they are in the process of ****ing that up too.

  34. No. No. No. A million times No. This team can not afford to have a first time OC to learn on the job calling plays and developing a game plan. I don’t believe he’s done that at any level. Blough may end up as a great OC someday but this job is too much for him right now.

  37. My OC Tier List Top Three 1. Kliff Kingsbury, Free Agent: Probably my top choice at the moment, though I think it would be polarizing and many would hate it. On the surface, his background is in college and he's failed in both Arizona and Washington. But he's a very good OC. He's why Washington went as far as they did last year, a large reason why Jayden Daniels won OROY, and it's not as if he's the reason the Commies lost this year. I see a lot of Washington fans confused why he is leaving and wondering if he was fired or just quit. That said, it's not as if there are no potential drawbacks. Kyler Murray and Jayden Daniels are different quarterbacks than Jared Goff. He would need to adapt his offense to suit the type of talent Detroit has. 2. Kevin Stefanski, Free Agent: I think this is the most logical move if he doesn't get a head coaching gig. He'd be a good hire. But, it also feels like he's a very short-term solution. Either he's good and he bolts for a head coaching gig next offseason, or he's bad and he's the OC version of Matt Eberflus in Dallas, fired after one season. Naturally, anyone you hire for OC will hope to one day leave for a HC position. But ideally you could get at least a few years out of a good candidate before you go back to the drawing board. Stefanski likely won't stop being a hot candidate for open jobs unless he sucks as a coordinator. 3. Pete Carmichael Jr., Broncos Senior Offensive Assistant: This would be a little John Morton 2.0, which makes me nervous, but at least Carmichael has had tangible success as an OC, unlike Morton. If the goal is to replicate the Saints' offensive success with Drew Brees, there's no better man to do it than one of its architects. During the Saints run, Payton and Carmichael actually traded play calling back and forth, which may be something that intrigues Campbell... Now, Carmichael got worse and ultimately fired when Brees and Payton left town. But, it's not as if he had much to work with, trotting out Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, and Derek Carr while suffering from the cap hell his old bosses put him in. His last year in New Orleans they still finished 9th in scoring and 14th in offensive yards despite starting Derek Carr. When they ditched him for Kubiak, they dropped to 24th and 21st, respectively. Good Candidates 4. Mike Kafka, Giants OC and Interim Head Coach: Kafka is young and a sharp offensive mind. The Giants development of Dart and Skattebo is in no small part thanks to him. He's also not that far removed from a lot of head coaching interest, and he might get interviews this cycle. But he's also not really proven himself as a play caller like some of the above names. I do like him more than his former boss though. 5. Brian Dabboll, Free Agent: It's easy to remember why Dabboll got hired in New York for his work with the Patriots and Bills and forget that he had previously been fired by the Jets, Browns, Dolphins, and Chiefs. Is he a good OC? I think he is. But I'm not sure if he's the chicken or the egg based on the successes of Tom Brady in New England and Josh Allen in Buffalo. I won't hate this if it's the direction Campbell goes. But I won't be surprised by any which direction it goes. Less Enthusiastic 6. Marcus Brady, Chargers Passing Game Coordinator: Brady was the OC for the Colts from 2021 to 2022, where he was pretty good in 2021 with Carson Wentz and then very bad in 2022 with Matt Ryan, getting fired in November. Reich called the plays in Indy though, so fair to say he was something of a scapegoat. He probably deserves another shot, and I wouldn't hate this, but I also don't think it's super likely. He's never called plays, so it would be a weird marriage. 7. Nate Scheelhaase, Rams Passing Game Coordinator: Scheelhaase is a young, up-and-coming OC candidate who has done well this year in the McVay machine and seems likely to get his chance soon as an OC. But he's also unproven, has never called plays, and is in only his second year in the NFL after working with Matt Campbell at Iowa State for five years. I don't hate the idea of finding a young up-and-comer, but it's hard to ignore the known unknowns. Wildcards 8. Mike LaFleur/Klay Kubiak/Grant Udinski, Rams/49ers/Jaguars OC: I lump these three together because I don't think any are particularly likely, but I also wouldn't be shocked by Campbell trying to poach an OC from an organization like the Rams, 49ers, or Jaguars, where their head coach calls the plays. You don't really hear about any of these guys for head coaching gigs (maybe notwithstanding Udinski this cycle), because they are overshadowed by McVay, Shanahan, and Coen. If they don't want to be stuck in coaching purgatory, it's not crazy to think one may take a jump to a play calling role in an offense with weapons like what the Lions have to offer. Though worth noting that Mike LaFleur called plays for the Jets and was terrible (kind of a recurring theme for Jets play callers). 9. David Blough, Commanders Assistant QB Coach: Already mentioned by MTB, this would be out of left field, but I don't hate it if Campbell wants someone to mold who would likely keep the role for a few years. He's very young, but the regime obviously likes him. But, he's never called plays and Campbell would presumably retain play calling duties. I like him more to join as Passing Game Coordinator assuming Shaw leaves with Morton. If they really want youth, Kafka and Scheelhaase are both in their 30s and seem like better options. Internal 10. Scottie Montgomery/Hank Fraley/Mark Brunell: All leave something to be desired. I'd like to keep all three, but frankly if they weren't the guy last cycle, what about 9-8 has set them apart this season? In addition, this would probably come with Campbell keeping play calling, which I am not a fan of. No Thanks 11. Tanner Engstrand, Jets OC: I don't think they would be interested, but I do think he would accept if they were. It could be they didn't see the experience they wanted in an OC last year, and he's now got a year under his belt. I saw nothing out of the New York Jets offense worthy of a promotion though. 12. Eric Bienemy, Bears Running Back Coach: After everyone got up in arms about Bienemy not getting a head coach gig, he's kind of proven everyone right by failing in Washington and at UCLA (though I'm not sure what success actually would look like at the latter). I think there are worse choices out there, but there are better choices too. Ultimately I don't think he will be on the Lions list and I wouldn't at all be surprised if he ends up taking his old job back in KC this offseason.

  41. That was one goddamned impressive win yesterday. They beat the Knicks will out of them. And without Jalen Duren. Still room for improvement. Room for a good outside shooter. They should be the favorite for the Finals now (if they stay healthy). And they are deep as hell too, meaning they can take some of the mileage off their stars in the stretch. What an incredible turnaround from two years ago. With many of the same pieces. Shows you how a good coach can really turn things around.
