I would also like to know what other 9 teams are on Rodriguez' no trade clause. I've either searched in the wrong areas or its buried within the recipe of fruitcake. I don't begrudge the use of the no trade clause. It just seems to me that there wasn't good faith negotiating somewhere along the way. There was a deal in place, the participants knew there was an obstacle, but it wasn't addressed until, what, 2 hours before the deadline? This doesn't sit well after last year's episode where the specific issue wasn't the fault, it was the lack of communication from Rodriguez and his agent. I guess from my position, and I understand I'm completely on the outside looking in, one of these incidents by itself is a one off. But one after the other is a bit of an eye opener.

It all depends on what the return is, which, we may never know what it was. I don't know how reliable the ratings on MLB pipeline are, but the Dodgers have 6 catchers among their top 30 prospects. They are mostly younger and lower level, but there's also one at AAA. Maybe among the package are the AAA C and a younger C (as well as other prospects).

In an alternate universe, the prospect hounds are ecstatic beyond belief.

It depends upon what the Tigers would have received. If there’s a young MLB ready catcher coming back as part of the trade, that’d be fine.

That’s the only contract decision there is to make. It’s his to opt in or opt out. There shouldn’t be an extension. The Tigers can look to trade him for a bat if he opts in.

I think he deserved a stronger vote for the hall of fame than he received.

Well, here is how I look at it. It stinks that the Tigers couldn't make a deal. I don't think we know enough to accurately assign blame to anyone in particular. We can make all of the assumptions and generalizations that we want to, some of which can be pretty plausible, but we won't know enough of the story to determine how bad some of the actors were.

Hence why I said reasonable. I am fine with holding the line. I think it needs to be done, particularly at his first trade deadline. Cisnero and Shreve, if they were dealt for meh, so be it. They are relievers with inconsistent histories, so that's fine. But players of higher quality, get quality in return. Now, they need to continue to hold the line. Unless they completely fall apart, they need to keep Cisnero and Shreve and not allow teams to pick them up through the rest of this season for nothing. I heard a theory about Shreve maybe being released in lieu of bringing up younger pitchers. I don't know, seems foolish when the AAA goes into late September. It seems odd to me that the Dodgers may have been the only team that offered anything worthwhile. But I suppose it is possible that the timeline for those other deals fell apart once Harris thought he had a deal with the Dodgers. Other team(s) may have pivoted to their other options. Teams are probably scrambling around yesterday and depending upon what they have going on, they might cut bait with options that appear bleak.

If this is true, were there other reasonable deals lined up? Did any of those deals involve teams on his no trade clause? We'll probably never know unless other GMs speak up.

Hopefully free agents put more importance on Lorenzen's experience with the Tigers than they do Rodriguez' nontrade when considering whether the Tiger organization suits them.

I do think they should have moved Cisnero and Shreve for whatever they could get. Maybe there simply wasn't any interest. I think the return for Lorenzen is fine. I don't know enough about what really happened with the Rodriguez trade to have an informed opinion. I honestly doubt any of us do.

If that is the case, if all other offers were of JD Martinez return for whatever reason, then I'm alright with Harris opting for the much better deal even if there's more risk involved. I'm fine with Harris expecting a minimum return, and if that return ain't happening, then the trade ain't happening. Let the other GMs know you aren't going to be a pushover now or in the future. It has been mentioned several times by others, but I think it bears repeating. We don't know everything that went on behind the scenes. Its possible that the Dodger deal was closer to happening than the eventual result suggests. His side might have led the Tigers and Dodgers on to thinking a deal could be made, to whatever degree that possibility was, he might not have said 100% no. We simply don't know.
