Week Five: Carolina Panthers (0-4) @ Detroit Lions (3-1)
RandyMarsh replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
I get that we're only 4 games into the season but the Lions also closed last season strong and have the second best record in the NFL over the last 14 games. I remember last year when they won a few games in a row after that 1-6 start fans were like "lets see if they hang with Buffalo, if they do then I'll start to believe", well they hung with Buffalo, then it was "lets see them beat Minnesota", well they beat Minnesota, then if was "well lets see them win on the road in NY then I'll start to believe", they then won in NY. Finally it was "if they can beat the Packers in Lambeau then I'll start to believe it's different", then of course they did that. Then in the offseason it was "Lets see if they can hang with KC", well they not only hung with them but beat them, then it's "let's see if they can win in Lambeau again" and of course they went out and dominated there. I mean the skeptics just keep moving the goal post every week, it'll get to the point where fans will keep doing it until they win a Super Bowl and I think that's unfair. What they have done the previous 60 years shouldn't matter. If the franchise won 5 Super Bowls 20 years ago would that make this current team any better? No yet in those skeptic eyes for some reason it would. -

I just heard a radio caller earlier call some Lions fans "s.o.l.f. scared old lions fans" and I got a chuckle out of it cause it's true. Its like some fans are just too afraid to actually come to the realization that this team is good. I say that not cause of anybody here really but just many people I see on social media and callers on the radio. This morning a caller called in and said the Lions were gonna lose cause they lost to Carolina last year and got shutout by them like 5 years ago. Like I can maybe see citing last year even though both teams are different but jeez 5 years has absolutely no berring on this week's game. It just goes back to folks being too afraid or just not willing to just accept the fact this team is a really good football team. -
In regards to Butkus, I was too young to follow him as a player so my first real introduction to him was on the Saturday Morning Teen Show in the 90s called "Hang Time" where he played a High School Basketball Coach.

I know Buddha isn't going to like this but I think I'm actually rooting for the Bears tonight, I just prefer they win some games so they don't end up getting the number 1 pick again and God forbid the top 2 picks. Plus even though I don't expect the Lions to be competing with a team like the Commanders for the 6th or 7h seed you never know what may happen so the loss may come in handy if for some reason something crazy happens within the division.

No cupcake schedule next year for Michigan. Got Texas non conference then USC, Oregon, Washington, Ohio State and possibly the B1G Championship game. They miss Penn St. atleast.

Btw that Rangers win was their first playoff series win since beating us back in 2011. Feels like a lifetime ago now.

Not advocating necessarily nor do I know if he even has the skillset for it but would they consider just moving Johnny Kane to the booth if he showed interest in the job? Kinda seems like a move Bally would make, instead of spending the time or resources searching for a bigger/proven name just give the job to the next man up so to speak. -
Luckily there is only Minny and Philly left where the cold weather could possibly be a factor. Maybe Baltimore too but that would take an unseasonably cool day since their evenings in early November are still generally in the 50s at worst.

Reminds me of how anytime there was a base open and a pitcher threw ball 1 to a good hitter Rod would always say "yeah he doesnt want anything to do with him, he's just gonna put him on 1st base", maybe 1 out of every 10-15 times he would say that it would actually end up being the case but the overwhelming majority of the time it would just be because the pitcher just happened to throw a ball cause they're not perfect. -
Instead of a row of pinetrees like Colorado did on theirs we could do a row of abandon houses and buildings to connect with our city and culture.

I never liked Brennamen even before the comments with the lone exception of his Maggs HR call when he was filling in for Buck on Fox. I loved that call but otherwise he always just gave me a bad vibe for some reason. -

Fwiw Jacobs has the lowest qb rating against when targeted on the whole team and one of the better ones in football. Of course that doesnt factor in all the penalties that he has been called against him but still atleast according to the stats he hasnt been as bad as we like to think. -
Just once Id like to see these diva stars get traded to a place that they don't want to go to. I know it will never happen cause nobody will trade for a guy unless they know they want to be there but it sure would be nice to see.

I like Johnny as well, he's no Shannon Hogan but that's a high bar to ask out of anybody. -

Nice to see V and Mosely practicing, would be great to get our line back along with our starting secondary sans CJGJ. -
The Shep news automatically makes the offseason a win in my books, everything is gravy from here on out.

I'm guessing it's just for their play this year and doesnt factor in their future value or prospect rankings.

Considering how well Lions fans have been traveling, coupled with the ease of getting TB tix and the amount of transplanted Michiganders in Florida I could see that Bucs game feeling like a Lions home game. -
I hope they run more underneath slant routes for him or 10-15 yd crossing patterns where you get the ball in his hands quickly and let him use his speed. Much like Miami does with Hill and Waddle.

We also have to keep in mind that the Lions are a notoriously aggressive team on 4th downs so our 2nd downs are often essentially like 1st downs depending on where we are on the field. Like if we're in the part of the field where 4 down territory is in play and its 2nd and 10, Campbell may have already told Johnson they plan to go for it on 4th down if he gets it inside say 3 yards so in turn Johnson may call back to back run plays to set up the 4th and short scenario. If they manage to catch the defense off guard with one of them and get a big gain then that's just a bonus. -

I still say the Lions had footwear problems that game and didn't bring the right spikes. Reason I say that is that it ended up being unseasonably cold for Carolina so the field played different than it otherwise would which was why you saw the Lions having so much trouble with their footing. They probably would've lost anyway but I think if they came prepared with the right gear it wouldn't have looked as bad. -

I seem to recall Miggy being told he was actually ranging too far to his right on some balls and instead should just go to the bag and let the 2b make the play. -
Not that it means a whole lot in the grand scheme of things but Michigan closes the gap on Georgia by picking up 10 first place votes.

I was always most concerned with the conditioning part when it came to Carter vs. Off the field stuff and I think the conditioning thing is something that may not show up till later in the season. In college he got away with it cause UGA blew so many opponents out he got to rest alot in the 2nd half, then in college you get that 5 to 6 week break in late November and December. You obviously don't get that in the NFL so I want to see how he fairs later in the long NFL season. Will he still be a force or will he tire out and take games off? We will have to see.
