I too wonder what these mysterious character issues for Carter are all about and if there are any actual substance to them. I know McShay said he heard he might slide because of them but that was several weeks ago and there was no specific thing he said he heard just the vague "character concerns". Until I see some concrete evidence from multiple sources I'm not going to put any stock in them nor expect any team to do so either.

Im sure I would be upset at the time but by the next day I would look back and be happy that they atleast won 1 playoff game. It was the same way for me with UM in 21/22, I was disappointed we got crushed in the semis but after the original disappointment I was happy to just be there and beat OSU. I imagine Id feel the same with the Lions except would be even more excited about just getting there.

Regarding the pitch clock I wonder the effect it will have on offense. Theoretically its going to be tougher for pitchers to throw max effort everytime so you would think that the batters are likely to get more hittable pitches. On the other hand if the pitchers can and do indeed still throw max effort everytime is it going to lead to even more pitcher injuries?

Tork with a statcast measured 415ft fly out. New year same bad luck on balls in play. -

We're basically guaranteed a top odds spot so even if we win some games it really doesn't alter are chances much in the Wemby sweepstakes but I'd rather just finish as low as possible so when the inevitable happens and we get screwed by the lottery and fall we will be picking higher. -

Did it without being blessed with a true all time talent like an MJ, Lebron, Curry etc. too. -

Watching some clips of on Twitter highlighting the new pitch clock and it amazes me the difference in pace of play. After years of being accustomed to pitchers/batters taking forever in betwen pitches it almost felt like the game was on fast forward watching those clips. -

I thought Cade played alot better when Bagley was on the court. Having that lob threat seemed to open things up for him when he penitrated so maybe that was their reasoning? -
My brother is ambidextrous but there certain things he does better with a specific hand than others. Like he bowls left handed but throws a baseball right handed. Bats right handed but golf's left handed, writes left handed but uses utensils with his right hand. Never understood it.

Yeah I'd put the odds at slim to none. If they put together another strong draft this year along with taking steps on the field like making the playoffs I could potentially see them taking a chance on a guy like that next draft but this draft I just don't see it. I think they realize that the division is their's for the taking and the conference is down so they are going to be focused on guys that can make an immediate difference right away.

Fwiw(which probably isn't much) CBS Sports had us at 4 for potential landing spots after the Bengals, Eagles(they noted they'd need to clear a lot of space) and the Giants.
-
So the Jazz get a kings ransom for Rudy and then basically replace him with a guy they drafted in the back of the 1st a couple weeks prior? Nice!
-
You also got to keep in mind that we also will have a couple drafts to stockpile talent before the big extensions come up so even if we can't resign everybody to big extensions we could potentially in house replacements.

I do think Higgins would be a perfect fit here and take the offense to another level. St. Brown is the perfect possession receiver that can move the chains and make people miss. Jamo is potentially that speed guy that can reek havoc on crossing patterns or blow by defenders. All that we are missing is the big WR that can go up and get balls when the coverage is good and Higgins is one of the best in football at that along with being great at alot of other things. I dont know enough about manipulating the cap to comment on the effects of his salary would have but as long as it didn't cripple it Id have no qualms about giving up the 18th pick for him in this class for him. I think he could help us score more points than any defender we can find can prevent points from scoring for us save for maybe Ramsey.
-
Yeah his age is worrisome but even though I haven't fact checked it seems that middle linebackers age alot better than most positions since the position relies heavily on instinct and tackling ability. But like you said he probably wants to go to a proven contender and not a possible or speculative one like us so it really doesn't matter.

Sorry there isn't NOBODY but a whole what 3 to 4 other players that fit the bill of being 6'3 or taller among the top 25 WRs? While not none like I previous said(I hadn't scoured every rankings) it does basically show my overall point that there aren't many big bodied outside receivers in this draft and none that rank in Johnson's tier.
-
What's his spin rates though?
-
This is why Im for drafting Quinten Johnson. Looking at the wr draft rankings there's some intriguing guys but he's the only one that I seen in the top 15 or so that is above 6'2 and fits the bill of the stereotypical big outside receiver that can go up and get those balls so if we want to get a guy like that which I think would be a big help he may be the only legit option in the draft.

The Jobe pick was a head scratcher at the time and is looking even more like one now. I tried to justify it at the time or atleast tried to see what Avila was thinking but even as much as I tried it was still hard to defend. I think the thinking was that Mayer/Lawlar would cost too much and they could get Jobe at a discount and get another premium player(s) with the 32nd and/or 39th pick. The thing is that Mayer signed for slot at 4 and Jobe was just under so at most the Tigers saved about 300K by picking him over Mayer, to me that wasn't nearly enough to take on the risk of a HS pitcher and passing on an up the middle prospect.

Assuming they view Carter like the pundits do as one of the true elite prospects in the draft I too definitely see a scenario where they atleast try to trade up for him. I just keep going back to the Jamo trade up as reasons why I think that, Holmes said something to the effect of they had 11 guys they thought separated from the rest of the draft and Jamo was the last of those 11 guys, instead of just being conservative and just accepting a lower tier player that was going to fall to your next pick he did what it took to make sure he got one of the players that he felt separated himself from the pack. Also my memory is a little hazy but I think he was trying to do that for Sewell as well who he targeted as being one of those guys but either a deal couldn't get done or he rolled the dice hoping that the Bengals and Falcons would go the route they did. Anyway yeah it seems to be in the Holmes playbook to get the standout players or atleast the standout players in his eyes and he isn't shy about paying the price to get them.

My worry about the situation is that even if Miller is completely innocent and legit had no idea what was going to happen just the thought that he would put himself in that position to begin with concerns me. I know "kids will be kids" and things like that but he was on the fast track to making 10s of millions of dollars and being a top 5 pick and he still chooses to put himself in positions like that and hang around people like that. To me if I was an Executive I would just fear that it's just a matter of time where he puts himself in a situation like this again.
-
I could potentially seeing Porter at 18 just cause of the depth of the position. If the various big boards are to be believed there's potentially 5 or even 6 1st round worthy DBs with the top 4 having little to no separation so if a team has him at say 4 or 5 on that list there's a decent chance he'll still be there. Just another reason why I'm a little apprehensive about taking a DB at 6 unless Holmes has 1 in mind that he feels is clearly above the rest and doesn't want to risk missing out on.
-
Without knowing his background or him as a person I'd take a chance on him if I was a team with a mid to late 1st or a team that has a shit load of picks and can afford the risk but no way would I take that risk if I was picking in the top 10.

Speaking of Spielman just watched this video a little bit ago where he talks about the combine and "workout warriors". Nothing that most people don't already know but it was cool to see him specifically bring up ARSB as to why you shouldn't put all your stock in workouts and most notably 40 times.

2023 Detroit Tigers Spring Training Thread
RandyMarsh replied to RatkoVarda's topic in Detroit Tigers
According to bref we have paid Miggy 360 million dollars over his career and he has given us 49.5 wins. So despite us getting him at a "bargain" for several early seasons when it's all said and done we have paid close to free agent market value per win with him. Never would've thought that be possible back in the good old days.
