I think it also comes from seeing an opportunity to get a player they see as special enough to be able to dominate and make plays. That was what they saw in Gibbs. They could have relied on Montgomery and someone else, but Gibbs can break defenses. I think they hope Arnold will develop into a dominant CB (now that he’s not getting so many flags). They wanted Gonzales, but Terrion is close, imo.

I suspect he much prefers to stay in Houston (I have nothing to base that on) and entertained offers from others when that seemed impossible. With Bregman being the final big FA out there and Spring Training almost here, the media needs to induce clicks somehow. I know Boras is seen as a master in getting great contracts, but I kind of like the wait ‘em out thing the Tigers seem to be doing. I don’t think Bregman is either a huge get or a huge risk (without knowing term/$). i do think he’d improve the team, but if it doesn’t work out, that’s okay too.

For awhile I have wondered if moving Manning to the pen made sense. Tell him to forget trying to pace himself as a starter, just air it out as a reliever. With all the injuries last year that wasn’t such a good idea, maybe with a deeper staff it would be more reasonable.
