2024 Trade Deadline Rumors and Discussion
RatkoVarda replied to LongLiveMaroth's topic in Detroit Tigers
C - Rogers and Kelly are both elite defenders, and Kelly is somehow league average at the plate. Dingler is having his best season and if he is a successful ML player, he would look just like them. Cubs, Padres have awful Cs so maybe there's a deal to be done. Canha - some value here; I assume they can get more than Holub in return Urshela - like Canha but a whole lot less Flaherty - like He-who-will-not-be-named, Harris again has the #1 short term pitcher to trade. Don't eff it up. Foley - sure why not? it's not working, so everything and everybody should be considered, no matter how much risk it is -
20234-24 14-68. Now what? (The 2024 Offseason thread)

Gores is not a good owner; if he was one, Monty would not have been HC; but very few owners would eat $65M and suffer the embarrassment of this move; so good for Gores -

KLaw 11. Detroit Tigers: Konnor Griffin, OF, Jackson (Miss.) Prep - Griffin is the high-ceiling, high-risk guy among the prep players and could still end up in the top 10. I also think the Tigers would be on Rainer or Montgomery, depending on who gets here. -
Bob Good, House Freedom Caucus Chair and total MAGA nutjob conservative, but he once supported DeSantis, and now appears to have lost his primary in VA. Trump endorsed his opponent who is up less than 400 votes. Scary to think what the GQP now is.

FG had 6 50-level guys traded; does not include Cole Ragans who has been fantastic for KC who got him in early July. Avila's 2nd best trade was a little move for Olson. Need good scouts so you can get lucky sometimes. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/ranking-the-prospects-traded-during-the-2023-deadline/

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/a-change-of-scenery-has-worked-well-for-jack-flaherty/ Flaherty, on the other hand, could be viewed as a rental whose value they’ve quickly restored; if he netted three prospects in the 35-40 FV range last summer when he was scuffling, the return for the Tigers ought to be more substantial while he’s pitching well, and he could very well wind up as the top starter available. On the other hand, given how well he’s meshed with Detroit’s coaches, perhaps he’s open to an extension. -
offense sucks and will suck even more once Canha, Urshela, and Kelly are traded and replaced with rookies. nothing can be done about it this year, and for the future, no reason whatsoever to think they know how to maximize the performance of either starting talent (Greene, Carpenter) or marginal talent (everyone else). hoping and praying that you can complete a competent lineup if every player develops and every player stays healthy has not worked out for almost 10 years, but Harris seems to need to see that fiasco play out in person for the next few seasons.

a rookie pitcher who they have never faced? what could go wrong?
-
Terrifying. 5 seats is all they need, and the GQP is looking at getting more than that for decades. The Bernie Bros told me it did not matter if Trump or Hillary won, and then when Roe v Wade was overturned, student debt relief was blocked, the VRA gutted, affirmative action rolled back - they all shrugged because I guess they don't care about policy, and mostly care about moaning and groaning.
-
we won't know real pain until Meadows and Tork come back and bring Dingler and Leonard with them.

I cannot believe it has been 40 years! I delivered the Detroit News in the afternoon and would read the stories and scan every box score bit by bit through my route. I would try to catch both CNN's Sports Tonight and ESPN's SportsCenter recaps each night. From 35-5, to Morris' no hitter early on, to the title, it was a genuinely magical season. One of the great North American Champions that never got the attention they were due. In part because, outside of Sparky, Gibby and Morris, everyone was a low-key professional. Not trying to be negative, but the gap between 1968 and 1984 was 16 years. The gap between 1984 and the next title will be 3 times as long (or maybe they never win it again in my lifetime). There's has been a lot of good baseball, and a whole lot more bad baseball in the last 40 years, but the 1984 team literally made me a fan for life.
-
somehow they are 13th in runs scored, while 21st in AVG, 25th in OBP, 17th in SLUG, and 19th in OPS maybe they are "clutch" or maybe it's the occasional explosion skewing the numbers

no rush; Harris will be ready when he's ready

Ted Cruz one upped Mitch by clapping long after Trump left the room. Very Stalin-esque. Then he called his wife to let her know she is ugly.

conventional wisdom for many teams is to not draft HS pitchers before a certain point and look at them only later in the draft; Avila defied that with Jobe at 3; if Harris and Co are going to take the risk of Caminiti, fine by me; they seem to know how to develop pitching; if he's worth the risk to them, take him -
after Trump endorsed Larry Hogan for Senate, Hogan told him to **** off
-
bears repeating that Trump regularly hurled racial insults at Mitch's wife.
-
to the surprise of no one, it appears that Thomas still has not reported all his trips with his Sugar Daddy.
-
i'll take scoring 16 runs in a 3 game series every time; should win 2 of 3 with that; 14 runs allowed? not great
-
there's your one run, Mize; don't waste it
-
hard decisions will need to be made. signing any pitcher to a long term deal is inherently risky. Flaherty and Skubal both have long injury histories, only compounding the risk. Harris so far has purposely avoided anything risky. clear to me how this plays out. Avila infamously never traded Boyd, always waiting for a godfather offer that never came; keeping him was meaningless; horrible asset allocation
