True, the money for Skubal will be huge. But look at what some of these All Star type outfielders are getting. I don't see the Tigers signing Riley for $20M per season and like you said, he seems like he may break down. But cutting way back on his strikeouts and staying somewhat healthy would make him a true superstar. There really is no replacing Skubal but we may have a Greene replacement in house.

I think just the opposite...if the Tigers wouldn't have gone to the playoffs the last 2 seasons, people would be calling for Scott Harris' head for his total lack of moves. So maybe Harris has Avila to thank for keeping the heat off of him?

The Skubal situation may tell us a lot. Are any Tiger players, ever, going to be signed long term for expensive contracts? Or is the young talented prospects being groomed to take the place of the more expensive players (Riley)? We really don't know if Harris is given a number on the payroll, I really suspect he's been told to keep it low. We just...don't know.

I'll make this kinda simple and let it be the end of it. If it weren't for Al Avila, the Tigers wouldn't have made the playoffs the last 2 seasons. And if so, the heat on Harris would be suffocating. His seat would be SO hot, his pants would catch fire. Does that mean I like the job Avila did? No way, I wanted him fired when he extended Brad Ausmus. But it's Al's players and manager who got us into the playoffs, in spite of Harris not bringing in any help.

Vierling, McKinstry and Torres? Who else ya got? 2 utility players and a player who fell into our lap? 2nd base wasn't really a position of need but we sure could use a 3rd baseman...

I would take it one step further. If Avila wouldn't have hired Hinch, the Tigers very well may not have made the playoffs the last 2 years. And Harris would be feeling a lot of heat from the media and fans. Most casual fans don't see the good he has done in rebuilding our barren farm system. They just see his lack of moves that could have helped our ML team. He has to put up or shut up this off-season, he has a playoff team that just needs a couple of pieces to seriously contend.
