Still, he's Willie, and it was a treat to see him. Going to see an old performer who isn't up to it anymore isn't anything that would be on my list, but I do remember going to Baker's (Keyboard Lounge) one night and Sippy Wallace was on. She was already 90 something and they had to help her to the stage, but once she got there it was like a light bulb going on, she was great - though you could still see what more she would have been if she still had 30yrs more energy. Musicians can be tough old nuts. I have recordings Artur Rubentstein made at 90, he was still bringing it. Quote
GalagaGuy Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Funny thing, if I had to list my least favorite concert, I'd have to go with Prince and I say that as someone who likes his music. Went to his birthday show at Cobo back in the summer of 86 and the set list was just disappointing. He only played one song from Purple Rain and didn't even do his other hits like Little Red Corvette or Delirious. He did sing How Much Is That Doggie In The Window though. It felt more like a jam session than a concert. I'm sure that sounds awesome to a lot of people, but I just remember being bummed after the concert was over. Quote

On this, I recently saw footage of Ann Wilson from Heart in a wheelchair talking most of the lines in the songs rather than singing. The comments “she’s so brave…” were sprinkled into the comments referencing how this was a big waste of money. I wouldn’t pay a dime to witness her “being brave”; much less $150. They made a fortune in the 70’s and 80’s. Sorry if you blew through it Ann. I have no financial obligation to support you phoning it in. I pay to witness a performance. Quote

chasfh Posted June 4 Posted June 4 I saw Paul McCartney three times in the 2010s, and while it was thrilling to be in the same building watching a living musical deity perform, I was mildly disappointed that at least 90% of the set list was the same across all three shows, two of which were in 2011 and the other in 2017, and that his banter and stories were substantially identical. He clearly geared the show to first-time/one-time-only attendees. I will tell you something that really impressed me, though: during his 2018-19 tour around the world, his US leg was almost mostly small cities, including Raleigh, NC; Greenville, SC; Lexington, KY, Fort Wayne, IN; Green Bay, WI; Madison, WI; and Moline, IL. I thought that was pretty cool of him to do. Quote

I'm pretty sure it was George who I've seen say in interviews that one the things that drained the life out of being in the Beatles for him was when it got to where they could no longer be musicians playing music for people in venues where they could actually be musicians. smr-nj Posted June 5 Posted June 5 It pains me to say this, but the worst concert I ever saw was Eric Clapton at the old Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. It was during the “I shot the sherif” era. What is Clapton’s claim to fame? His guitar playing. Unfortunately he was either drunk and or higher than a kite. So while the guitar was around his neck, I think maybe two or three times during the first song and a half his fingers touched the strings on the guitar. It was summer, a hot day, and we had all sat through an opening band that while they weren’t awful, everyone was waiting for the main act to come on Eric. needless to say, when Clapton walked off the stage after the second song, pandemonium was all around us. People down on the field in front of the stage, took garbage cans and threw them through the speakers. The rest of us were hoping not to get killed that night. Me and three others I went there with found our way to a diner, because all the roads were closed off because cops were everywhere trying to get control. I have to say we had a lot more fun at the diner being stuck there for almost 2 hours than we had during the whole concert. I’ll have to think some of what my favorite concert was. Off the top of my head I wanna say one where I saw Bonnie Raitt with Jeff Healy at an outdoor concert in Jersey also….. in a very rural setting. She was fantastic as usual. So was he. oh! I just remembered another favorite of mine. It was Elton John at Madison Square Garden. That man puts on a show. Lol fun is all hell lots of singing along lots of costume changes, strobe lights and colorful things everywhere you looked. It was a good time. 1 Quote

oblong Posted June 5 Posted June 5 I regret not going to see Rush around 2012 or something like that. Biff texted me that they had tickets on Stubhub for like $20. I was "busy" with something very unimportant now but obviously at the time a big deal. Stupid Palace. If it were in Detroit I would have went but I didnt want to add to the headache of a 45 minute drive there plus the god awful experience of trying to leave that building after a well attended event. One regret for a concert I have is INXS. Saw them in the mid 90's. My mother in law had a connection to Bill Davidson somehow and we'd sometimes get access to their suite for shows and games. We got it for INXS. Trouble is I got drunk before we even left. There was a family party with all the distant cousins going on. Beer doesn't get me drunk, vodka does. I barely remember the show. Not saying they were my favorite or anything but heck... 1 Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted June 5 Author Posted June 5 I know for younger music fans these days, and ones of pop music, they don't care, but I really have no respect for people who lip synch, even partially. I have seen older artists that don't hit all the notes anymore and I am fine with that. In a TV show setting, I kind of understand, but not a live one. I think it's weak 1 Quote
oblong Posted June 5 Posted June 5 don't the producers of the TV show demand it in some cases? So they don't go off script? It doesn't bother me if they are doing a bunch of other stuff that's part of the presentation. Like if P!nk is flying around on a harness and dancing and all of that, then having backup help so that she can catch her breath.... that's fine. The extra things she does is part of performance art. Deleterious Posted June 5 Posted June 5 **** Clark and American Bandstand wouldn't let John Cougar's band play live. They mocked it. Quote

I know there are exceptions. The Red Hot Chili Peppers did it for a Super Bowl Halftime, but Anthony's mic was actually live. They said they'd never do that, but there were several acts and moving pieces and you can't properly soundcheck for that. Prince and Springsteen did not mime their halftime shows, but they were the only act playing, so they could do a little soundchecking. Quote

oblong Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Bandstand wouldn't let performers go live. I won't go into background why I have this on my list but the comments on here are hilarious. This Quote
