I'm sure I've mentioned this here before, but I am just knocked out that the Chicago Cubs are one of the most storied franchises in history, and yet they have never retired even one single-digit jersey number in their entire history. In fact, seven different players on their roster wear single-digits right now, including the illustrious Willi Castro sporting #1. And this after they just dumped Jon Berti (#5), and seeing Miguel Amaya (#9) go back on the List just last week in his first game coming off it. And of course, they had two guys in just the last two seasons wearing #0 (Marcus Stroman, and some guy named Jesus Tinoco who I don't remember even a year later).

The Cubs didn't begin retiring uniform numbers until 1982 with Ernie Banks. Players like Gabby Hartnett for example played before uniform numbers became an established thing. Many of the greats played for several teams besides the Cubs.
The team also has always seemed had a very conservative stance on retiring numbers, unlike say the Yankees,

Pondering whether Kahnle gets released got me thinking of a best case playoff staff. Assuming 12 pitchers:

Skubal/Flaherty/Mize/Morton (starters)

Finnegan/Vest/Melton/Cobb/Holton (top relievers)

Hurter (2nd lefty)/Hannifee (DP guy)most likely next tier

Which would leave one spot for Paddack/Hernandez/Kahnle/SGL/3rd lefty/Urquidy. I would probably go with SGL unless Sommers is lights out the rest of the way.

Not sure Kahnle could do anything the rest of the way to regain enough trust to pitch meaningful post reason minutes. Probably him or Montero are released?

No Cobb. That opens a spot. A 3rd LH pitcher may or may not be needed, depending who we play.

Cobb and Hinch have said they are targeting him to return in the bullpen this year. He is rehabbing in Toledo.

Doesn't mean he will be on the playoff roster.  Right now I'd say it's unlikely he pitches better in September than one of the other guys, but it is possible.  I definitely wouldn't have him as a lock in the pen.  I'd think Urquidy even has a better chance at this point of being on the postseason roster.

Of course Cobb isn’t a lock, but I’m sure the hope is he can build up arm strength and be useful/tolerate pain in short outings. Can anyone explain why Lange was sent down? Curious decision unless injury setback.

because Sommer is a lefty and Lange is the righty at the end of the depth chart right now. Next series against a more RHH team they'll swap again. Plus Lange needs to keep working and since he wasn't all that sharp in this 1st outing Hinch probably isn't willing to use him in a whole lot of situations.

I’ve been playing around with player lists too-for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs. I don’t see anyone including R Montero as part of either. He looked decent in his last two outings, including closing out a win. I wonder if he’s got a (limited) role going forward or just a temporary arm. At the same time I wonder how many more chances Paddack gets.

Another name who is likely a lock if healthy is Sewald.

Forgot about him and Lange. If healthy, final two spots (in order, health permitting): Cobb/Sewald/Haniffee/SGL/Lange.

Wish we would move on from Montero/Kahnle and see what we have in the others.

Kreidler DFA, Lange optioned to Toledo for Sommers.

Worst non-pitcher hitter in major league history with more than 200 career plate appearances (career OPS+: 11).
