offering to make him the highest paid starting pitcher is pointless?  I have a hard time thinking anyone would offer a 30 year old starter with an injury history and a six or seven inning cap on his starts a ten year deal.

Yes, because he’s getting more than five years and he’s getting more than 225 Ms.

I understand what youre trying to say, but ”highest paid” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in your post, since Gerrit Cole was guaranteed $100 million more than your offer.

Having just watched my daughter's HS production of "Newsies" i'm sure the plucky Detroit Tigers can come back in the Skubal stakes if they just sing and dance some more.  :--)

Fine...you can got to 6 at 45 mil per..makes him the highest paid per season.  And Cole had TJ surgery this year at 33...so, I'm not sure that's an argument for giving Skubal 10 yrs

I have one nagging thought and that is why didn't Skubal pitch the seventh inning ? He was throwing 101 so how could he have been "gassed " . Did he not want to pitch the 7th ? Did he try to go back out ? Did Hinch take him out to "protect' him ? Is Skubal only worth 6 innings even in an elimination game ? Did he place Free Agency above the team ?

I do not know the answer to any of these questions but it makes me wonder about his real value if your paying him for the post season and we have been eliminated two years running with him on the mound in elimination games and his pitch count is pre determined.

That’s my daughter’s HS musical in the spring.  She was in it a few years ago, too.  She was the leader of the Brooklyn gang and had a pretty good fake accent.

My daughter has been in it twice including middle school.  I'll make a comment about this in the political forum.

Cohen will offer 10/400+. Mets fans know it, and they are exploding their minds on social media right now.

10 years and 400M are the conservative estimates. I won't be surprised by 11 or 12 years and 440M or more.

need a couple of more teams to join the Phillies and Mets in a bidding war, and then Harris should trade Skubal this winter before he walks for a 2027 comp pick who might turn into a Top 100 prospect in 2032.

If Skubal is so confident in his ability to stay healthy for 10 years, sign a 5 year contract for $200m. That way, in 5 years, he can get another 5 year contract at the going rate in 2031, It may be up to $50m or $60m per year, or more.

I still think Boras leaking this means Skubal is interested in staying in Detroit. If Detroit's original offer was 4 years $100 million and Boras says they are $250 million apart, he will sign for $350 million which is not unheard of considering Gerrit Cole's contract at 9 years $324 million.

Teams get creative with opt outs, deferrals, signing bonuses. It might be doable.

IDK, it's SOP for agents to initially try to get teams bidding against themselves. They all do it, or try to do it, so I wouldn't put much into anything that comes out publicly one way or another because it's all bargaining strategy at this point.

This is why I don't think there is any chance that Skubal signs an extension with Detroit before becoming a FA unless he really wants to stay.  I still think its best to see what he can bring in a trade this winter and if not good enough hold on to him and see what happens after 2026 season.

I'm wondering if Skubal is the type of guy who doesn't necessarily want to be in a big market. On the field, he's the biggest competitor but he seems very down to earth otherwise.

I don't think guys care much about that anymore. They live in their own world no matter what city they are in, and especially the guys that sign the 9 figure deals have so much money they can live where they want, keep multiple top end homes, send their kids to school where they want, basically insulate themselves as much or as little as they want from anything about the locale they don't love.

My daughter was in chamber choir throughout high school at her all-girls' school. 7am practices 4 days per week were hard for teens that time of day, but meant that teachers and students coming to school were greeted by the sounds of angels.

It was related to the Disney part of the musical.  Nothing about the current leadership of the country.

I am not advocating ten years. I am not advocating anything specific. I’m simply pointing out that given the precedent that Gerrit Cole set with his contract, there is zero chance Skubal accepts as the only and only offer he can receive that gives him fewer years and fewer total dollars than that. There’s nothing in it for him to accept that when in literally everyone’ estimation, he can do way way better on both measures when he goes on the market.

You can make hay of the AAV part, and I agree that’s not nothing, but to players, that matters only for short-term contracts with first-year opt outs so they can be paid like a top tier guy while they are betting on themselves to get the years/dollars they really want. That’s exactly what Bregman did.

Speaking of Bregman, I promise you that if he got the same 6/172 with a second-year opt-out offer from the Tigers this offseason, he would not take it, unless his market collapses this winter and that offer is clearly a cut above all the others, and I don’t believe anyone thinks that’s going to happen. If six and 172 were his targets, he would be here right now.

Not having heard anything Hinch has said about this, my guess would be he was trying to balance the scales between getting as much as he possibly could out of Skubal, and not completely ruining his arm in advance of the ALCS. And hey, it almost worked. In fact, he could have gone the seventh, and he could have gone the eighth, but he would have to have come out anyway, because no way he was going fifteen.

Apropos of nothing, I never noticed before that you put a space before your punctuation.

I am starting to warm up to the idea of trading Skubal during the offseason. But if Harris does do that, he absolutely cannot make this a worse team that has more trouble competing for playoffs in 2026, because he would, rightly, be hammered for ****ing up our current team by falling in love with prospects and dreaming of a Tiger team that dominates baseball in some vague and indeterminant future—which is exactly what practically what everyone here who doesn’t like him criticizes him for doing right now!

So Skubal may get $40m per season? He started 31 games the last 2 seasons. That's almost $1.3m per start. And almost $13.000 per pitch. Rough estimates.

Cohen paid JV 43.3 mil for 3 years entering his age 38 season. The Mets will offer Skubal more than 40 mil per.

Look at what Snell got and look at his number of starts.  Or even Glasgow

I've heard some Tiger fans who say trade him and use that money to sign other players. The problem is, the Tigers wouldn't spend that money anyway. Heck, we're still waiting for them to use all of that money that came off the books from Cabrera. I'm starting to think maybe we should keep Skubal?
