I think this team sucks and needs lots of help. We have 5 players that are worthy of being on a World Series team and another 23 that should be no where near the major leagues..... But yet 8 out of 10 on this board think we are WS contenders in the next 5 years.

I don’t think there is a single franchise that has zero chance to contend for a World Series in five years. Even the Angels and Rockies could do it if they got religion on baseball management somehow. Remember how Al Avila ran this franchise into the ditch by 2022? We were contending for a World Series just two years later. No team is fated to be out of it for five years running. A front office has to put an effort into doing that.

How many years will we be setback if Mize leaves? 15? If both Skubal and Mize don’t get traded and only receive QO’s, this franchise will be setback 20 years. Add Flaherty in, and it will be 21 seasons.

Mize is our best pitcher right now

Add in Flaherty and it’d be back to 15

Fun fact: Casey Mize is a former #1 overall pick.

seems doubtful he can stay healthy, but if he does he could have a 20+ WAR career. Not HOF by any means but enough to make the pick look better than it was looking.

Every time he gets hurt though, he comes back better!

So, at least the injury effect does not seem to be cumulative.

Methinks Mize is going to get a nice contract in FA dependant on the CBA

That takes out their top 2 starters and are left with a very mediocre #3 type starter in Framber Valdez for $35 million, a surprisingly capable Keider Montero and a bunch of guys off and on the IL list.  What once was their strength is really going to take a huge step back.

He has command of his splitter and is using it more often. That's his ace pitch. He could be on the verge of a nice run, yes, if healthy. I would like to see Det keep him

We could always do the Jack Flaherty trade-and-sign with Casey. Although there is a bit of a history between him and this front office when it comes to signing him for another year, so …

You think a 2nd year pitcher and a guy coming off Tommy John surgery are going to step into Cy Young candidate territory and All Star, solid #2 starter?

No way.

I've always had this feeling that Mize isn't a big fan of the organization.  Hinch has pulled him after 4 2/3 innings several time while the Tigers were winning and no one on base.  Hinch pulled his super early several times in the playoffs.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he had the same stance of the Tigers that Skubal has.

I've heard up to 15 years back.

Olson? Drew Anderson? And....over $30 million coming off the books with Skubal leaving....that would buy at least one quality SP. And...we would still need a couple of bats.

I also did have the impression early in his career that AJ was definitely not Casey's favorite person. Memory is hazy but weren't there a couple of times AJ left him in to get hammered when he was spent? Whether that seeming rift has healed, I couldn't guess

Also could note that Casey's TJ rehab didn't go well either - does he hold the team responsible for any of that?

Nobody is going to step in and be Skubal, but Melton is already good enough to pitch in a first division rotation.  Jobe is completely unproven.

It's all moot now anyway because Harris did nothing to help the offense the last 3 seasons and he wasted a generational talent in Skubal.

Other than Dingler, the fact that a 21 year old player who was probably slated for a year of AAA is the best offensive player on the roster by leaps and bounds shows the malpractice Harris has committed with the roster construction on the offensive side of things.

But at least the team still has Jahmai Jones.

I'm not sure which is worse, the way he constructed the bullpen, the money wasted on injured/ineffective starting pitchers or his inability to bring in much needed offensive help. A combination of all 3, I guess? I could see him getting a pass for this season because of all the injuries and the fact his draft picks aren't on the roster yet. Bit it also wouldn't surprise me if he were to be fired. There are several organizations that aren't very patient, especially with a bloated payroll.

Either that, or it shows that Kevin McGonigle is a generational talent who, as a 21-year-old player, has delivered more offensive value than any other player has on this or 19 other major league teams.

EDIT: Sorry, it's 18 other major league teams. Tigers are the 19th.

Moot argument.   I've heard in the best of circles that drafting McGoinigle was nothing but sheer luck.

If we can get a good return for Skubal  and Mize at any point between now and the deadline we have to make that trade.  This team has far too many flaws and it just does not seem to be our year unfortunately. Our strength is starting pitching but, in my estimation, starting pitching is not as valuable as it once was with starters going only 5 innings and even popping champagne if they go six full. Time to retool with emphasis on POWER. We need sluggers and Power pitchers at the back of the bullpen. With the stupid overtime rule it is malpractice not to have a flamethrower for extra innings. You need strikeouts with runner on second and no outs. Huge disadvantage for us which is why we re like 1 and 100 in extras this season.

Defense-bullpen and big innings via power is how teams are winning. Moving players all over the field just does not make any sense to me. Who can master their craft at multiple positions. Just have a utility guy for fill in. Harris and Hinch are fine but just stop over thinking. We need ballers and then let them play.

Captain Obvious.

Probably just me being an old curmudgeon but applying "generational talent" to a pitcher that's been able to muster 190+ IP in a season twice, a career record of 57-41, never won 20 games, has had 2 great seasons and has been injury prone is a pretty loose use of the term.   Maybe save that for JV?
