It’s his turn in the rotation and I have been looking forward for a couple of weeks to going to see him, but of course, the starter for today is listed as TBD, so that probably means a bullpen game on getaway day, damn it. Edman85 Posted Wednesday at 11:59 AM Posted Wednesday at 11:59 AM For all the crapping on the local media here and how unneeded the beat guys are, nobody seems to be aware of the bullpen game (or what might just be a Melton spot start) today that was reported my multiple beat guys Sunday. Quote
papalawrence Posted Wednesday at 12:04 PM Posted Wednesday at 12:04 PM Pitching chaos isn't going to work this year. Brieske, Hurter, Holton, Foley were all pitching very well. Quote

Tigers have a bunch of bad pitchers who over performed for a while before regressing to the norm. Their last six games in September are on the road at Cleveland and Boston. It could be excruciatingly interesting. Quote
kdog Posted Wednesday at 01:17 PM Posted Wednesday at 01:17 PM Strikeouts and walks IMO...we K too much and don't walk. Our pitching doesn't miss bats. Quote

Hitters who aren't named Cabrera can always be better, but they did score 6 runs. This game came down to poor pitching but also to 2 shouldn't have been missed catches. Most teams can do serious damage well when you give them 4 or 5 outs in an inning. Edited Wednesday at 03:40 PM by gehringer_2 Quote
Archie Posted Wednesday at 05:51 PM Posted Wednesday at 05:51 PM Hinch might have been the only person watching the game that though Jack was able to get out of the inning. With Flaherty's track record this year I would have had someone warming up to start the fifth and yanked Jack after two hits. We all knew there were more coming and where the game was going. Sure Hinch needs to get innings but he needs wins more. Pull Flaherty early and hope for more innings from the starter in the next game. It probably all would have fallen apart anyway with the bad bullpen they have but it would have been a better move. Quote

They have a bullpen game today and half their existing pen is unplayable. Quote
Tigermojo Posted Wednesday at 05:59 PM Posted Wednesday at 05:59 PM Flaherty's FIP is actually lower than Mike's but his ERA is a run higher. Is it poor defense or bad luck or good luck for Mize? Quote

I don't know if the Tigers have some kind of deep dive metric on this they follow, but just as a long time observer, I've come to where I am always willing to accept that the reliever I bring in may be a crapshoot to fail but I'll accept that risk because I've come to believe a starter out of gas in a long inning is a more near certainty to fail. Is it poor defense or bad luck or good luck for Mize? FG says Flahery has a 1.7 WAR with a 96 FIP- but 0.7 RA9-WAR and 117 ERA- in 124 innings, while Mize has a 1.2 WAR and 101 FIP- with a 1.7 RA9-WAR and 86 ERA- in 105 innings. The main difference for Mize is he is getting LOB luck (80.3%, vs 71$% for Flaherty). So, if you look under the hood, Flaherty is pitching "better" than Mize. But, the results are what they are.
