Tiger337 Posted September 25 Posted September 25 It's hard to care right now, but Oakland is up 2-0 vs. Houston in the 5th. Quote

lordstanley Posted September 25 Posted September 25 While nowhere near as bad as the Tigers' collapse, and with the security of a playoff spot locked up, the Jays have fallen apart too. From a 5 game lead with 11 games to go, to tied with the Yankees with 4 games to go. The Jays have lost 6 of the past 7. Quote

Probably if it was an amicable breakup, like if the Tigers lost a pennant race that was close and hard fought the whole way. But this collapse is the equivalent of not only her breaking up with you, but doing so after cheating on you with some loser dude. Hard to erase and move past that. Lol..yeah. I just take solace in the fact that it's only a marketing artificial divisional race. I mean, I never thought this Tiger team was the best team in the AL and I didn't like people calling them that. They were the team with the best record for a long while but the defending AL champs would be considered the best team until they're defeated. The defending champions. And with so many divisions, and wild card teams, making the playoffs has gotten less glamorous. Winning the pennant is winning a league championship. Cleveland got real hot at the right time and we went ice cold at the wrong time. Historic comeback and historic collapse. Quote
lordstanley Posted September 25 Posted September 25 (edited) On September 5, the Mariners lost for the 6th time in 7 games. Since then they have gone 16-1, Raleigh hit his 60th tonight and they just clinched the AL West. First division title since 2001 and only 2nd playoff spot since then. The Tigers are mathematically eliminated from the bye, lol Edited September 25 by lordstanley Quote
romad1 Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Woke up an hour early and this team was on my mind. The failure of this entire team will indeed linger. Pre-post-mortums seem way too drastic but... does this team win another game this year? Quote

They'll never get this stench off of them 1964 Phillies - never did anything again 1969 Cubs - never did anything again 1978 Red Sox - totally different team by the mid 80s 1987 Blue Jays - Took them years to recover Nope, this team is finished - Might as well trade off the core pieces and get more prospects because this is a team of losers, and I don't want them around anymore. Nice stats, guys. Yeah, Stats ! Riley Greene, Nice player, sure, but he's a loser. Spencer Torkelson, loser, Kerry Carpenter, loser. Get rid of them all. Rebuild. Hope the next batch, the 2027/28 batch has more guts then this bunch does. And Hinch? Yeah, nice little run for about 9 months, but he's cooked too. Might have been more lucky than good. The Twins had a crap end of season collapse last year and they are broken now. I don't know what spark they need but whatever the gritty Tigs were they ain't that now. I could point to losing Olson and Jobe and never getting anything out of Alex Cobb. At one time in this season we were clearly better than the Yankees who just blew past us. And losing Olson hurt but it's the lack of scoring runs that hurt us the most. The whole lineup went into a late season slump. Quote

I joked about that early in the season. The team has no personality. The look like a white suburban middle class travel team. I don't think that is why they are losing, but it makes for less entertainment. Edited September 25 by Tiger337 2 Quote

More because Houston can't win a game than anything the Tigers will do. They have a 1 game lead over Houston and own the tie- breaker. Houston has lost 6 in a row and Brown just pitched. Houston will need to win 2 more games than Detroit in the final 4. Detroit will likely back in to the playoffs and play Cleveland in the first round. If Detroit can win just one more game, Houston would need to go 3-1. Edited September 25 by tiger2022 Quote

tiger2022 Posted September 25 Posted September 25 I could see them going 0-4 and still getting in because Houston can't win games either. Quote

kdog Posted September 25 Posted September 25 I don't think they should overreact to this collapse because it's very strange that everything has gone wrong at once. I think they got a little high on their supply with all of the pitching moves and roster chaos. Eventually, they had no answers for any of it. They need to stabilize a few more positional players and redouble their efforts to get more pitching depth. 2024 Pitching chaos basically killed about 5 guys with injuries. That's hard to recover from. Quote
