I think there is something more than we see between Hinch and Mize. I'd be at a loss to see why Flaherty could be considered more 'trusty' than Mize in this universe, but Hinch has always seemed to have had a lot of reservations about Casey. I guess maybe if you think you need the shutout, Flaherty is maybe the pick as when he is 'on' he can be more dominant than Casey, but he's also more likely to blow up. If it were regular season I don't think you could reasonably argue that on average you are likely to get a better game from Flaherty but like I said, if you are going for broke I maybe see the choice.

That was my thought.  You're more likely to get an OK game out of Mize than Flaherty, but you are more likely to get a dominant game out of Flaherty especially aginst a strong line-up.

I agree if going by the regular season their isn't a way to argue on average you would get a better game from Flaherty, but think it has to do with Flaherty having pitched in more big/postseason games (albeit with mixed results) and overall better stuff, especially swing and miss.  Maybe Hinch thinks he's more likely to get 4-5 shutout innings from Flaherty than Mize, which for 3 potential games against Toronto (or NY) would be big.  Obviously they need to get there and if they both win today and tomorrow, it's better yet, as it would be Skubal in line for the 3 starts.

If Flaherty is on, he will go 6-7 and help the pen.  Mize being on probably is shorter than that.  Doubt it’s a confidence thing moreso than a bullpen management tactic.  Personally I don’t think it matters.  Both guys need to give us QS to win vs Seattle.

Maybe Wenceel is playing RF, but Kerry is hitting as the RF. This plan works for me, because (despite what he did in the last game against Cleveland) Wenceel sucks.

What really scares me about Flaherty is even when he "appears" to be "on", he'll have an inning when he suddenly gives up a crooked number. And it usually happens so quickly there's no chance for Hinch to react.

The Free Press is incorrect pretty often. There was an article today that said the Tigers took a late lead in game two only to give it up and lose. Tork's double tied it up but we never had a lead in game 2.

Its sprinkling here but MLB doesn't have it in their plans for a rainout. Their schedule is set.
