Tork walks after seeing seven 102 mph pitches. A silver lining for me regardless of how this game ends is that Arizona out scored Purdue 48–26 in the second half to move into the Final Four. And we won this first series. Boo yah.

Not a very entertaining game, but I can still thank the Tigers for a much less frustrating evening than watching the Wings would have been.

I think the Tigers should have been more aggressive with challenges.  The early called 3rd strikes on McG and Tork were balls.  Would have disconcerted and worked Vasquez a bit more.   To what end? No one knows.

Just came across this.  Detroit on opening day should have some someone do a live version of "Kick out the Jams" or "Locomotion" or if only we knew someone who could do this...who was a Tiger fan..."7 Nation Army"

He’s done opening day before. I’m sure he will be there even as a fan if he’s not got an obligation of some sort.

Yeah I don’t understand the “save challenges for later” approach.  If it’s clearly a ball, challenge it

I think the problem last night is clear: those amateur men’s team’s jerseys and the two toned caps were bad juju. The baseball gods have spoken.

Tork said that they did not act in time to get a challenge. It's like 6-8 seconds and then the ump moves on. They don't let you check with the dugout. They just have to do it and deal with the consequences. Hinch has not put a limitation on anyone.

I hope they eventually change the challenge thing to an elctronic strike zone on every pitch.  If the challenges are accurate, why not just do it automatically? If they are not accurate don't use it at all.  Why make a game of timing the challenges?

Maybe if the number of successful challenges is high enough the rule will change to allow more than two. A third challenge would likely result in more early uses. Obviously not this season.

I’m happy with 2-1 to start this season.  There have been too many things, even minor, on the defensive side in my opinion.  I can deal with the results as long as a sound game has been played.  Sometimes the other team is just better.  That’s baseball.  But sloppy defense isn’t going to help things if they continue.

And the umpire can still "call it":

1) ABS flashes on-screen an "S" or a "B" and the umpire simply calls it out, per the ABS.

2) If a batter swings and misses, umpire calls it a strike even if the ABS screen flashes a "B".

3) Umpire gets to decide if a batter has checked his swing in time or not, which can also be appealed to the line umpires which can overturn the home plate umpire's call if necessary. If Ump decides batter HAS checked his swing, he calls it by the ABS, which STILL can either be an "S" or a "B" (a checked swing does NOT overrule ABS..). 

 

Anything else related to ABS balls and strikes specifically...?
