If Tarik Skubal gets traded, the Tigers’ realistic hope won’t be to win the trade—it’ll be to survive it. For teams trading one of the best pitchers in baseball on an expiring deal, the prospect return rarely comes close to matching what they gave up. That also means the acquiring club will likely have few regrets going forward. Looking at comparable trades this century, history shows that it’s almost impossible for a team to win a trade when shipping out an ace on an expiring contract. At best, they can avoid losing it too badly. I am trying to build some optimism, but this is still my fear. And the worst part for you is when everone calls Harris a ***** for not getting a better return. Edited July 30 by Tiger337 1 Quote
Tiger337 Posted July 30 Posted July 30 Blockbuster trade by Harris. They are still all in apparently. Tigers acquired RHP Zane Barnhart from the Orioles for C Jake Rogers. The 24-year-old right-hander was a 17th round pick by the Orioles from the 2023 draft class. Barnhart has made 31 appearances at Double-A Chesapeake this season, posting a 4.05 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 45/19 K/BB ratio across 40 innings. He’ll add bullpen depth in the upper minors for the Tigers. - David Shovein Quote

Any future value over what they would have received in draft pick compensation was more than the value of that ace for the rest of the season on a losing team. We probably have the greatest playoff odds of any of those historical teams, but even so, the future value of a ML starter with multiple years of control and ideally ready or almost ready OF is likely more valuable to us at this point than the value of Skubal finishing the season on our team. We got much more value from Boyd and Norris (including Olsen) than we would have from 2 months of Price in a losing season. Yes. I understand JJ has to produce content, but he’s stretching to find comparable deals here. First, Skubal is a tier above all of the guys mentioned. Second, the tigers are presently in a more competitive position than any of those teams. That increases the level of return necessary to justify a trade. Scott Harris knows the hit rate on prospects. He’s not going to settle for a combo package like Avila, mostly because he can legitimately say to every interested team trying to call his bluff that he will just keep Skubal and make the playoffs. And he might be right. Quote

This lines up nicely for the Tigers to capitalize on Skubal, Mize and/or Torres. Quote

Anything that is not a sale of Skubal with a return that does not include a major league-ready outfield bat, a backed-rotation-ready pitcher, and a Pipeline numbered prospect for the future, at minimum, is going to be seen as a failure. It won't be fair, but when you have that job, them's the breaks. Quote

SoCalTiger Posted July 31 Posted July 31 So today I was listening to "Rogen and Rodney (as in Rodney Peete ) a local LA sports talk show that loves the Dodgers and they were speculating Depala- Wroblesky and Vreeland" for Skubal. I sure wish they were the Dodgers GM. 1 Quote

I’m setting my expectations low, similar to how I approach almost every other aspect of my life. I’m rarely disappointed. Hmm, lets take another angle on this. All IMHO. If the Tigers were trying to get Skubal now, with their own prospects/players what would it take? You have to also consider the competition (LAD, Milw., etc.). Then say to ACTUALLY get him in a trade - what would it take? The one problem few consider is that SPs like RRay, KGausmen, FPeralta, etc. are also out there. They are not Skubal nor the 'seemingly' difference maker he could be - but teams might settle. With said I do not see the Dodgers really going that far for anyone on the SP market except Skubal. One big reason is that they will consider they may not wish to face him in a series (remember, the LADs have several LH bats in their lineup). The other SPs, more than likely, do not scare them as much. Point for the aforementioned is that Milw., etc., will have to put forth a pretty strong package to obtain him, rental or not. BTW, the LADS also wish to three-peat. That will motivate them and the fact that they have surplus prospects does not hurt. So, I ask again what would the Tigers, hypothetically speaking, have to come up with to ACTUALLY beat the offers from other teams? That is why Detroit should get a stronger package (IF they do decide to deal him) than maybe what some pundits feel (ex BA). I am not saying it will be earth shattering - but it should be 2 pretty good prospect/players (and an addition or two) or one top level type plus a couple other pieces (here scouting is important). 1 Quote

But I would still take Willie over Henneman. Willie 6yrs 358games 120Saves 483IP ERA+135 ERA3.52 Henneman 9yrs 491games 154saves 669IP ERA+136 ERA3.40 Hiller 15yrs 545games 125saves 1242IP ERA+134 ERA3.39 Kind of amazing how similar the ERA+/ERAs are between the 3 I'd guess the Hiller difference in number of appearances per year is directly relatable to complete games. It's definitely debatable. Hernandez had the better peak. Henneman pitched more years and innings. Peak versus career is always tricky when doing these lists. The other thing that's hard in ranking relievers is that roles have changed so much over the years. Today, most closers pitch one inning and also in save situations and some of those situations are not so impressive. Go back to the 70s and Hiller was a closer, set-up man, middle reliever and spot starter all wrapped in one. I don't think Jones could have done that. Hermandez probably could have, but it might have impacted his rate stats. Edited July 31 by Tiger337 Quote
