Were you at the meeting?  Just curious.  😀

No...I said if. Pure speculation but with BorASS as an agent? Speculation is pretty easy. I think Skubal even said where the extension talks should start, didnt he?

It still seems odd to me that there would just be one discussion concerning their best player.  I am surprised he even said that publicly.

I don't know that I take the comment to be literal but rather that the initial discussion with Boras pretty much set the tone for everything that came after.

It really depends what Skubal's response was. If he was bound and determined to test the market and the only way he would sign was outrageous money? I could see all talks being stopped. We just dont know, we'll see this off-season.

Harris talked to Skubal once about a contract?  I don't know much about contract negotiations, but shouldn't there have been a followup at some point?   I'm just curious.   I didn't want him signed to a ridiculous long term deal.

I take it to mean (what Harris said specifically) was that there were NO contract negotiations.

Harris: "We'd like to talk about an extension for Tarik".

Boras: "We will NOT be talking about an extension. Tarik is going to test free agency... Period."

END of contract negotations.

A couple things I noticed entering the Mize haul into my sheet.

Jackson Wolf has never been on the IL, in this his sixth year as a professional. Knock on wood, but there might be some value in that, even if it is just to munch innings the rest of this year and next in the upper levels.

Kash Mayfield is eligible for the Rule 5 a year earlier than the rest of the 2024 high school draftees, because he turned 19 in February of his draft year. Fangraphs has this wrong at the moment, by the way. Good thing Littlefield isn't around.

I believe Harris. Maybe “once” is doing a lot of work in that it refers to a specific formal meeting vs any kind of casual talk in case they run into each other. I doubt Harris or Ilitch ever mentioned it to Skubal directly. That’s a breach of protocol. All indications were that Skubal is going to be a FA. I don’t think the Dodgers will sign him early.  He will enter a competitive market.

Finally, I don't know where Harris got the 35 players on the 40 man roster placed on the IL. I counted 26 players with 5 who have been put on twice, for a total of 31. I did not count River Ryan.

Of course that works both ways.  Skubal could have initiated.    Many athletes that wanted to stay somewhere have done so.

I ran into a girl in a Tigers hat in a bar circa 2013 or so I thought was Kate Upton. It was a bar I had seen Bronson Arroyo at before, so it wasn't out of the realm of possibility a famous person would be there. I knew she wouldn't drop Verlander for me despite us having matching hats on, so why even try just to try? And I guess baseball fans would second guess me for not crossing some lines and making something unilaterally happen?

Players have agency. It takes two to tango. Sometimes you have you have no shot. Play the cards you are dealt.

This is my interpretation of what he was saying. Maybe there were periodic check-ins to see if he would reconsider, but those aren't really formal discussions about a contract either.

Never did believe they had a chance of resigning him

OK, I am not being critical of Harris.   I am just curious.  I have never negotiated a contract in my life.  I don't have much choice but to take what they give me.

this aspect doesn't bother me. If Skubal and Boras closed the door, they closed the door. Seriously, I'm sure Harris has dealt with Boras long enough to know when "No" means "No", vs when "No" means, "Call me back in a month".

Not to mention the other half, Harris is clearly proving himself to be pretty hard headed, and while he would never say it out loud, enough folks here have made the point for him that maybe you don't want to be that interested in a  long term deal with a 30 yr old who's already notched 3 arm surgeries

Because sometimes crazy **** happens?

Once upon a time I was with friends at a bar at the harbor in Lexington, MI.   Met a girl way out of my league, and we danced....

Mentioned that I didn't want to go home and maybe we should go instead to Niagara Falls.

She shocked me by saying "Let's go".   We ended up watching sunrise in Niagara.    Worked out well, 4 kids and nearly 40 years.....

Moral of the story?   Always take the slim chance....

So Mayfielf will have to be added to the 40 man roster to protect him? If so, when?

I once made a spur-of-the-moment decision in 1990 in an 8th floor hostel of Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong that has impacted my life every day since.

Is this a Harry Flashman story?

(taking the chance that reference isn't too deep cut)

I don't think you have to ask Boras twice.  You know what he's going to do.

I've stayed there myself. No further comment.

Tarik Skubal, Union leader and Boras Client , was never going to sign an extension with Detroit and any offer Harris made would have been the starting point during free agency. You would just be negotiating against yourself.

I do think Tarik  loved being a Tiger but he is also responsible to his family and the players association to get the maximum $$ only available in free agency. It's just unfortunate the stars didn't line up for him staying in Detroit. Nobody's fault. Just fate.

But now he is a Dodger and the opposition. And I don't care if he does well or not.

Obviously you realize that those situations are completely different but sure.

If you are 2.5 games out of the playoffs and trade your 2 best pitchers for prospects, you aren't serious about winning
