I know it's naive to never say never but I can't imagine that going over well with most people. I think same sex marriage has more broad appeal than abortion rights. But maybe not as intense. The dems need to go scorthed earth 1996 style to portray the GOP as what they are. Quit playing nice. There's nuance to the abortion debate even though I don't think there should be. But there's nothing nuanced about same sex marriage anymore.3 points

I saw it as more of a condemnation of those on the far left that didn’t hold their nose to vote for her, as opposed to conservatives that were never going to vote for her in the first place.3 points

No there won't, there will be an adjustment and people will work longer so that the ratio of worker to retirees stabilizes. It's already happening in the US and we don't even have nearly the demo dislocation of other places. There will be no crises and no massive tax increases. The idea that you can be retired for 30 yrs after working for 30 will certainly go away for sure, but that was an unsustainable transient anomaly created by the oddity of the baby boom the first place. The truth is that any species that can't survive at stable population numbers can't survive at all, so at some point Homo Sapiens might as well get with the program the Universe has set for it because the Universe has a talent for snuffing out any organism that doesn't learn to play by the rules.2 points

Basically my biggest fears coming into the season are happening except at a much more extreme rate than I even thought. I worried that if Hasse, Schoop and Grossman(in his case just power) came down to Earth in home runs from last year we weren't going to have enough power in the lineup to score at an even average clip. Of course with those fears I thought we'd atleast have a handful of guys that would be getting on base at a decent clip so even without home runs we could hit enough singles and doubles to be half way decent offensively but even that hasnt happened yet.1 point

That sounds good to me, as long as they can get around voter-suppression strategies such as accepting gun permits as valid Voter IDs while rejecting student IDs for same.1 point

Ok, thread My impression about events of late: The Ukrainians are trying to clear the area around Kharkiv to relieve the pressure on the large population center there and then drive into the side of the Russian attempt to break out of Izium. I'm hearing that casualties among the Ukrainians are pretty dispiriting even though they have way more espirt de corp than the Russians. Ukraine needs a win on the battlefield to break the Russians current efforts.1 point

Markets hate uncertainty more than anything. There was some concern of a 75 bp rate hike today. So when they announced the 50 bp jump people were happy. JPow also said they are not even considering 75 bp rate hikes as of now. So that helps with future guidance as well.1 point

Every time I think this “man” can’t be slimier, he exceeds my expectations. Let me just say that I haven’t been this despondent over current news, or more pessimistic about my country’s future in a long time… or perhaps, ever. Heartbreaking. I want to add infuriating, but honestly, extreme sadness is what I’m feeling at the moment. That emotion is pretty much taken over the forefront in my being.1 point

Does it matter? Americans oppose overturning Roe by 2-to-1 and that's not going to stop the Court. And leafing from there, logically speaking, the Court can't not overturn Obergefell, or all of the rest of them, because they all rely on the same 14th Amendment due process right-to-privacy argument Roe does. I don't see how that 14th Amendment can apply to some of them but not to some of the others. And good luck getting a permanent national right-to-abortion, right-to-marry-who-you-want, or any other similar-type law through Congress, since even if they could get enough legislators on board to pass it, it would surely be struck down by this or a similar court on 10th Amendment grounds.1 point

goff's contract will also be up in a couple years. it would be nice to have a ready replacement on a rookie deal rather than having to extend goff for $10-20 millon or give up assets in a trade or take someone else's failed project.1 point

It does seem that once Roe is overturned, there really is nothing to keep them from overturning Casey, Obergefell, Loving, Lawrence, Griswold, or any of the rest of them. None of these will be considered settled law anymore. I personally hope that once Loving is overturned and the Thomases travel to a state where interracial marriage is newly outlawed, they get arrested and imprisoned for being married. I would also accept his getting arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a white female. 😉1 point

The optimist in me is thinking it's just cause he was a rookie coming off an injury and will be able to stick at corner and be a solid one at that. I remember Slay getting burnt routinely his rookie year and he ended up making a big leap in the following years, I hope and expect Melifonwu to do the same, likely not to the extent Slay did but atleast to some extent.1 point

1. Maybe? How much of not being able to throw deep was not having targets who could get open deep? 2. Maybe? We've obviously been trying to build up the rest of the team, especially the defense. 3. Let's walk before we run... let's just worry about getting to the playoffs first before we target a SB victory. (More on this later) 4. This is a valid question, though it's worth pointing out at Goff improved under Campbell's play calling, so there's a legit reason to think that he will be more like second half Goff rather than first half. 5. I think most people aren't expecting improvement. Now, imho #3 is the biggie here. Can we expect Goff to be a guy who can lead us to the playoffs regularly, win some of those game, get us (eventually) to a SB and (assuming Hell freezes over) win a SB? Not next year, no. I would lay just about any amount of money on the Lions NOT winning the SB in the 2022 season. But (and this is key) right now we're only looking at using Goff for the 2022 season. Not taking a QB in the draft or trade for one or signing a free agent now does NOT mean the Lions are locked into Goff beyond 2022... heck, we're not even locked in for 2022. If he stinks up the place so bad it's scary we don't HAVE to play him. Unless I'm very much mistaken people are aren't saying we should commit to Goff and only Goff for the next 4-5 years. I believe people are saying: "We could be competitive this year maybe... and hey if Goff shows massive improvement maybe we stick with him long term. If he doesn't, we look at addressing QB next off season." One could argue that that's what the Lions were doing with Stafford. We know how that worked out. The front offices couldn't build a good enough team around him.1 point

the best is the "the ones who will really suffer are the babies". yes, i'm sure they'd much rather have their brains sucked out while theyre still in the womb. that's much more preferable.1 point

actually a good chunk if it is true. Who do you think it's going to be who is denied abortions? It's going to be poor girls, mostly of color, who are exactly going to have limited life prospects grow even more limited - will be cast onto a welfare system that those same white men who denied her an abortion are trying to throw her off of. What world are you seeing if you don't see this as the result?1 point

chet worries me. i'd stay away from chet. who will he guard? he'll get bullied by bigs and blown by by forwards. he didnt play well in the ncaas. otoh, if he can nail 3 pointers and can spread the floor, he'll have a shot. but if youre a team in the playoffs, wouldnt you just stick a stocky 6'4 player on him? i dont know if chet could outmuscle a guard in the nba.1 point

I was asking a serious question, twice, about what we should do with the 750,000 or so more additional babies that presumably would be born once abortion is outlawed throughout America. In a abortion-is-outlawed world, through the years, millions of girls and women, many of whom are young teen and preteen girls coerced into having sex in the first place by adult men, would be compelled to carry the child to term and raise it themselves, as the father takes himself out of the picture, the girl gives up schooling that might better her life to take whatever low paying no-health-care-giving job she can get, trying to raise the child in impoverished circumstances, all while being criticized for even being a single mother, and ultimately resenting her child and the damage that having it did to her life while taking out her frustrations on that kid throughout his childhood as he ends up drifting who knows where, all while putting billions of dollars in additional strain on the public assistance system. Add on top of that the hundreds of thousands of girls and women who would keep taking their chances on illegal abortions, frequently unsafe, and this would result in many multiples more deaths on abortion tables than the single digit number per year that occurs today. I know the hardcore anti-abortion people give less than a shit about the mothers, since they tend to dismiss such women and girls as sluts out slutting around, so hell yes they should get the punishment they deserve by being forced to raise a baby. But it's worth remembering that the women and girls are not the only ones who would suffer here. The baby—the part of this equation these anti-choicers purport to be all so, so concerned about—is also in a very bad spot as well. If this entire debate is all about the baby and not really about the mother—is that the case for anyone here?—then sure, that would make some case that abortion should always be illegal in all circumstances. And it looks like that sooner than later, they're gonna get their wish. But remember: in a handmaid's world, once the baby is born, it's not as simple as life wins and the job is complete. God help that baby afterwards, because in most cases, it is going to be a very bad ride for that kid.1 point

They don't care about the "babies". To them women who get abortions are sluts who dare to have sex outside of marriage. Rape victims had it coming by wearing a skirt and black bra. Fuck the religious right. They are evil. All of them. They only care about "babies" as a tool to gain political power. I know this is just a game to you but real people are going to get hurt.1 point

I frankly don't care about the sanctity of the court or the politics right now. I care about the women and their families that will be hurt by this. Young girls, victims of rape, and middle aged mothers with high school kids facing a health crisis with an unplanned and shocking pregnancy at age 45 will end up dying. All because of 5 justices who think our country should be a theocracy.1 point
